lots of folks joking about this today. Here’s what isn’t a joke: if you are a big Hollywood producer and you can get The Rock on board, I’ll license Getting Over It to you for free. You can get Uwe Boll to direct it, cast Mark Wahlberg as the pot, whatever you like

AAA games: thankyou for saving the world. Take this, our most sacred treasure, a magical amulet. The player: great, thanks! what does it do? AAA games: it increases the power of your attack by 3% when your health is under 20%, but only if you are in the air

Wanted to share this genius piece of good-bad design I encountered the other day: in the Zero magazine demo for Cadaver (1991) there are several pits with no way out, so you are soft-locked if you fall in. Design solution: each pit contains a bottle of deadly poison you can drink

The conventional wisdom is that you can figure out roughly how many copies a game has sold on Steam by taking the number of user reviews and multiplying it by 50 (on the pessimistic end) or 100 (on the optimistic end). A thread! (again, sorry - threads are the worst!)

I know it cost $40m to make but having now finished it, I think you can make a case that Death Stranding is an indie game. It has those hallmark features: the use of repetition and procedurality to save money; experimental mechanics; dogged commitment to incoherent weed ideas

One of these days a 500-person AAAA studio is going to go all-in on a game with PSX-grade graphics, spending all the additional dev time on ridiculously excessive scale and running-length instead of detail or fidelity, and it’ll be a huge hit

Takeaways: - There are a lot of hit games that do not get written up in the press at all. - Reviews are no longer a prerequisite for driving sales. - You can't stay up to date any more just by reading reviews. - Lots of invisible market niches to develop for!

For people who love videogames, we’re living in a golden era. This sliver of time when all these nice people are making so much weird stuff for us, before most of them give up and go get jobs in a year or two. It’s glorious, but ephemeral, and I don’t want to miss a second of it.

Seems like Apple is going to needlessly kill a bunch of iOS games in June by introducing new tech reqs. QWOP for iPhone can’t be updated and will be erased (like some of my other games beforehand). 10 years is an ok run for a phone game, I guess, but I wish there was an emulator!

PSA for folks making first-person games in Unity: if your fixed timestep is 50Hz (default) and your framerate is 60Hz, your Character Controller will judder horribly if the player moves and rotates the view at the same time. It causes motion sickness due to 'vection'.

A lot of folks seem to assume that Ape Out’s soundtrack is dynamically fading between pre-composed music ‘stems’, but it’s actually live-composing the music as you play and syncing it to the impacts and intensity of the gameplay.

The terms ‘novelist’ and ‘musician’ and even ‘filmmaker’ are a lot cooler and more apt than the term ‘game developer’. But ‘game designer’ is too narrow, Japan’s ‘planner’ or 1970s’ ‘implementor’ way too focused on software. All 4 carry weird baggage. I wish we had a better term.

when the Souls games are at their best, the level is hard, the checkpoints are far from the boss, and the boss is no harder than the level - just more punishing of overcautious play. That way, you're guaranteed to just-barely get to the boss, and you die because you're scared.
