@thetimes
I’ve corrected headline for you.
“All pupils are missing out on education because schools are underfunded. Government and Councils would rather we blamed children with disabilities for asking for their statutory rights’.
Just seen Mail announcement that kids will HAVE to attend summer school catch ups.
Damn. Mine are booked out all summer on fun.
If they need catchup they catch up in term time over years head.
Because-you know-if we could sort catch up in six weeks we’d have done that years ago.
Charities please stop talking about ‘hard to reach people’. Admit that you are a ‘hard to access organisation’.
Latest essay on access. And why I’m proud to be a girl from the estate.
Annual reminder that large number of 18 year olds won’t be collecting A Level results today. Many will be collecting vocational qualifications. Other won’t be collecting anything. And while press obsessing on University other routes to life success are available.
@WestminsterWAG
Cool.
Sign form refusing any treatment (NHS or private) for any condition from now on in.
As to the ethnical choice about how much you want to spread to others guess that’s with you.
& as to bankrupting country methinks COVID isn’t what’s robbing us of resources...
Dog owners.
Don’t care how ‘friendly’ he is. Or how ‘she’d never hurt anyone’. Or your instruction to ‘just give her a stroke’. Or how ‘he’s big softy-it’s just a lick’.
When your dog frightens my child by barking or jumping you’re an irresponsible owner who shouldn’t have them.
Has anyone done a representative poll of what parents actually want in terms of a) homelearning b) return to school c) the next year & d) what they think of what schools are doing?
Because I’m really bored of everyone but parents having a voice & a view.
My dad died.
He taught me to ask forgiveness not permission. To be fierce & forgiving in equal measure. Work hard. Play hard. Family first but fix world. That soldering irons hot & Dr Who best watched behind his back. That we are all in gutter but some of us are looking at ✨
2 weeks ago I found a horribly suspicious lump in breast. GP saw me in 24 hours. Breast clinic for mammogram & ultrasound today.
Thankfully all clear. A reminder though of both value of life and of the

So very wrong. It must be so totally exhausting. And at an event where the ‘establishment’ were meant to be celebrating your work. So sorry.
They were dead. Medicine has improved.
They were in institutions.
Inclusion has moved.
They were ‘weird kid’ you bullied.
We’ve moved on from ‘weird’ to know that difference normal.
They were undiagnosed dyslexic.
Now we can help them fly.
Would you like us to go back?
🧵 Clips below:
Cllr Hammersley: "Is it something in the water?"
"Why are there so many people jumping out with these needs? Where were they when I was at school?"
"Why do so many people have this badge of SEND and special needs?"
"To stop this spend fix the problem at source"
That moment when your anxiety ridden son performs his first gig and rocks. 😭😭😭😭
Music teachers every where I love you. And the Head who spoke of music as the equal of any subject - I wish I’d recorded you.

@jennieweiner
We are clearing out all noisy toys and games......
Just saying.
But paint, mud, wellies, copious books and magic supplies in hand. And charity shop haul of 30 kids DVDs.
And that’s just for the 21 & 18 year olds 😂
They’ll all still be learning.
Seriously schools & edutwitter. Just one story of how proud you are of young person who got good A-levels but isn’t off to uni. Or of someone who got an E but for whom it was massive achievement. Or heaven bid of someone who got vocational quals.
A* and uni not the only success.
So. I’ve got 10 stone to lose. This is a two year task.
5K outdoor 🏊♀️ swim booked in for summer 2020 😬.
Friends and family warned of imminent grumpiness/stories of pain/tantrums.
Plan in place.
There may be updates.
And yes I’ve started before Christmas.....😂😭😂
Dear zero tolerance, 100% attendance, “he’d be better down the road”, statistics manipulating, off rolling, EBACC promoting, curriculum narrowing, homogeneity chasing, Spiked supporting, disability denying, law breaking ‘educationalists’.
Your time calling shots is done.
Us.
Just had someone DM to say my tweets were too political. Was it the killer sheep on the forest or the mint, strawberries and cucumber I grew for the Pimms!?
Or / you know / the whole social justice and inclusion vibe.
For clarity. Any School Head or Charity CEO that says sexual abuse wouldn’t happen here because we are too strict/kind/informed etc. needs to consider their position.
It happens everywhere. And making statements like that makes it easier for abusers.
I don’t know
@educationgovuk
- I’m pretty sure most parents of teenage girls would think that a teacher who texted these things to their daughter probs shouldn’t the teaching. Ever. Again.
Just saying.
Son is sick. Blurgh.
School has asked us to complete NHS 111 checker and send in screen shot of result.
What new jumping through hoop/interfering with family life hell is this? It proves nothing.
I thought twice about posting our celebration of DD2 going to university. In the current context it seemed crass.
But then I remembered. We weren’t celebrating her results.
We are marking her surviving school system. & I mean surviving. 1/
A short thread. On superb schools.
My son has massive anxiety with other issues. He school refuses. In his last school his attendance was less than 50% & every day a challenge. He was becoming unwell after ‘masking’ all day. 1/
Be clear-‘othering of children with disabilities is deliberate. It’s step to providing them with lesser services & care.
Othering is 1 of 10 steps to genocide. Anyone who thinks that’s hyperbole doesn’t understand history or what evil lies behind ‘for the good of the majority’.
Here you go
@thetimes
I’ve corrected headline for you.
“All pupils are missing out on education because schools are underfunded. Government and Councils would rather we blamed children with disabilities for asking for their statutory rights’.
1) Put clear salary information into job adverts.
2) Don’t ask people’s current salary in reference requests.
Both significantly disadvantage women, disabled, carers & BAME candidates.
The job you are advertising it worth what it is worth. Make it clear & pay that.
Every school should be a superb school.
This mainstream LA primary school is a superb school.
J & his brother thrive there. & yes that includes literacy & numeracy & science & times tables & phonics & all else that can be measured.
It’s time all schools were superb.7/ end

Yes. They really do. They believe that this is a meritocracy and that they got jobs because they are cleverer and work harder than anyone else.
This article is stunning on so many levels.
On access to outdoors. On women. On grief & loss. On strength physical and mental.
@drrachelhewitt
is one of the leading writers on the case for the outdoors to be for all.
School gave sweets to kids with ‘good attendance’. Telling rest to ‘push on through’ as they letting form & school down.
Nice message for son with life threatening asthma to hear. He in tears now.
@ChildrensComm
@Ofstednews
@educationgovuk
Attendance is input not outcome.
Massively important thread.
When you are watching child screaming & crying on floor because of anxiety while waiting 2 years for diagnosis.
And then you receive ‘we will prosecute’ letter.
I speak out because many other parents cannot. When a Head does it it is powerful. 🙏
Some Truths about Education -
A Thread
My daughter is one of the 1.8 million pupils currently classed as persistently absent from school.
She's not lazy.
My daughter was one of the 1.4 million under-18s referred to mental health services in 2022.
The trauma is real.

Schools in England forced to cut support for special needs pupils
Mmm. Let’s correct that
@guardian
.
Schools underfunded & choose to prioritise non disabled children.
Sorry I know pressure schools are under but stop blaming disabled children.
@JulesDaulby
When we and girls all had noravirus - and boys were 2 and 3 - we strapped them into their pushchairs and lay next to them while they watched non stop CBeebies while we threw up & crawled to toilet. Either we are best parents in world or worst.
Or just parents.
Trying very hard not to roll eyes. All those parents who’d asked for home learning support for their school refusing children to be told there was no way government & schools could support learning at home.....
But guess they were only disabled kids.
One of my key influences died today. In her 60s. Suddenly. 40 years she’s been part of my life. Didn’t always agree. But God that woman was a storming force for good.
Cherish those who shape you. Thank them while you can.
Play it forward.
RIP Di.
People talk about catching up. About what needs to be DONE TO my kids so they catch up, get back on track etc.
But I don’t read about catch up with what? Age norms? Their peers? The curriculum? Standardised testing/statistical jiggery pokery? Credentials? Health?
These 3 SATs questions from
@FIGSUK
one of best campaign ideas I’ve seen for a while.
And yes when my son refuses to go to school ‘people’ have suggested we throw him in car and that we are crap parents. ‘People’ are a bit ignorant.
But.
Here’s the thing.
It shouldn’t be a battle.
It shouldn’t take resourced, connected, teacher mother & warrior daughter
It shouldn’t take war plan to navigate system.
It shouldn’t be exhausting to access education.
So yes we will celebrate. She deserves every sip. 9/
I was challenged to come up with cash neutral solutions to improve system for SEND learners. So here they are. You can read the 10 recommendations and skip blurb & I’ll await the fallout on recommendation no 10......
I’m pulling together a NY date for all campaigners, parents and allies concerned for what tonight’s results mean for children with disabilities. And for kids who don’t fit.
Because we all know what this means.
I’ve been pretty seriously poorly last few days.
Boys made posh tea to cheer me up.
We’ve explained diabetes to them now. 😂😂
They enjoyed it. And I could have a cup of tea!
And defo it’s the thought.
It’s funny. Inemergency people often turn to Twitter. & sometimes you wonder why.
But it’s to feel less alone.
They’ve just taken Matt to hospital worried he’s had a heart attack. I cannot go. Covid rules. & kids.
I know him walking is good sign.But.Pause. Was heart before.
When you are parent of a child with challenges who school refuses hearing him wake up laughing & getting his uniform on is sweetest sound.
This is not an accident. It’s because we moved to school valuing nurture & work with parents. From 50% attendance to everyday.

@RaeSnape
Possibly more important than ever as the ‘life experience’ gap has got even bigger over last year.
Spent last 30 years of working thinking I wasn’t good enough. & holding back on what I really could do. Too scared to shine & too frightened of criticism.
The realisation today that I’m not afraid anymore.
So. There’s that.
My husband says about time.
I say to all women 💪
@JolyonMaugham
I rarely (never) comment negatively on other charity comms or decisions. But I’m truly horrified by
@RefugeCharity
position on this.
Really need to hear Bruce say breaking a wife’s nose is domestic abuse. & that domestic abuse is v rarely a one off.
My kids sometimes wear charity shop clothes. I grew up in them-no choice. When I’ve talked about this before judgers judged. 🥱
But as we rethink our financial model what role circular economy on spending differently, wasting less & sharing more?
A resources thread. 1/
I didn’t show DS2 his SATs results. Because what 11yr old needs to
read “doesn’t reach standard”. 🤮
Mind you didn’t show his brother either & he’s just won top science student at secondary.
Or his first class sisters.
Cos. You know. SATs 😂. Instead got well rounded kids.
It is entirely possible to both respect massively work done by
@matthewhood
@OakNational
& teachers who’ve given time for free AND to question process of awarding contract, jobs and ownership of IP.
I am pretty sure Matt would concur.
It would appear when our pet black rabbits ‘played’ in the garden under the supervision of sons, who were under supervision of father, they made some rabbit friends.
Greeted this morning by black baby bunnies.

Check out my latest article: Why I am no longer talking about behaviour.

1 hour on phone to lovely person on CAMHS triage. 2 year wait for help.
I’m an expert. I have resource.
It’s still exhausting.
Nothing compared to what it means for my son.
So. You thought I was campaigner before.
Fuck. This.
For our kids.
Because here’s the thing. Rape of women is not about sex.
Like its partners stalking & abuse it’s about power. It’s about hatred of women.
Women-we will fight it together. We have power.
And if every man who is anti rape adds his male privilege to our power we will win.

Nearly 3 weeks since dad died. Will be some weeks to funeral.
But reason today to think on his eulogy.
He said angry people don’t make wise decisions. They wallow in their anger. They focus on the win.
Let injustice fuel you but don’t let anger shape your actions.

Thank you. Science rocks and this thread a lesson in science, logic, strong argument in a measured way: and the essential duckiness of ducks. 🦆
Update:
Matt will be home this morning. Not heart attack. More and more tests to do. Likely post viral (Covid) issues affecting heart/lungs.
I’m so grateful for all support and for an NHS that threw every test & treatment at him.
Never underestimate power of telling someone they’ve done well.
Just got msg from senior DfE civil servant that my work on SEND/inclusion helped stop rot from progressing (even more that it has). & regard I’m held in.
Given what that cost me it’s moved me to tears. Right outs.
This is not what the legislation was made for.
We take away CAMHS & other support from families, make 100% attendance a badge of honour and then prosecute parents who are desperate to get their kids to schools.
Sickening.
Such lovely recognition of work I’ve done for
@DefraGovUK
and outdoor sector over recent years.
Particularly proud of work on pushing access & diversity. Thanks to allies & partners.

Lot of discussion on whether ‘disadvantaged’ is right word to use. Often conflated with poverty/low income or as code for ‘working class’.
Language shapes power. Here some suggestions from an earlier piece on shifting the mindset from individual/community deficit to system.
Ah. This old chestnut in OFSTED’s ‘leak’ in today’s Times. Extra time is not easy to get. It’s not a fix. It’s not in place of teaching reading & writing.
It’s an equalities issue. It’s recognition that in real life, not falsehood that are exams, some kids take longer.
Look. It’s really not tricky. It’s hard enough being parent of disabled children.
It shouldn’t take complex laws or appeals to make family life easier.
With you
@PhoenixEdSarah
Just want to say that civil servants have done a remarkable job getting clear guidance out on multiple issues in short time period.
While having families and own issues to worry about.
Unsung - and too often derided - heroes.
Excellent from
@Baddiel
on the need for more children with disabilities to be visible in children’s books.
Something we’ve called for as part of

and for schools to consider in as part of inclusion.
Those who hold the pen tell the history. On schools let’s

School staff ran remote learning, in school learning, safeguarded, fed, supported mental health, followed government guidance, managed without government resources & stood in under ventilated classrooms.
“Sure Start, and other forms of early help, weren’t conceived as optional social or recreational opportunities – cute excuses to read some poorer kids bedtime stories, They were designed for big, grim, important reasons – to act a national safety net.”
So. Old people. Fat people. Black people. Disabled people. Muslim people.
Spreading disease. Using our NHS.
