"It's the same each time with progress. First they ignore you, then they say you're mad, then dangerous, then there's a pause and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you." (Tony Benn)
they took the bullock and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves ... And it came to pass, when midday was past, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
@BirkenheadBish
Thank you, Julie. I am ashamed and outraged that any bishop should take such an arrogant, foolish and dangerous point of view, so at variance with the basics of safe practice.
@mthr_jo
This is what I published in 2014, as with Tony Benn (in another context) I find that "first they say you're mad, then badm then there's a long silence, and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you"

commentator on Royal funeral: the Book of Ecclesiastes - (“Preacher”). But this afternoon’s reading was from Ecclesiasticus - (book of wisdom of Jesus Ben Sirach)...
Many thanks to four Conservative Evangelicals for this theologically grounded and thoughtful response to Jonathan Fletcher’s abuse. This, not cover up, is the way towards true repentance and healing...
@RevRachelMann
Yes. A terrible week with evidence of religious exceptionalism, stupidity, incompetence, lying, dumping responsibility at every level including the highest, and folie de grandeur. Bishops must be acccountable. This means not just to themselves. End of story.
Thanks to
@JustinWelby
for his heartfelt words to

this morning in response to survivors. Especially grateful for his honesty about the need for a holistic response including (as bishop who received Cooper Report) rethinking our cultures about LGBT+ people
So Farewell Then Mr Johnson: clown, wastrel, lazy blustering egoist who, as someone said of Lloyd George, debased everything with which he had to do. Prodigious talent for dressing up and getting in but no idea what to do when he got in or how. And earth exhales…
Jo Kind’s experience on C4 News... fourth corrupt & destructive NDA that’s come to my attention since September. They seem inherently abusive; mainly used to provide a carpet under which to sweep abuse. If people really want them they should be time limited with reasons?
Latest from the Provisional Wing of the RSPB. But they’re right. Junking environmental protections suits their chums and major donors but compromises everyone’s future…
Survivors of abuse in a church context receive about £55,000 in redress from the Church of England out of an estimated £20 million spent on safeguarding annually, independent research released this week suggests
I love the guy who looks like someone forlornly looking for the shower block on a campsite walking up and down behind her with a towel over his wrist (or big chunky maniple?)
I’ve worked with drunks, adulterers, narcissists and crooks in a prison. But you just can’t trust a Bloody Liar if you have to work with them because there’s no basis to know where to start when they retrofit the story to truth as it comes out
#cummings
A claim that a 2019 blogpost by Dominic Cummings was edited in 2020 to include a warning about coronaviruses is correct.
The change appears to have been made in April.
He claimed Monday that he’d warned about the virus last year.
The harm the
@ChurchofEngland
is knowingly inflicting on LGBT people must stop. It is, as I say in my piece "immoral, inexcusable, and cowardly".
"For it is the moral duty of a civilised society to safeguard the vulnerable – not appease the perpetrators"
Important to stop blathering on insincerely about learning lessons, actually start learning some lessons and change. Christians call this “repentance” Churches that refuse to do this get spat out by God. Please let’s not do this in the C of E...
Excellent analysis of the mainly good news that Archbishop Welby has met survivors and announced further investigations into John Smyth case from

1993. I was Rector. Traditionalist asked me to publish names. I could consult my colleagues and get back to him. Ah, quoth he, what if it's non gender-specific name? I could put a biological symbol on notices, quoth I. But that would be bloody silly, quoth he. Friends for life.
The diocese was informed today about unacceptable messages on social media, apparently from a licensed lay minister. We take all discriminatory behaviour very seriously & are looking into this matter along with another diocese. Thanks to everyone who brought this to our attention

@InquiryCSA
Scapegoating? That’s where you put the guilt for something on someone who didn’t do it. Inviting people to take responsibility for what they have done or failed to do is the exact opposite of scapegoating.
@RevRichardColes
Amidst a great cloud of condolence and moral support from thousands here and elsewhere the prayer wheels gently turn in the background... tons of love from Alan
Worrying and inherently abusive activity. We don't allow snake handling, FGM, child witchcraft exorcisms or other sincere by misguided forms of religious abuse. Why on earth is this nonsense allowed?
A great piece of undercover journalism on conversion therapy in the UK exposing the role of True Freedom Trust.
Well done
@HShukman
for exposing all this...

Much for all to learn here not only about

My great grandpa was a practising Scotsman. Some people didn’t like it but he carried on practising anyway and kept it up for over seventy years. Incredible.
@giles_fraser
So sorry Giles. Rationally why allow someone who cannot take responsibility for what they say credibility. But a cowardly bugger like this gets under our skins and worms their way into our heads and takes up residence in the wee small hours. How to evict them. Love and prayers…
@seaofcomplicity
I was there. Last day second hearing. I was so appalled I took it up with him afterwards. In justice he wasn’t representing his personal views but doing his job. The whole tribunal should be on the stage one day. Where is David Hare when you need him?
Please reassure me… the bloke telling us night club superspreader events between now and September are OK isn’t called Michael Kill? This whole thing is getting silly…?
Excited last night to hear rumours our Glorious Dear Leader has gone to the Moon. We wake up to find he hasn’t, he just *says* he’s going to the moon... Oh Dear... if an offer is too good to be true, it probably isn’t true...

Many thanks - I have been supporting LGBT+ friends into LLF on a promise it’s safe. Couldn’t believe it when this exploded in my inbox out of the blue. LLF had potential for good, and I believe we can get through this, but only with honesty and courage you’re showing here.

"strange indeed that God Almighty should make a being with such a nature… and at the same time make a decree that if that being whom he had formed, should at any time follow the dictates of that Nature… he should be punished" Matthew Tomlinson, Yorkshire Farmer, 14.1.1810
This damming report shows the horrific significant safeguarding risk the

attitude to homosexuality causes.
“Negative attitudes towards homosexuality and homosexual practice in the Church of England reinforce internalised homophobia …”

this week reminds me of John Cleese’s verdict on Basil Fawlty: “He’s intelligent but emotionally he just doesn’t function well because he’s operating on a map of the world that just doesn’t work.“
@canonjpemberton
Grossly insulting, ignorant and abusive. If same sex marriage is impossible, as he asserts, how can it possibly be wrong? And why is birth control OK for him? As the Bedouin say “the dogs bark but the caravan moves on...”
