I’ve been longing to host a guest post with a biblical case against the use of NDAs. I’m grateful to my friend Will Timmins who has supplied this blogpost under the title “Abuse NDAs and the Church: Making a Covenant with Death.”

We are a global movement committed to releasing individuals, Christian organisations, local churches and charities from the misuse of Non-Disclosure Agreements
Toxic & narcissistic pastors often create a "pocket" within an otherwise healthy church where agreement is rewarded with inner circle access & critics are silenced through self-doubt, fear of hurting the church and isolation

There is a crisis in evangelical Christianity around the world whereby those who seemed so gifted to feed the flock reveal themselves as mere hired hands. Their reluctance to name a wolf, and safeguard the flock by laying their life down to deal with it, is not a trivial matter.
“If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference. He is praying for me.”

I find Kyle uncomfortable and occasionally brutal to read. I keep on reading because I often discern the faithful 'wounds of a friend' that speak to my own Christian circles.

This is a spiritually manipulative way of failing to provide answers to credible (and evidenced) accusations and failing to recommend an independent review when it is clearly needed for everyone's sake.
Will any high profile Christian leader call

from their pernicious NDA or are we going to leave it to

It is a model of truth and grace that lights the path to restoration.
As this story gets picked up across the media, pray that this Christian constituency will see the need to appraise the culture as well as decry the culprit.

Five lies of identity:
1) I am what I have

How to build community:

2. Open your heart - be vulnerable, sharing sharing your principles and problems
3. Open your pocket - be generous, sharing your bucks and belongings
The gospel and prayer opens all of these
To my conservative evangelical brothers:
I can’t express to you how much it means when you acknowledge the abuse in our ranks.
I can’t express to you how much silence contributes to growing fear and distrust.
Please lead well on these matters.
So very much is at stake.
"It’s better to admit specific wrongs to specific people when offenses are committed than to constantly advertise to a general audience one’s general awfulness, esp if that self-loathing is simply self-promotion in disguise"

A radical cultural change is needed by both the Church of England and conservative evangelicals within it - it is a willingness for leaders to publicly and adequately repent of sinful failure.
Polite, charming churches can easily be/become abusive says

The Culture of Fear in UK evangelical circles has seen threatened litigation repeatedly used to suppress the burgeoning scandals. I'm grateful to Nick and James for being among the first to stare down the bullies. Will we stand with them?

If repentance means generalised apologies to unspecific people on behalf of unnamed individuals for unintentional actions following unofficial policy for which any sanction is unnecessary after an unpublished review, then how can
@UCCF
expect anyone’s trust in the future?
@daneortlund
Often true no doubt, and of course Twitter lends itself to an absence of nuance, but it might be better to say "can be like saying". Let's be aware of those whose battles are less simplistic.
We are all broken people, and Jesus is in the business of making people new creations. But he can only do so when there is confession of sin, acceptance of judgement, and reception of mercy and grace. NDAs are the antithesis of truth and reconciliation.
All of the most noted Conservative Evangelical Anglican churches, and also their bible training college, are run by public school educated, Oxbridge, Iwerne boys who have an incredibly strong connection to Smyth and Fletcher.
We call upon the other organisations the Scripture Union, Titus Trust, and Winchester College – to follow this lead and to reveal everything they know about the abuses and their coverup.
This is a precious thread for those sitting on sensitive information regarding abuse. 'Those who want to be a part of a culture in which minding your own business matters more than advocacy must have their beliefs and values challenged.'

@thirtyoneeight
Abuse almost always comes along with a system that contrives to prevent that abuse being properly dealt with, especially when the abuser is in what Mullen describes as a “keystone” role.
@wademullen
If you can't wait to move on from all these church abuse scandals, remember that, as well as feeding the sheep, it is *always* the job of the shepherd to protect from the wolf & behind up the broken. Our attitude to moving forwards reveals if our heart is for people or 'success'.
Southwark diocese have consistently refused to help those assisting victims & prioritized safeguarding their own reputation instead, even attacking whistleblowers. Note the resignations. Another independent inquiry is needed here.

Time and again we see churches and senior leaders involved in prolonged public scandals - after denials and reframing the narrative - when timely recognition and repentance would be warmly received. Your previous tweet is particularly relevant.
EN are to be commended for their increasing willingness to publish on the important issue of ministerial failure. Meanwhile, Church of England discipline through such minimised public rebukes looks a lot like prosecuting Al Capone for tax evasion. Let the reader understand.
There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river.
We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.

UCCF's hiring of an "independent" lawyer with a duty to protect and advance the interests of their client, a process that lacks transparency & a report that will lack even the scrutiny of the survivors reveals a cultural problem that extends beyond the suspended leadership.
While many have been talking about the suspension of Mike Pilavachi, the suspension of Richard Cunningham and Tim Rudge from UCCF (the Universities Christian Unions org) has gone under the radar. The official statements are a mixed bag, and I’ve written to the board for clarity.

Thank you for confessing your sins and not covering them instead. Thank you for reminding us that it is actual repentance which leads to actual restoration. Thank the Lord that he chooses to use us in all of our brokenness when we trust him with the consequences of true humility.
@UrbanMinistryUK
There's the enduring assumption in con. evangelical circles that "we're the good guys" because we think we're standing on the foundation of orthodoxy. Those who are most orthodox should also be the most humble, recognising both our doctrine & esp our practice is full of holes.

Many of us became persuaded that it must be an elaborate hoax for Chandler to share a virtual platform with Driscoll. When it became apparent to Chandler (which snr pastor wouldn't make sure?), he decided to double-down not pull out & spoke in terms of different views not wolves.
Evangelical leaders are often all too willing to publiclly call out a departure from orthodoxy, but I rarely find those who are prepared, even privately, to challenge abusive leaders and stand alongside victims. What might this tell us about what and whom is being tended?
2. Realize that peers have to hold each other accountable. Far too often leaders want all the benefits of co-laboring, but none of the responsibility.
That has to end. Leaders need to be committed to the public rebuke of abusive leaders or false doctrine.

God regards sin—not loss of reputation, or loss of institution—as the worst thing in the world. He wants those institutions that bear His name to be holy in the secret places. Only then are they truly His.

"If you’re in an English Anglican Conservative Evangelical church there’s a sporting chance that, whatever your age, gender or background, you’re really a rather lost, constipated public schoolboy, but without the perks."
Paradoxically, an abuser’s greatest ally can be leadership that’s bent on mitigating damage to their organisation’s reputation, even at the expense of those who are being abused; those whose misplaced loyalty knows no bounds.
- David Shepherd
Don't miss this sermon if you want to understand abuse in the Church. Conservative evangelical Anglicans in the UK take special note if you are still talking about a few bad apples.
The
@cofe
statement on their investigation of Pilavachi reads like a lazy primary school report - "could do better". No transparency equals no trust. No accountability equals no safety.
The Church of England has released a statement about their investigation Mike Pilavachi's "verbal interactions with a vulnerable person". It was decided that "Mr Pilavachi’s conduct had fallen short of that expected of a priest in the Church of England"
Don't be deceived, our public repentance glorifies God.
"People often point to the sins of Christians as an excuse to abandon Christianity. God points to the sins of his people, in the Old Testament and New, to highlight how amazing his grace."
"By this time Mr Smyth had been out of the UK for nearly thirty years."
Smyth was a regular visitor to the UK.

He had national prominence as lawyer in South Africa and appeared on television.
"It is possible to excuse the nastiness, narcissism, bullying, and sheer bastardry of a leader as taking decisive action and dogged determination. But it’s not! ... By tolerating such stuff you become an enabler of it."
A huge thank you to all who prayed for my little one. It was so touching to receive encouragement from people we had never even met. Yesterday, after 103 days in hospital, we made it home.
I'd love to see this light the fuse for people to proactively maximise what they own and specifically apologise for, rather than minimising connections to JF, refusing to help piece together the response to the scandal and neglecting to lead us forward from a generalised report.
@Richard_Scorer
Where are the snr conservative evangelical Anglican leaders raising & answering q's regarding Smyth & Fletcher? There's not one. When this q is raised the answer comes back that your q must be politically motivated & the questioner is made to be the problem as having an "agenda".
"If change is to occur, I believe it will only happen when people stop seeing the problem as "just a few bad apples" and start seeing how the barrel itself enables the rot." This Little Light, xii intro

The Times today exposes Church of England hypocrisy over NDAs. Justin Welby declared them ‘unacceptable’ and indicative of cover up - but the Church continues to use them on his watch
The serious charges made in this article deserve close attention by all conservative evangelicals in the UK, where a raft of scandals are currently being suppressed.
Church Society continues to act in ways that bring dishonour on the name of Christ. It is distressing to see a conservative evangelical organisation acting so unchristianly.
"Washing our dirty laundry in public" is a phrase commonly used - by those with vested interests - not to let the light in when complicit secrecy has been used to enable and extend the shadow of darkness.
It's significant TGC turned to
@BernardNHoward
to write about the situation in Israel and Gaza. Moral clarity is needed when Israel, Hamas, TGC or anyone crosses over red lines.
The Christmas spirit doesn't shine out in the Christian snob. Alas, they are many—whose ambition in life seems limited to building a nice middle-class Christian home, & making nice middle-class Christian friends, & bringing up their children in nice middle-class Christian ways /3
Equally, there is no safe space in conservative evangelical corners, where - despite their hubris - they've repeatedly failed to govern themselves, deal with their scandals and bind up the broken.
The truth is this - and all the bishops know it - that the
@churchofengland
is ungovernable. And because it is ungovernable it can never safe: because guess what, abusers love an ungovernable space.
Though we strive for excellence, authentic Christian leadership will be marked by the repentance enjoined by faith. Genuine & regular recognition of our inadequacy, failings & unimpressiveness is - paradoxically - a sign of maturity. The alternative is perennial scandals.
'Because the NDA is life long, I felt like I'd never be able to speak honestly without fear of legal redress, which is unfair and has not aided my healing from the trauma of the sexual and institutional abuse.'
For those wondering, this is how abuse can prosper in good churches with just one or two manipulative ministers. A further problem is that the methods are so easily and unwittingly absorbed by others.
The spiritually abusive organization becomes like a machine that views their people as objects to be separated into Cubicles of Charm or Crucibles of Condemnation based upon their willingness or refusal to unconditionally comply with the demands of the organization. [1/10]
