Victims of Savile I represented and have spoken with today are all disgusted by Boris Johnson’s comments. They’ve told me they want him to withdraw them and apologise. I urge Johnson to do that right away. Weaponising their suffering to get out of a political hole is disgraceful

Extraordinary evidence at #IICSA today - Lord Steel admits that Cyril Smith confessed to him in 1979 that abuse allegations against him were true – but Steel still did nothing about it, & made no effort to investigate whether Smith posed any continuing risk to children.

All true. But the criminal justice process has all but collapsed. It can now take 5 years or more for a rape case to come to trial; if it ever gets that far, which the vast majority don’t. Is it any wonder that complainants turn to the media for accountability?

1. Allegations of sexual assault must *always* be taken seriously. 2. Complainants deserve be treated with compassion and understanding. 3. Those guilty of sexual assault deserve the severest punishment. 4. Those accused have the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Fury as Gary Glitter pictured browsing smartphone and asking about Dark Web. This footage is very disturbing. As I say in the article Glitter has never shown any remorse and will always be a danger to children

IICSA today:Catholic canon law expert confirms that priest who breaks seal of confession to report a child abuser to the police will be excommunicated immediately, whereas a priest who commits child sexual abuse will often take years to be laicised (ie defrocked) by the church

Very clear there are serious concerns amongst ministers about parole board decision in #Worboys - and big questions about the evidence considered by the board. The decision to release this dangerous, manipulative man is wrong and it needs to be stopped

C of E traditionalists argue that confession should be exempt from mandatory reporting of abuse. The usual regressive arguments are trotted out here but the evidence from actual cases & research are ignored. Government must reject religious exceptionalism

Two-fifths of police forces in England and Wales lack rape units. A few years ago it looked like real progress was being made in prosecuting sexual offences. This progress now completely eroded and many perpetrators have impunity

Sunday Times asking this morning why former Archbishop of York John Sentamu not been awarded a life peerage. In fact, v good reasons why he shouldn’t be, given serious failings on safeguarding, as highlighted here.

@BBCR4Sunday @paulbayes @JohnSentamu ignored disclosure of church sexual abuse, left an abuser 5 years to continue abusing, bullied the victim & been aggressive. What valuable contribution did all that make to my, or any victims, life? If Sentamu is given a peerage it is an insult to victim/survivors

Letter in ⁦ @ChurchTimes ⁩ about Canon John Roberts , Liverpool CofE priest and child abuser, and how he was protected by Justin Welby (now Archbishop of Canterbury) in 2011. Cases begs many questions about Welby’s judgement & quality of decision making by Bishops generally
