laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah was born in 1948 and grew up on the island of Zanzibar but arrived in England as a refugee at the end of the 1960’s. Until his recent retirement he was Professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Kent, Canterbury.
Rest in peace Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
It was our privilege to award the Archbishop an honorary degree in Civil Law in the 1970s - our deepest condolences to his loved ones on this sad day.
We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty the Queen. The thoughts of the entire University are with the Royal Family as we are united in grief with the nation, the Commonwealth and the millions around the world.
