BSR: Presidential Decree โ A Bout of Economic Madness and a Cocktail of Illegalities - Big Saturday Read
After a brief hiatus, the BSR returns with a critical examination of the presidential decree that has caused chaos in the financial sector and economy
Iโm told this is a German paper and the headline loosely translates to โthe virus from Africa is with usโ. And just in case their readers were in doubt, they included a picture of a Black African mother and child.
I just had a conversation with Hopewell Chinโono, the first since the evening of 19 July, the day before his arrest. It was good to catch up. Heโs in good spirits. He sends his regards and huge gratitude for standing by him during his period of incarceration.
A sea of people converged for Morgan Tsvangirai in Harare. Even in death, the man continues to inspire. Heroes are not declared in boardrooms. They are made by their works and by the people. This is an awesome tribute to Morgan. Well done, Zimbabwe
#RIPMorganTsvangirai
One good lesson from Disconnect-gate is that when youโre a good bricklayer and youโre asked to talk about baking, politely decline & suggest a good baker for the task. The fact that we all eat bread and cake doesnโt make us baking experts. Itโs ok to say no
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
In other news, itโs Mai Musaigwaโs birthday today. Sheโs the one who gives authority for the
#BSR
:-) The journey began in that hectic first week at UZ, which is why that college on a hilltop in Harare means much more than an LLBs degree certificate!
Itโs a dark day. Morgan Tsvangirai lost his brave battle with cancer this evening.
The heart breaks with pain.
It was a rare privilege and an honour to have the confidence of this icon of the democratic struggle. My thoughts are with his family
#RIPMorganTsvangirai
Do not forget Zimbabweโs political prisoners Hopewell Chinโono, Jacob Ngarivhume, Godfrey Kurauone and the latest, Job Sikhala. They are in prison because they spoke out for you and I
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
#TheMarchIsNotEnded
Theyโre at Hopewellโs home. They never did this to Obediah Moyo whose corruption was exposed by Hopewell. They made the case against Nguwaya deliberately weak. The regime targets corruption-busters, not the corrupt elements. Zimbabwe is going nowhere with this lot
#FreeHopewell
That there was no money for transport did not deter her, so Iโm told. She walked from Mbare to Highlands to deliver gifts to fellow citizens in distress. They could use some of her pots, she said. A beautiful story that epitomises the spirit of community & giving
#CycloneIdaiZW
They took away his freedom
They eavesdropped into conversations with his lawyer
They denied him bail
They refused him home-cooked food & books
Yesterday they took away his lawyer
They have him in handcuffs & leg-irons
He is a journalist
He was just doing his job
#FreeHopewell
High Court Judge, Justice Chitapi has rejected journalist Hopewell Chinโonoโs bail appeal. The regime is vindictive & unrepentant. Itโs turning the screws on a man who was unrelenting in his campaign against corruption. Justice system? Itโs a joke.
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
Dear Young African at school. Please donโt be lured by a degree certificate. Acquire a skill. A trade skill. Do something that will stand you in good stead on the global market. You may have to do a conversion course, itโs ok. But get a skill. Get your hands dirty.
At some point today, please take a moment to honour:
Gavin Dean Charles
Silvia Maphosa
Ishmael Kumire
Jealous Chikandira
Brian Zhuwawo
Challenge Tauro
The Motlanthe Commission found that they were killed by the Zimbabwean state on 01/08/18. No-one has been held accountable.
You spend 2 years firefighting till you give up everything while she & her allies are gloating & enjoying ill-gotten gains. Then, a few weeks after starting afresh you are already disagreeing over whether to let her into your new home. If itโs not madness, please tell me what is!
Hopewell Chinโono
@daddyhope
is most grateful for your support and he sends his regards to you all. Heโs in good spirits, current circumstances notwithstanding. They are still searching his home
#FreeHopewell
#FreeJacob
The history of Zimbabwe would not be the same without the extraordinary leadership of these 3 African stalwarts. The man in the middle went first in 1986, Samora Machel. The man on the right followed in 1999, Nyerere. The man on the left has now joined his comrades, KK
#RIPKK
We spoke everyday. Back in 2018 we differed. But he came back & said Musaigwa, I was wrong. I accepted. People said, but Magaisa these guys opposed you. I said itโs ok. We made peace. I feel so helpless. Heโs at Chikurubi. I know I could be there with him
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
Zimbabwe in brief:
โข abduction & torture of opponents
โข killing of protestors
โข compromised justice system
โข rampant corruption
โข bankrupt economy
โข decrepit public health system
โข severe food shortages
โข a violent, uncaring & callous regime
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
1. I never said a word upon
@advocatemahere
appointment as spokesperson of the
@mdczimbabwe
because I do not, as a general rule, congratulate people on appointment but for performance. Few weeks into the role, itโs fair to say sheโs doing well to amplify the voice of the people.
Spare a moment for the political detainees, Hopewell Chinโono & Jacob Ngarivhume. They are in jail because they spoke on behalf of fellow citizens. They arenโt the first and wonโt be the last as long as authoritarian rule reigns in Zimbabwe
#FreeHopewell
#FreeJacob
Thereโs no wisdom in thinking those who spent their prime years in positions of power where they could make a difference but instead invested their talents to turn the screws on citizens can somehow become champions of freedom when they are powerless & politically homeless.
In 1980, Nigeria donated a tidy sum so that Zimbabweans could buy Zimpapers. A few months ago they stood with us for

When this team arrives at the family gathering, you know the business end of the event has started, no more monkey business! Thatโs when you hear the young ones say โChachaya!โ
This is Panashe Sivindani. She was arrested by the Zimbabwean regime for this peaceful protest. Young Zimbabweans are standing up to a brutal regime. I saw her straight A O Level certificate. Sheโs an intelligent young woman but more importantly she has courage. I salute her.
When I published the beneficiaries of the Farm Mechanisation Scandal, I knew I had given up my right to see the beautiful mountain of home, Gandamasungo. Sometimes you have to give up the beautiful things to do the right thing. These are the sacrifices
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
Even those who say they are fighting corruption mama, they are awarding their spouses huge government contracts and grabbing more land, mama. They are here too, claiming to be democrats. Tell us how we should treat them in July mama, Give us a signal
#JuliusMalemaChallenge
I donโt know why Khama Billiat has not broken into European football. Physique? No. This boy has a wonderful football brain. Far better than many who ply their trade in the Premiership or Championship. Heโs a special player. I hope one day he gets an opportunity.
Let us take a moment to remember and salute this icon of the struggle. Here he was, leaving the systemโs den. He fought right to the end. That system is still in charge
#MorganTsvangirai
I have now unfollowed our Finance Minister as he has shown himself to be averse to the art of conversation. The man posts ad nauseum but never responds. When someone does that they are probably not listening. Someone please let me know when his conversational skills improve.
Imagine a man who comes driving a hired Bentley & asks for money because things arenโt balancing & family is starving. One wouldnโt be wrong to tell the man to invest in a bit of common sense. Itโs unreasonable to expect help when you canโt be frugal in your limited circumstances
He was in my opinion the lyrical genius of his generation. I never paid attention to this genre until I heard this song which I picked from a medley. The boy was gifted. He made his mark. My best if his discography: Handichabatika
Rest in peace young man
#ripsouljahlove
I know we all have many thoughts and theories on the news from Bulawayo. I only ask that we be responsible in our tweets and think of fellow citizens who have either lost their lives or are battling injuries. Itโs not the right moment to show how clever we are.
#ElectionsZW
I heard from a friend so I came to pay my respects. She tweeted 2 days ago & promised a thread on her experiences in Zimbabweโs broken health system. Sadly, she didnโt make it. When we say
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
as she did in her last tweet, itโs not just a hashtag. RIP sister.
1. The amount of money due to the MDC Alliance from the state (ZWL7,5 million) is less than US$100K. If half of Nelson Chamisaโs followers donate US$ each, the party will have US$300K in an instant. The people will fund their struggle. There is no need to rely on the regime.
With the 10 million dollar support to fight the cholera crisis,
@econetzimbabwe
has shown leadership and compassion. We must thank them. This is how it should be, corporate citizens demonstrating leadership. Thank you and may God bless the hand that has given.
Imagine the faces of ZANU PF elites and especially the supporting crew after going through the todayโs BSR; faces wondering, โIs THAT what he got?โ Some will be saying โHow come I got so LITTLE?โ And then thereโs the majority saying โHow come I got NOTHING?โ
#PayBackTheMoney
Good evening, Hon.
@TembaMliswa
as a fan of the sweet science, I subscribe to the Queensbury rule that you donโt beat a man who is down. But this package was left for you by a fellow citizen. Surely itโs plain that the BSR only confirmed an existing confession?
#PayBackTheMoney
There he is, shoes in his hands, leaving jail. Morgan suffered. There will never be another like him. And after all this he remained humble & resolute. Fambai mushe, Save. My hero.
#RIPMorganTsvangirai
Iโm reliably advised that the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) is sending a team of eminent jurists to observe the hearing of the presidential petition. This will add to the oversight architecture which is necessary to promote the interests of justice
#ElectionPetitionZW
1. Yesterday I said the regime would throw up a trick to divert attention from the looting under the Farm Mechanisation Scheme. The arrest of Hopewell Chinโono & Jacob Ngarivhume is supposed to do that. Regime wants to take back control of the narrative. But
#PayBackOurMoney
1.
@PatrickZhuwao
you say I want to silence you and your friend, Prof Jonathan Moyo. I have no such power. You silenced yourselves by the egregious abuse of power during your time in govt. You lost the moral authority to speak on issues that you now claim to be champions of.
ZANU PF types have the temerity to question why Chamisa and the MDC Alliance hired foreign lawyers to boost their legal team. When their leaders sneeze, they fly to South Africa for medical services. And they hire a plane from a Swiss company.
Robert Mugabe knew his subordinate well. In this 2018 interview with ITV he described Mnangagwa as vindictive. โHe does not forget. If you step on his toe, he will come after you,โ he said. Goes some way to explain the vindictiveness towards Hopewell Chinโono & Jacob Ngarivhume
This is the high cost of tyranny that ordinary Zimbabweans are paying at the hands of the State. The manโs hands are tied at the back; heโs defenceless & not a threat. But they still beat him up. Itโs cowardly & sadistic. And this regime wants the world to take it seriously?
Iโve just had a conversation with Nelson Chamisa, leader of Zimbabweโs opposition. Heโs calm albeit under serious pressure. I donโt say this lightly but it was a heinous attempt on his life. The regime has gone rogue. It canโt manage him politically so itโs gone dirty.
BSR EXCLUSIVE: Beneficiaries of the RBZ Farm Mechanisation Scheme - 2
Imagine a situation after a gang of thieves share the loot, some discover that a few of them kept most of theirs & didnโt share with the rest. This is where we are. Victims are here too!
So much has happened in the last year. But never forget this man. An extraordinary man. He made us believe. Goodness me, he did. For some of us, he was more than that. RIP Bla Morgan ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฟ๐๐ฟ
Thank you, Gringo, for making us laugh. You brought lots of light to our lives and you were true to your art. And your legacy will live long after this sad day. Well done, Lazarus
#RIPGringo
People ask, is this lawful, what the magistrate has done? Iโm not surprised by what the magistrate did. Iโm surprised & disappointed that there are people who still ask these inane questions. Because somehow they think itโs got something to do with the law. Please wake up.
Some may feel miserable about themselves, feeling inadequate & pressured in the face of the glamour they see on social media. Gold glitters, but not all that glitters is gold. Behind the glitter lie vulnerable hearts & tormented souls. Focus on you & mind your own business.
Earlier I tweeted that riot police parked their truck near Hopewell Chinโonoโs lawyers offices. Iโm advised suspicious cars, including a cream Toyota Harrier, have been spotted in the vicinity as if on a surveillance mission. Terror tactics towards the lawyers. Itโs deplorable
Congratulations to the MDC Alliance for a successful launch of the governance blueprint
#MDCAllianceManifesto
I hear there was an acknowledgment. Iโm humbled by that gesture. My efforts were only modest. My great wish is for the people of Zimbabwe to enjoy prosperity
#ElectionsZW
BUT
Iโm still an adviser to the President
โข who is ZANU PF
โข who jails journalists & opponents
โข who denies citizensโ right to protest peacefully
โข who undermines the judiciary
โข whose regime is corrupt
โข whose regime abducts & tortures citizens
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
I am not Zanu-PF
I am not MDC
I am Zimbabwean
I support right of citizens to protest peacefully
I support the right of citizens to support political party of their choice
I am for independent judiciary
I am against corruption, abductions, torture
#Zimbabweanlivesmatter
The men who carried retired general Shiriโs casket to his grave had more protection than the men and women who would have been assigned to treat him at the public hospitals. Zimbabwe is a living paradox.
Thereโs always that crew. Things go swimmingly, they celebrate and even claim a share of the credit. Things donโt go so well, they unleash a litany of criticisms in the โwe told you soโ corner. Always.
Iโve been trying to do a tribute to Tuku. But every time I get to the 3rd paragraph, I tell myself Iโm not doing justice to the man, his music & his contribution. Tuku is a thesis & I hope one day someone will devote years to this manโs work. He was a lyrical genius. Special man
Some treated 31 July like a leper. They said it was pointless. They even said we told you so, believing it had flopped. It exposed their poor political judgment. When SA sent envoys they crept out of the woodworks, clamouring for a seat on the moving train
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
Secretary
@nickmangwana
youโre the information chief. If you/your associates believe the BSR presented an incomplete list, it is because you have the complete list that youโre using to pass judgment. I invite you to publish the full list & fill the gaps. Why is it hard to do so?
Why I worry for Hopewell and Jacob
It would be cowardly of us not to stand by men who lost their freedom & voices while defending ours. They face serious risks in prison. Letโs not beat about the bush.
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter

#FreeJacob
Amai would probably have said youโre a big boy Tawanda this weekend. Nah, she would probably have just written a nice letter and told me the nice things that mothers say to their boys! My most prized archive is her letters to me
#NewProfilePic
He wrote a couple of weeks ago, wishing me a happy birthday. โI could have called mukoma but Iโm not wellโ he said. Tests confirmed it. Colon cancer. I told him to be strong. 2 days ago I tweeted a fundraiser for him. Today, I woke up to read Patson has died. RIP warrior of light
Both are young Zimbabweans. One is in jail. The state says he incited public violence. The other is free. No arrest although thereโs clear evidence of him threatening public violence & using hate speech. The difference is that one is MDC Alliance and the other is ZANU PF.
1. The first time I went to a supermarket in the U.K. I asked a staff member where the parcel counter was located. The chap responded with a befuddled look and directed me to the Post Office. โWe donโt do parcels here mate,โ โtry the Post Office,โ he said busily but politely.
The testimonies & confessions Iโm reading from political elites concerning the abuse of public funds in the wake of the
#BSR
on the Farm Mechanisation Scam suggest to me that Zimbabwe could do with a public finance-centred Truth and Accountability Commission!
#PayBackTheMoney
I have just received confirmation that Hopewell Chinโono who has been detained since 20 July has finally been granted bail by the High Court at the fourth time of asking. Finer details to follow
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
Members of the riot police came to the offices of Hopewell Chinโonoโs lawyers Mtetwa & Nyambirai. They parked nearby and started singing. When a staff member went to check they asked him what he was doing & he told them he was at work. They said they were also at work.
For the record, Dr Khupe got 45000 votes in the last election and 2 seats in Parliament. The Soweto Derby has more fans than she managed in the election.
Please watch this till the end (and no, no one gets cut, donโt fret) Just watch to the end of the short clip. We complicate things for ourselves when itโs supposed be so simple.
The UN Secretary General has heard the pleas: โHe urges the Government of Zimbabwe to ensure the protection of all fundamental human rights, notably the freedom of opinion and expression and the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association ...โ
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
Leading human rights lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa says 8 Zimbabwean state security agents broke into investigative journalist
@daddyhope
โs home and abducted him. The agents did not produce a warrant & the lawyers do not know where they took him.
#FreeHopewell
My thoughts are with jailed journalist Hopewell Chinโono who was denied bail for the 2nd time yesterday. Heโs been in jail for > 2 weeks. Heโs doing time for offending the regime by exposing systemic corruption. Those he exposed are free men
#FreeHopewell
#ZimbabweanLivesMatter
I have read that Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) spokesperson Col. Overson Mugwisi succumbed to COVID19. He probably had a seat in in the Joint Operations Command (JOC) and one imagines JOC must have been very busy & meeting regularly in the run up to July 31.
I have to say kudos to
@ZTNnews
for a fair contest overall. When they called in the morning to say the line was difficult I thought, here we go again! But they came through & Andy Hodges played fair. I hope viewers got some value & can draw their own conclusions

Fuel price increases without wage increases can only mean one thing: wages and savings have been totally eroded. Prices will rise. Everything. The first sign is workers will not be able to go to work. You solve one problem but open up another. Itโs a calamity. Solve the politics!
