TV churches - every possible candle is lit at all times whenever you go in Real churches - no candles are lit except for worship (except for a sanctuary lamp) Country churches - you spend hours hunting in the vestry for the means to make fire. The matches you find are damp.

I took a big decision today after a lot of thought. I'm retiring from celebrancy at the end of the year. I get my state pension in January, and I have other things I want to do. It feels really good. I've loved it, but it time to move on more definitely into retirement.

When I was young, at some point in the week before Remembrance Sunday we would buy a poppy from an RBL seller. We wore it on the Sunday. That was it. No lampposts covered with them, no inferring that those who didn't wear them were less patriotic, no weeks and weeks of it.
