Upgraded face-masks now available in seasonal colours for clergy. Ideal for most liturgical settings. Please don’t be fooled by cheap imitations. These are the original. Genuine authentic features. Made from recycled brass and other materials. BOGOF. Ideal for large processions.
I was so deeply moved by the receptions this morning, and both
@emmapercy3
and I were touched by all the kindness and care shown by both of the congregations and colleagues.
The Dean presided and preached at the 11am Sung Eucharist today and was greeted with a spontaneous round of applause. Welcome back Martyn: we're so glad to have you ministering among us again.
Today’s best joke. A Priest, a Pastor and a Rabbit walk into a community centre to donate blood. The nurse asks the Rabbit, “what’s your blood type?”. The Rabbit replies, “I think I’m a Typo”.
RIP Pippa - peacefully at home in the Deanery, surrounded by love and family. Immortalised in this picture which Cuddesdon students used to refer to as a portrait of the Principal with a person behind her. Pippa interviewed many ordinands in her time. She was a faithful dog. RIP.
Huge thanks to Sarah, Neil and Brian at Unite. The Union Unite have been a great support. Special thanks to
@keitharrowsmith
at Counterculture, Catherine Richmond @ Worden Richmond and
@seanjonesqc
for their sterling work throughout. We have been in such good hands. Thank you!
The need for the “Tutufication” of the Church of England. Our master wordsmith
@CanonOakley
gets to the heart of the matter. “Tutufication” is 2022’s New Word of the Year, and its only January 1st? “Tutufication”; yep, let us hope for a collective episcopal New Year’s Resolution.
One of the best Pause for Thought's you'll ever hear from one of our rarest national treasures. Moving, honest and transparent. A gift of person and prose...
Deeply moved by today’s opening hymn at Blackbird Leys Church of the Holy Family. I’m so looking forward to returning to normal duties back in our Cathedral on Wednesday. But I am marked by this truly fine modern hymn sung to the tune of Abbott’s Leigh.
@ChChCathedralOx
Homilies are under 10 mins. Sermons over 15 mins. The 5 mins buffer zone is policed by undercover ecclesiastical detective squads. Over-long homilies or under-length sermons can be subject to on the spot fines. Repeat offenders face short preaching bans, or opt for retraining…
A quiet, grey and subdued Tom Quad remembers the victims of the shootings in Christchurch NZ. The college flag flies at half mast for them, and the families, friends and colleagues who have lost loved ones. Our links with the city are abiding and deep - never more so than now.
Annunciation - Lady Day in Lent.
Old English meaning of 'Lady' was 'kneader of bread' (hlafdige); 'Lord' (of the manor/shire) (hlafweard) meant 'keeper of bread'. 'Dough' is still slang for money, and we still speak of 'bread-winner'. In Aramaic, Bethlemen meant 'town of bread'.
Fortified by much tea and cake the Friends of the Cathedral gather in Oriel College to bid a fond farewell. For all that has been, Thanks. For all that shall be, Yes!
Alan was the independent mind/voice in CofE episcopate. His loss is huge and will be widely felt. He was a person of great integrity, extraordinary intellect, enormous compassion, outspoken, brave, wickedly funny, courageous, kind; a huge support to so many. We loved him so much.
Absolutely gutting to hear of the death of the Bishop of Buckingham, Alan Wilson this evening. A good and kind man who had that gift so very rare on the Bench: courage. Do pray for him and those who mourn him.
Exceptionally rare Wild English Pyramidal Orchid just flowered in Deanery Garden. The seeds - size of a peck of dust - are quite contrary and impossible to cultivate, and resist human domestication. They grow where they grow, wholly unplanned. Try to plant and they don’t grow.
New

today. Dog Tags are useful at the best of times, and Lyra is apparently very happy with her new security level clearance.

What is happening here? Two of God’s creatures, alert, poised in position, eyeing the pigeons and squirrels on the Deanery lawn from my study. Both adopt a good sitting posture. Both are obedient and well trained though can be troublesome off the lead.

Good for ++Justin! Our vocation is worked out in the wider world. Politics included. Get stuck in. Jesus did. The church is only meant to be the constructors’ hut on God’s building site, which is the world. We’re here to help build a kingdom to come, not stick with a cosy club.
I’m often told that Archbishops should “stick to religious and spiritual matters” and “stay out of politics”.
I have a feeling today might be another one of those days, so I’m just going to leave this here:
Very good to be at Buckingham Palace for tea yesterday, and to bring my mother in this her 80th year. A pretty drizzly day was considerably brightened by the Queen, Harry, Sophie, Beatrice, Eugene, Alexandra and others - and the bands, yeoman and all the other guests. Wonderful.
Spring Day at the Deanery. Giving thanks for the staff and students here, and the many friends and colleagues that we will miss.
@LyraPercy
@emmapercy3
Here at New College to enjoy Faure’s ‘Requiem’.
@emmapercy3
is one of the sopranos in the choir. Other friends singing too. Probably best known and loved Requiem, though Mozart fans will want their say on this too. Nominations for Top Five Requiems welcome!
Flowers in the forests of Jamaica. A long-planned extended family trip to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries sees us all out here. Brexit and winter left behind for a week or so...
In my opinion John Lewis could sell lots of these scented body warmers. This model is called Isaac - gorgeous. Thanks to Katie and George for the lend…

on a moving day. Beautiful service, truly amazing sermon and prayers. So much to be thankful for. A filled chapel full of mutual gratitude and encouragement.
Last time I did woodwork was 45 years ago. But, simple skills are somehow remembered, and this beech bowl emerged after an hour or so of turning. This started as a solid offcut.
Holy Week, 'Mary comforts Judas’ mother' - Nicholas Mynheer.
Norma Farber's poem (‘Compassion’) asks where is Jesus' mother on Good Friday?
In Mary’s house the mourners gather.
Sorrow pierces them like a nail.
Where’s Mary herself meanwhile?
Gone to comfort Judas’s mother.
…a reminder of two things. First, courage and compassion continue to flourish. Second, strangers care - our values and virtues transcend the usual frontiers of identity. The lesson of the Good Samaritan…
Giving thanks for Bishop Colin earlier - 20 years as Bishop of Dorchester, and without doubt one of the kindest pastors clergy and laity have ever had in these parts. Wonderful service at Dorchester Abbey to say a fond farewell to a truly great CofE Bishop. Blessings on him.
Frankie’s baptism yesterday, with family and friends gathering after. Emma took the service - joyous occasion, with everyone playing their part.
@LyraofChCh
was, as ever, helpful in hoovering up the crumbs after. Unfailingly reliable on that count.
Great joy to be at the wedding of Esther and Victoria Old St Paul’s in Edinburgh. The forward-thinking Scottish Episcopalian Church now have an inclusive liturgy for all marriages. This one today was an exquisite and fine Nuptial Mass - blessings on the happy couple.
Seriously joyous Mothering Sunday Service at St. Andrew’s Cathedral earlier today. This is the closing procession gathering up the mothers to lead the congregation out. Dancing is obligatory and there is no scope for opting out!!
Surprised to receive unsolicited comments from family members suggesting I might be in need of a haircut. Apparently, it is beyond the brush and comb stage, and needs remedial intervention.
Two 'Thoughts for the Day' on this Ascension Day.
1. Jesus returns to work from home.
2. Jesus adopts social-distancing measures. But this is only temporary. He will be back. Advent is noted...
Tutification of the Church of England: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse, and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” Desmond Tutu
Duck, squid, pork, chilli, sticky sauces of unspecified origin and mysterious depth; greens from distant lands, yet freshly picked; crunchy garlic, smack of ginger, more chilli. Nothing not to like.
Tutufication of the CofE: "It is through weakness and vulnerability that most of us learn empathy and compassion and discover our soul...". Desmond Tutu.
This image and text was sent to me yesterday. I am struck by the symbolism of menace and hope amidst the brooding clouds of darkness as principalities and powers and gather. I think of Romans 8: 18-39. We continue to pray, hope…help. Please donate to the charities giving aid.
John Chrysostom: "No matter where you are you can set up your sanctuary. Just have pure intentions; neither place nor time will be an obstacle. Concentrate your mind; be wholly composed in prayer. God is not troubled by any place. God only desires a clear and fervent mind…".
Very pleased to have Jessie acting as a Server earlier when taking Communion to a dear friend in a London hospital awaiting another operation. We use the Eastern Catholic Melkite Rite which is almost 2,000 years old. It has such beauty. Three of us sharing in healing prayers…
More snaps from yesterday’s 60th party. Didn’t quite manage 60 guests but close. Or on target if you throw the four dogs into the final numbers. Thanks to all who came and made it such a special day.
Spoke yesterday to packed (150+) dining hall at Oriel College. So grateful to Elizabeth Harrison, Hon. Sec. of Friends of the Cathedral. She’s ‘retiring’ soon after many years of devoted service and awesome organisation. Saint John Henry Newman looks down on us, radiant, glowing.
With so many challenges facing our planet and in wider society, it is important to keep faith in local politics and the capacity of our local leaders to still make a difference where possible. Do what you can.

- always love the Gibbons carvings - beautiful warm veneer. Great choir. Fabulous Chaplain too -
@emmapercy3
- though I declare a conflict of interest.
Tutufication in the CofE: “My father always used to say, "Don't raise your voice. Improve your argument." Good sense does not always lie with the loudest shouters, nor can we say that a large, unruly crowd is always the best arbiter of what is right.” Desmond Tutu
This door will mean little to most. It’s the small King Charles I gate
@ChCh_Oxford
secluded in

garden. Dean holds key this side; President Corpus the other. Gate made for Charles & Henrietta so could court (post-nuptial). King lived in Deanery; Queen at Merton.
Good to welcome a great many friends and colleagues from Oxford for our farewell lunch at home earlier today. Joe and Immy cooked Tacos, and lovely and glad to see so many here.
Indeed. "Inherited church" rhetoric has been with us for ages, with folk clearly directed towards the "emerging church". Current CofE hierarchy besotted with the new and shiny. Christian Union has taken over the Chapel. Result? For every 1 person CUs recruit 100 are turned off.
Thanks to one and all that came for my 60th birthday today: a date also shared with Harry Potter, JK Rowling & St Ignatius of Loyola. Nicely rounded off by the greatest Lionesses coming through to win. So gutsy, brave and brilliant. Fab Lebanese food and summery English puddings!
Great to welcome awesome

Evangelicals. We were reckoning on around 40 attendees. But there are almost 100. Powerful preaching, praise and testimonies. Affirming and profoundly moving.
The best second hand shop in England. The former Alnwick station hosts a coffee-dispensing-dog-welcoming-model-railway-running book ‘emporium’ to die for. Just Amazing... Happy to be lost here:
This is what True Devotion looks like. Then again, it might be more to do with the smell of lamb on the BBQ and thus falls into the category of a desperate intercessory canine prayer, bordering on pure manipulation. For

hope springs eternal. Happy Easter!
God enters our humanity, sharing our deepest wounds and pains. Awhile ago, a competition to write a short radio play led to one winner, called ‘The Kiss’:
‘Good to have you home, son. Sorry you were in so much pain.'
‘It wasn’t the nails that hurt, dad. It was the kiss.'
Good to gather with LGBTQ Christians in Oxford for today’s festive Pride March. Great service at the University Church before the walk through the city begins. A really wonderful and affirming atmosphere - good to be there with friends and colleagues.

-.gathering friends to celebrate 30th wedding anniversary with
@emmapercy3
- great to have so many celebrate with us!
When I pray in my chamber, I build a sanctuary there.
When I cast out a prayer upon the street, a spire rises to the skies. When without voice, my soul prays in any place, my whole being becomes a church. When my faith kindles and flames into praise, the world becomes a Minster.
Today I complete my fourth year of widowerhood. It’s not a journey, it’s a slog, but I now have 1,460 days of learning to live in a world without David.
Keep going, right?
Life will continue to offer you surprises, and not all of them will necessitate a GP appointment.

Interesting; concurs with other trends: Radio 3 Evensong, the rise of non-Eucharistic worship, etc. Eucharists increasingly perceived as membership-based. But Mattins and Evensong are for all - irrespective of faith/belief. It asks less of attendees yet give us more. Like God!
We have seen a resurgence of Mattins, what was once the normative service in Anglicanism. This gem is being rediscovered by many churches great and small, notably
@StBartholomews
and
@AllSaintsRome
. We propose once again this prophetic article.
A trip to Spellmans, York. A secondhand bookshop to linger in for lengthy periods of time. Some of my best friends have been here - indeed, may still be.

for our 11am Eucharist. Good to see many regulars, and also some new folk too. There was something very moving and deeply powerful about our gathering today. One Bread, One Body.
What an extraordinary document. It’s no surprise, but its brazen approach is still shocking. What does “new congregations and fresh expressions all rooted in the Anglican tradition” mean? Nothing, anything, everything. Anglicanism reduced to a soil for experimental pot plants.
And what does this mean on the ground? You guessed it: redundancies. Fewer priests celebrating fewer sacraments to fewer people. And yet, what’s this? “If we had enough money would we still do this? Yes”
Well there we are.
