Btw, to all the Republican elected officials in NY making gleeful hay over the Cuomo allegations but who stayed silent in the face of Trump’s documented sexual violence against women...
We see you. Sit down. Your bullshit sirens are blaring.
This is a betrayal of the public trust.
There needs to be full accountability for what happened, and the legislature needs to reconsider its broad grant of emergency powers to the governor.
I join this call because we need state party leadership that is committed to investing in every community, fighting for every vote, and showing up to lead.
Yesterday, this very special person, the woman who is my rock, the girl who makes my heart smile, the best friend I could ever hope to have, said she’d marry me.
She said YES! 🎉💍🎉
As the vote count comes to a close, it’s clear that our community has given me the incredible honor of being re-elected to serve as State Senator.
To every member of Team Gounardes, every voter, and every person who believes in the vision we share: Thank you.
World, meet Evan (“Vangeli”) Simeon Gounardes, born yesterday at a healthy 7lbs, 11oz. Mommy Melanie and Baby are doing great, and Daddy’s pacing the hospital room thinking about colleges.
We are absolutely in love with this perfectly precious bundle of joy!
A week after a reckless driver killed two people in his district, and two weeks after another reckless driver killed a mother in a hit and run, Ari doesn’t seem to understand that lower speed limits saves lives.
Another terrible idea from progressives - speed limit of 20 mph (!) "to prevent reckless driving". Instead of enforcing current laws, regulating e-bikes, increasing number of NYPD traffic agents, they want to create even more road congestion.
Take this from a subway rider!
I have questions.
But first, let’s be clear about a few things:
This is attempt to interfere w/ the AG’s existing investigation.
It’s unethical for subject of investigation to offer legal counsel to 3rd parties for their testimony.
An investigation into yourself is not real.
BREAKING:
@NYGovCuomo
's office is conducting its own investigation into the harassment complaints against him — and offering staff members lawyers to accompany them to questioning by
@NewYorkStateAG
's team.
@Brendan_LyonsTU
reports:
We’re making history today in New York City! For the first time ever, our speed cameras will be on 24/7 starting tonight at 10pm.
Pro tip: if you don’t want to get ticketed, don’t speed.
There’s no way to see this rally as anything but full support of the atrocities committed yesterday by Hamas
There are legitimate spaces and ways to show solidarity w/ Palestine and its people. This is not it.
Thinking how Cuomo wanted me to drop out of my race for state senate in 2018 (before he endorsed me). His emissary told me he only wanted Dems that "would give him the state senate he needed."
And now look. Cuomo resigned & I'm here ready to work w/ his successor, Gov. Hochul.
I like Di Fara’s too, but I dunno, maybe they can pay their taxes? 🤷🏻♂️
The notion that we’re gonna pull out all the stops to help a business that owes > $160K in taxes when there are more pressing issues and many people who need real help is kinda absurd.
Di Fara is THE best pizza place in New York City. It MUST be saved. I’m ready to do anything I can to get them reopened — as are thousands of New York City pizza-lovers.
My team and I are looking into how we can help resolve this situation.
Radical idea: if you’re speeding recklessly time and time again (and time and time and time and time again), you should have to drive with a speed regulator to force you to drive the speed limit.
Under my new proposal, we can force the most dangerous drivers to drive safely.
Thanks to all who joined us today to propose our bill to install speed-limiters in cars of repeatedly reckless drivers who rack up 6+ speed/red light camera violations in 12mo. We already use this technology for drunk drivers; it’s time to hold speeding scofflaws accountable too.
No one seriously thinks the NYS Dem party & party chair is supposed to manage every candidate's campaign.
We do think that the state party & its leadership should at least pretend to care about building the party, turning out voters, and supporting down-ballot races.
Never thought I’d see a day when someone vying for the highest office in our state would question whether the polio vaccine is necessary.
@leezeldin
is unfit to serve.
#nydebate
I represent one of - if not the most - red-hued purple districts in NYC. The state GOP & Conservative party chairs are actively present in my neighborhood supporting their candidates.
NYS Dems DID give me some money in 2018, but that’s last I heard from or saw of them.
Speaking from direct experience, the only organized political party that did an ounce of work in southern Brooklyn this election cycle was the
@NYWFP
.
Hearing a lot of this, on Twitter and from sources. It seems WFP did a fair amount for Hochul; my tweet was about electeds and I should have make that clearer.
Our collective outrage should have no end.
A grandmother killed by a car while walking her granddaughter.
The driver had multiple speeding and driving violations and faced no consequences.
Make it make sense.
All due respect,
@NYPDShea
, this is factually wrong & offensive.
169 people were killed on our streets this year by cars. Worst year in nearly a decade.
Tell the grieving families that lost their loved ones to a reckless car that “it’s not cars.”
Acknowledging "this will probably annoy some people,"
@NYPDShea
says when he steps off the curb he's more worried about non-car vehicles coming from both directions. "IT's not cars."
4 years ago today, I took a girl way out of my league out for a drink which turned into dinner which turned into another drink which ended up being a date that lasted 8 hours.
Today, our son just turned 10 months old!
It’s simply fascinating how life works.
I love you Melanie!
Imagine fleeing for your life from your home, traveling thousands of miles, often on foot, to make it to the Land of Liberty, only to be met with this.
Disgusting.
Look who arrived just in time for Mother’s Day!?
We are thrilled to welcome precious James Andrew into the world, born 5/10/23.
Little Iakovos arrived earlier than expected, but that’s just because he couldn’t wait to meet his Mommy, Daddy, and most of all, his Big Brother.
If you are traveling more than 11 miles over the speed limit, thereby increasing the chance you seriously injure or kill somebody if you hit them with your car, then we “GOTCHA” on camera and you deserve a speeding ticket.
Buffalo is on the verge of having the first unionized Starbucks stores in the country!
I stopped in to check in on the campaign w/
@SBWorkersUnited
and then showed my solidarity by visiting the Cheektowaga store before heading back to the airport for the flight home.
BREAKING NEWS!
@NYGovCuomo
just signed my speed camera legislation. This a victory in our fight for safe streets. I want to thank
@NYC_SafeStreets
for turning their pain into purpose and making this happen!
Quick update about our vote count:
Based on unofficial tallies, our Election Day deficit of -5210 votes is now a lead of >1100 votes.
Every vote must be counted. There are ~3500 ballots left to count. We believe our lead will continue to grow.
We’ll know more soon...
I am sickened by the death of a mother who died today as she struggled to carry her child down the stairs at the 7th Ave B/D/E subway station. Only about 118 stations, roughly 24% of the NYC subways are accessible via an elevator. It’s simply unacceptable.
This is a mistake. Without congestion pricing, the MTA Capital Plan we fought so hard for will be largely unfunded, which means more travel delays, fewer accessible stations, and ultimately, fewer riders returning to the subways. I strenuously urge the Governor to reconsider.
Governor Hochul says congestion pricing, which the MTA estimates could levy an additional $1 billion each year, is "not going to happen in the next year under any circumstances.”
NYS spent $107 million w/o ANY public input to put fancy lights on bridges while our subway system was falling apart during the 2017 Summer of Hell. All in the name of...wait for it...tourism.
Tourists don't come to NYC to see the Kosciuszko Bridge.
FACT
#1
: Governor Cuomo admitted to - and apologized for - making inappropriate, sexually-suggestive comments to a subordinate employee.
FACT
#2
: This constitutes sexual harassment under the law in the State of New York.
Man oh man, the 15 trolls who make up the conservative cretin cabal of southern Brooklyn must have their heads exploding at the fact that
@JustinBrannan
won by a 20-point margin over their manufactured dystopian alternative reality candidate
“We’re doing this because the alternative is death.”
If you think this is a drill, you’re wrong.
If you think this can’t affect you, you’re wrong.
If you think this won’t get worse, you’re wrong.
Be smart. Be safe. Stay at home.
Our campaign has just been endorsed by the Daily News!
“We endorse Gounardes, a shrewd, energetic Democrat, over a legislator who has worn out his welcome in Albany.”
Really saddened to hear that Michael Halkias, owner of The Grand Prospect Hall, passed away.
He was a man with big vision and an even bigger heart. And of course, he made dreams come true for thousands of people who celebrated at his hall.
May his memory be eternal.
@agounardes
Will you be responsible now for the mechanic bills for the engine seizes up? also if I have an emergency and I need to get to the hospital and I have a limiter on you’re going to be liable
Tonight
@JustinBrannan
& I held a town hall about pedestrian & street safety.
A man shouted that he wished food delivery workers were killed while riding their bikes.
The depravity of some people just astounds me. We truly don’t see the humanity in people we don’t like.
Thank you
@MTA
for getting me from Bay Ridge to Hudson Yards in LESS than 45 minutes this AM!
No two ways about, public transit is the best way to get around this city, which is why we need to fully fund mass transit the same way we do other essential public services.
Can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with this stunningly radiant (and goofy!) woman who makes my heart smile each and every day.
Here’s to making each other laugh forever and ever! 🤵👰
Personnel records should never be leaked as a weapon of retaliation against employees.
I am introducing legislation to ban this behavior and protect employees from this form of abuse.
Pro tip: Don’t use more than one Twitter account on the same phone - you’re liable to send a really dumb tweet from the wrong account. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️

@SenMartyGolden
Up early thanking voters for their support and placing their trust in me. Excited to be the Democratic nominee for the 26th Senate District. On to November!
I can’t help but feel that the “make NYC fun again” argument really speaks to people who spent the last year relatively untouched by Covid and bored at home.
It doesn’t really reflect the lived experiences and trauma of people who went through hell and back this last year.
It seems absurd that Andrew Yang, with no government experience, could become New York's mayor. But people are responding to his campaign to make the city fun again, writes
@michelleinbklyn
.
Today
@NYCMayor
announced that 24/7 speed camera operations which began in August, are already having a dramatic effect, reducing speeding in camera zones by 25%. In August, cameras recorded 755,000 speeding violations, a number that continues to drop, with 565,000 in November.
Despite multiple cycles of competitive state & federal races, I’ve never once seen Jacobs campaign or support Democratic candidates in southern Brooklyn.
State Republican and Conservative Party leadership are down here all the time supporting their candidates and local parties.
We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to right the wrongs of Robert Moses and heal our communities devastated by the BQE. New York cannot and should not let this opportunity go by.
A pedestrian was killed tonight by a speeding driver. This time on 4th Ave & 101st St in Bay Ridge. Walking his dog in a crosswalk. I’m shook.
When are we going to WAKE UP, SLOW DOWN, and realize that we are literally killing each other to save a few minutes behind the wheel?
Thank you
@BayRidgeDems
for leading this charge.
Every single elected official who fanned the flames of riot and insurrection and then continued to perpetuate the lie that this election was fraudulent, even after people were murdered, is unfit for public office.
Just saw a car hit a cyclist on McDonald Ave and Ave P in Brooklyn. Literally in front of my car.
Cyclist knocked off his bike, face all scraped up. He seems OK and refused medical help.
The driver? Drove off and didn’t even stop. Are you effin’ kidding me!?!? 🤬
From 2014-2021, NYC has netted ~ $32.5M in revenue every year from speed cameras and has spent roughly $266M every year on Vision Zero safety improvements, more than 8x the camera revenue.
A moneymaker this is not.
“If you don’t want to get a ticket, here’s the easiest loophole: don’t effin’ speed, because it’s gonna kill people, it’s gonna maim people, it’s gonna injure people….Your right to speed does not supersede anyone’s rights to live on the streets safely.”
This is in my district. The video is disturbing but it clearly shows two things:
— the driver was speeding
— the driver blew through a red light
NY Penal Law Sec 125.15
2nd degree manslaughter = recklessly causing the death of another person
Criminal charges should be filed.
Thanks to
@KathyHochul
, New York has passed nation-leading laws to expand abortion access, protect providers, and safeguard the fundamental right to reproductive choice. We cannot let Lee Zeldin take us backward.
#NYGovDebate
Just a few weeks ago, at the site where a 3-month old baby was killed by a reckless driver, a car sped through not one, but TWO consecutive red lights, in the direct presence of not one, but TWO occupied police vehicles.
It is completely absurd that Albany has the power to dictate to NYC how to manage their streets. Speed limits, traffic enforcement, Vizion Zero - Albany has no business dictating how we keep our streets safe.
NYC needs full home rule authority.
"Break the stranglehold. Return the power. Deploy the cameras. Save the lives."
NEW editorial from
@NYDNOpinions
urges Albany to give NYC freedom to expand critical

tools.
Traffic violence is a crisis. All levels of government must act.
📰
No. Saying “I’m sorry if you were upset” is not the same as saying “I’m sorry for upsetting/hurting you”.
It’s gaslighting, pure and simple, and in the year 2021, we all should know better.
So, world, do you think this constitutes an apology by Gov. Andrew Cuomo? If so, is it an acceptable apology? Why/why not? Or do you think he has nothing for which to apologize?
It comes after two former aides accused him of sexual harassment —>
We are proud to welcome Drag Queen Story Hour to the Gerritsen Beach Library and condemn the hate speech against it in the strongest possible terms. I stand with Brooklyn's LGBTQIA community against intolerance.
My official statement on the conclusion of this election and
@SenMartyGolden
's concession:
Now that the election is over, I am grateful to the people of Southern Brooklyn for their support and humbled by their trust in me to be our community’s voice in Albany.
It's official,
#SD22
: Eight-term Republican incumbent
@SenMartyGolden
concedes to upstart Democratic challenger
@agounardes
13 days after election day
The NY Democratic Party was a non-entity in any of our local battleground races in Brooklyn, the most D-heavy county in the US where we lost several incumbents.
I, for one, welcome the fact that national Dems are willing to step up, step in, and help us right the ship.
New: Jay Jacobs insists all is well in the NY Dem Party. But he hasn’t convinced national Democrats, who are spending $45m to stand up a shadow operation in the state, with full time staffers handling comms, oppo, and more, all basic party functions.
Let it be noted that this is already the law in NYC and it has been wildly successful in helping freelance workers recover millions (with an M) of unpaid earnings. This model works.

@shannonrwatts
“Zeldin is trying to have it both ways: wanting to be tough on crime while ignoring gun violence that drives the majority of violent crime, which is why he —and countless…like him— can’t be trusted to keep communities safe.”
That’s a wrap!
The
@NYSenate
just ended arguably the most productive legislative session in NY history.
I’ll say more about what we accomplished over the next few days.
For now, I’ll say: it’s been humbling & awesome to serve my community this way.
This has been an honor. TY.
IMPORTANT: We are about to start counting absentee ballots in state races. Check the status of your absentee ballot here:
If there is an error, you CAN fix it. Our race will be close, and it’s so important that your voice gets heard. 🗳
An update on where we stand: There are several thousand in-person votes which have not been reported, nearly 13,000 mail-in ballots which have been returned already, plus additional mail-in ballots which have not been processed or received. (1/3
Today I marched in memory of
#BreonnaTaylor
to call for racial justice w/ Archbishop
@Elpidophoros
&
@BPEricAdams
.
We marched w/ the spirit of Archbishop Iakovos who marched at Selma & we will continue to march until we fulfill our human creed that all people are created equal.
The state party invested some $ in my field operation in 2018, but they’ve been MIA down here ever since then. MIA in 2020 and certainly MIA in 2022.
New leadership will help us ensure we have a state party that is willing and able to work hard and deliver.
The Mayor was focused on lower Manhattan.
He should have been focused on Brooklyn.
(And Queens, Staten Island & the Bronx).
Our communities need resilience plans for the storms to come - and we deserve the same attention as Manhattan.
Yeah! Let’s just tell the janitors and cafeteria workers and teachers and staff and students who go to and from school early and late to go F themselves!
School play rehearsal at night? Good luck - your safety doesn’t matter!

It was an immense and humbling honor to introduce the next mayor of NYC,
@ericadamsfornyc
, to His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople (
@EcuPatriarch
), and to visit w/ His Eminence Archbishop
@Elpidophoros
of America this morning.
I’m honored that Dem Leader
@AndreaSCousins
has named me Chair of the Senate Civil Service & Pensions Committee.
I will always fight for our public employees & ensure that the choices we make today help secure the financial security of all who serve the public.
Just gonna leave this right here for all everyone who *STILL* thinks that driving 30 or 40 mph down a NYC street should still be acceptable and totally normal.
I’ve been in this foxhole twice before & know what it’s like to fight & win close races. We’re gonna count every vote, because that’s what democracy is about.
With ~ 1400 absentee ballots to count so far, & a 2-1 D to R enrollment advantage, I have every confidence we got this.
This campaign was about love over hate, truth over lies, facts over fear & unity over division, and that’s how I have led. We'll need to wait for every vote to be counted but just like 2020, we're confident there are enough absentee ballots to prevail once the count is complete.
This is opportunistic, cowardly, and sad.
If this comes to be, then Ari must immediately lose his positions as Democratic District Leader and State Committee Member.
With all the work we have yet to do to build a stronger, better party, there’s no place for turncoats.
NEW: Democratic Brooklyn Councilman
