I am a 6th generation California farmer in the Central Valley. Interested in collaborative solutions to the problems facing California to create lasting change.
I have never seen this type of
#flood
control measure before! Here is how some farmers deal with a breach in the Tulare Lake bottom. I assume they will pile some additional dirt on.

#agriculture
As
#flood
water recedes, the farmer will return and extract the trucks. No filing of insurance claims. He is an upstanding member of his community and was doing his best to protect his investment and local residents.
@matt_weiser
Not a solution I would endorse but water is flowing onto their property. I assume they evaluated other options. Desperate times I guess. Sometimes you have to react quickly and doubtful anyone was coming to help.
A photo update from 30 minutes ago - water contained and orchard saved - for now . . . a lot more water is heading into the basin - it's not over yet! May need more trucks!!

Knowing what I know now, this was the best option they had at the time. I made this comment prior to speaking with the farmer. Now that I know the full story I fully endorse what he did for his property and community. Easy to opine from a distance.
A community east of Porterville was deluged by water from the Tule River. Residents said it happened within 20 minutes and they didn't have any warning. Jesse Vad / SJV Water

I never thought much about
#garlic
until we started growing it. Each bulb is trimmed by hand in the field. The clippers use great skill and efficiency to remove the roots and stems.
#food
doesn't magically show up at the store - many hands are required.

@BowlesFarming
Made it through my testimony today in front of
@NatResources
. Still get nervous when speaking in public but doing my best to advocate for
#cawater
solutions. Thanks for the great support from my team at The Water Authority!
@RepBentz
@RepHuffman
You are exactly right - just spoke with the farmer - he was desperate to save his trees - his actions also helped prevent a local community from the floodwaters. Easy to criticize from afar.
@Jeff_Aiello
@agleader
I think folks who don’t farm don’t have the grasp of the the urgency of the flooding (from reading the comments on the original post). Crops are insured not the orchard itself. How dire the situation must be down there to have to resort to doing that.
Sad to see the narrative out there that farmers aren't protecting their workers. For us here on the
#farm
we are doing everything we can to support and protect our people who are vital to our success. Media wants to come here but we are not allowing due to concerns of workers
I am proud of my middle son, Luke, who is now an instrument-rated
#pilot
. He worked hard to achieve this certification and is currently working on his commercial rating.

Always great to see my friend
@JoeDelBosque
and advocate for
#cawater
and California
#agriculture
.
@DelBosqueFarms
is one of the best! We need to keep California family farms farming. High quality food and fiber produced with the highest standards.
Celebrating anything positive at this point. Longest run of my life this morning. Still working on pace but wasn’t pushing. Nice way to start the year.
Honored to be reelected as Chairman of the San Luis and Delta-Mendota Water Authority Board. I appreciate the opportunity to work with great members who represent communities, agriculture and environmental water use.
#cawater
collaboration is essential
What the F* is up with 2020! My amazingly talented sister reopens this ice cream shop in the midst of a pandemic and this happens! What kind of person does something like this?!
@Janeonfillmore
I don't often switch out my
#jeans
for a tuxedo, but had some fun getting dressed up last night in San Francisco. Honored to have my beautiful wife at my side. I enjoy the
#city
but want to get back to the
#farm
. Happy Holidays.
For land that will be "retired" by
#SGMA
we need an intelligent plan. Conversion to
#habitat
corridors planted to
#native
species will be a component and will reduce
#dust
, weeds and other issues while providing environmental benefits.
#cawater
New on the blog: A great interview with Isabel Jones & John Balmes about the dangers of airborne dust in the
#SJV
– including Valley fever – that includes some useful policy recommendations. Lots of public health impacts, but there are solutions.
Proud of my 17 year old for officially becoming a pilot today! It took a lot of hard work and focus. He is a great young man with a bright future.

The importance of
#agriculture
to the California economy is often downplayed by some detractors. Get the facts with this new report out today - .
#food

creation is a good use of

for a number of reasons. Thanks to

So this is what we deal with in
#agriculture
in addition to everything else. Pretty depressing that people think we are a dump for old possessions, trash and animals. As if there isn’t enough stress right now.

I my rush this morning I didn't attach the picture to go along with my
#carrot
post! Here they are getting their first official
#irrigation
of
#cawater
not in the form of

on the farm. For the past 4 plus months, the
#rain
took care of their needs.
The obligatory pic (note the

Building - my namesake Uncle Joe (3rd great grandpa) was an interesting guy (). Was a great week on the Hill talking

Was an absolute honor to be able to present Frances Mizuno with the "Golden Bucket" award from the San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority today! She is an amazing person and has given so much of herself to improving
#cawater
outcomes - another amazing

leader.
I don't want to be the annoying workout posting guy but today I accomplished a goal that I have been working on for a year. Half marathon in under 1:30. Proud that I could do it - now time for some rest!

Even on a foggy day, one of our

#covercrop
is growing nicely. Goal is to increase
#organic
matter and reduce inputs. Thankful to have excellent brand partners working with us on this exciting project
@BowlesFarming
While I will miss the lush green of the
#carrots
in the field, it is so rewarding to start the
#harvest
after many months of growing the crop. The tops are reincorporated into the
#soil
which adds organic matter. Proud to transform

We want our kids to spread their wings and fly - my middle son (17) took this too literally - having him soar over me on his solo flight was quite an experience. Very proud of him but glad he is safely on the ground.

I understand that building new or expanding existing
#surface
#storage
is not popular with some
#cawater
folks but the excuse that these investments are "too expensive" doesn't hold water. If we can build a train to get to LA faster we can invest in storage
#cawater
needs new leadership and thought. The
#womeninwater
I know bring a needed perspective and approach. I am thankful there are so many incredible women working on the

issues and challenges. Much respect
As the sun goes down the work begins in the

The sad reality for many farms - people come and help themselves to what we grow on the
#farm
. Nonviolent crime isn't punished so little fear of repercussions. People dump trash and animals - steal copper wire from pumps and solar - pretty depressing at times. Lack of respect
These folks stealing our
#watermelons
and posting on
@tiktok_us
. Pretty frustrating. The effort and
#cawater
that went into producing this
#food
to result in this. As a nonviolent crime there are few repercussions. A sad day for us on the
#farm
and sad commentary
Looks like the wetter option is winning out in the ensembles for the next couple of weeks! Precipitation over the next 10-14 days is now looking like it'll be near to above average for late Dec/early Jan! Some heavy precip even possible across NorCal at times--stay tuned.

We have removed all seating from our breakroom - a place where we have congregated every morning for decades to plan the day ahead. Moving to the larger shop area where we can observe proper social distancing to keep everyone healthy and safe.
