Rather than letting my bits of advice for #gamedev fall into the void, I've put together a thread for them that I'll keep updated every time I post something new. Caveat: I'm not actually a dev, just a broadcaster with years of experience at promoting new indie games.

Just a casual reminder that D&D isn't the only viable Tabletop RPG on the market. In fact, I'd argue that there are tons of better ones that will fit your preferences way better than D&D! To help you find one worth trying, I've made a easy 🧵for you!

Pathfinder/Starfinder: - are the closest possible analogue, as they're based on 3.5e D&D but have grown into their own over the last ~15 years. The rules & customization options are even crunchier than D&D, but I personally love that kind of stuff.

Indie Devs: do not follow this approach unless you've already released one or multiple wildly successful games. Surprise releasing games works when you're a big studio with some clout and the game is fantastic. Hi-Fi Rush could have easily doomed the studio if it wasn't so good.

Hot take: Roguelike Deckbuilders take WAY TOO LONG to beat. I love the genre, but sinking 2+ hours into every run just doesn't feel good anymore. Especially since the last ~40 minutes are usually the hardest, most punishing fights of a run. Turns it into a boring unfun slog.

This GIF is fascinating to me. On one hand, it does show quite well that I really can differentiate between 30 to 480 Hz. On the other hand, it perfectly shows why lower FPS can feel better in 2D. At 30 & 60 FPS, it's clearly a circle. At 120 it's rings. At 480 it's a smear.

Judging by today's discourse over what counts as an indie game, every publisher should spin up their own sub-studios and start having them self-publish their own games as "indie". Heck, I suppose Baldur's Gate 3 counts as an indie game now. They're independent after all.

The sheer amount of damage this one company has done to mid-sized studios and niche IPs is staggering. I know this is just corpo speak to try to keep their stock prices from nosediving, but even if they recover their reputation is toast.

Last year I decided to unsub from every streaming service, start only watching movies & shows through my local library, and buy the ones I like/liked in the past. Every day I feel validated that I made the right choice, but I'm also already running out of shelf space.

Damn, the Twitch leaks really do confirm what I already knew: the pay is absolute dogshit. I'm apparently the 5086th best paid streamer on the platform, and I get paid way less than minimum wage. Twitch revenue doesn't become 'liveable' till your in the top 1000 or higher.

Huge vouch for this demo. There aren't a whole lot of non-sidescroller metroidvanias in the world, and Crypt Custodian is clear evidence that the genre can work quite well in other perspectives! Plus cute cats are always a plus.

As an artist myself, I cannot in good conscience cover games that use generative models, and I've had to crank my "do not cover" filters up dramatically to protect myself now that AI is everywhere. So if I know who to trust beforehand, it's way easier to choose who to feature.

Next Fest devs: please implement saving & auto saving for your demos! I've had a couple of games I'm really hyped about crash ~15-30 minutes in, and having to start over from the top absolutely wrecks my enthusiasm. Even if you're sure it's 100% stable, it's probably not.

A/B options are the essence of good Roguelike design, and no one can ever convince me otherwise. Don't get me wrong, there's room for linear upgrade systems, RNG, or some railroading here and there. But the less agency a player has, the less ownership they'll have over the run.

"AI" is a kind of an unfun litmus test for me nowadays. If a company uses or promotes it, then I know they're totally okay with artists being stolen from and exploited- and it makes me seriously doubt their ethics as well as the authenticity of their future creations.

Doesn't Duolingo know that using machine translation to sloppily translate your homework for a language class is an easy way to fail the assignment?

Well, if you're a fan of Duolingo, I'd advise you stop using it now. They just laid off most of their human staff and will be relying mostly on AI now.

I wrote about why the long-term loss of what Twitter used to be sucks, if you want to see a more business-side perspective on its decline, and why social media is crucial for small creators in general.

I really hate AI advocates on forums. I gave a dev some tips on how to identify AI art so they can avoid accidentally paying a prompter over a real artist. And a wild AI bro got mad "because AI can easily fake layers & sketches so why bother checking for AI in the first place?"

The Steam Next Fest is almost over, so let's talk about some of the ones that stood out to me the most! This isn't a comprehensive best-of list, and unfortunately I didn't have time to get to every game on my list either. I'll try to play more if the demos stick around.

I've seen this explained in a thousand different ways, but this is probably the best and clearest visualization of why voting in the US is a mess. There's other reasons, but this one is huge.

Interesting little factoid. Because Tim's sub button is going away Twitch is emailing people to redeem a free sub on the platform to any streamer you want. Not gonna lie that's actually a really good idea. Hopefully people use that sub to help out smaller creators.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but please, please do not send out a gift box to a creator without asking first. It's nice to get cool stuff, but I just got a big box of stuff that I don't want for a game I have zero interest in, and now I'm going to have to get rid of it.

Since I've got a hot minute between Next Fest demos, I put together an ordered overview of my methods of finding cool new games to cover! I doubt there's anything surprising on this list, but it might be a handy perspective for developers & indie fans all the same.
