It's frustrating that so many people are defending their purchase of the upcoming magic terf school game by saying they're doing it to support the developers.
If that were the case, they'd be buying indie games en masse to directly support devs, and not one specific AAA game.
If you're compromising your ethics to buy a game for a franchise you like, that's not really fine, but everyone has their vices.
Just don't lie about why you're doing it. It's embarrassing.
It's like buying an overpriced electric car despite knowing the brand's owner sucks, because otherwise the people who works for them might lose their job eventually.
As long as HP is culturally relevant, JK will be relevant too. And the longer she's around and the more relevant she is, the louder her awful opinions will be.
@Nexus_Tree
Absolutely those too! I still honestly cannot believe kid-me read the books and thought 'yep, that makes sense' without too much cognitive dissonance. Credit to her for making horrible things seem banal or even good, I guess?
@Wanderbots
I disagree a little. You are right that no one should defend themselves buying the game for what it will do for people working for the developer. But a lot of us are just tryna relive the childhood memories and itβs unfair to us to be labeled someone who supports her ideas.
@nermilicious
I respect that desire, but JK herself has said that the franchise's continued success & profits indicate that people support her and her horrible ideas, and that includes buying the new game.
I wish it were otherwise, but it's not. Nostalgia is good, supporting hate... isn't.
@fuwafuwanya_
She's extremely anti-trans, and her depiction of banker goblins (clearly a dig at Jews) and house elves (slaves) in the books were pretty terrible as well.
Any of those are enough for me to stay away from a person. All three means I'll never support them again.
@Wanderbots
What kills me is this is supposed to be a stand alone story and they are just cashing in on the notoriety that comes with the name. They could have built this separately from JK and avoid all of this.
@Wanderbots
To be honest? Until you mentioned it, I never heard of it. And while it's cool enough that I might watch someone ELSE play it, (mostly to support that person, and see what the hype is about) but I wouldn't give JK one red cent if I have the choice. (And I do)
@Wanderbots
Yeah, better support the giant warner bros company or they might go out of business π€‘ Maybe we'll get lucky and the game will be terrible ?
@Wanderbots
Also, for fans of the "Magical Academy" trope, in order to give those fans options, check out Andrew Rowe's "Arcane Ascension" series! (Heck, I even decided to start my own this year)
