Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We can get to zero by demanding that governments design transportation systems to put safety first.
We got tired of waiting for our local leaders to act 😴
So we're introducing our new pedestrian safety pilot: BRICKS (TM)! 🧱
Thanks to
@nicthedoor
&
@aboutherevideos
for creating this video for us!
Yesterday, a cyclist was killed by the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup in East Van. People will use the word "accident" but this didn't need to happen. A long list of policy failures got us here. This thread will document these failures 🧵
Here's a video we took at Main & Terminal. Note that turning cars are blocking the crossing the ENTIRE time the "walk sign" is on.
We grant pedestrians 7 seconds out of a 2 minute light cycle, cars take it all anyway, and the VPD wonders why people cross on the flashing hand.
Here’s a another video in our ‘road safety is a shared responsibility’ series.
Traffic signals are set up to keep us safe and to keep traffic moving. Not following the rules can be dangerous, clog things up, and lead to frustrations.
#RoadSafety
As we've done with emission standards and (inside-the-car) safety standards, it's time for all levels of government to start implementing vehicle size standards. Simple physics guarantees that these oversized vehicles will be killers, as we've tragically seen again.
"The truck has been seized and will undergo a mechanical inspection" how about a goddamn VISUAL inspection.
If you can't drive around in a parking lot without killing someone maybe your truck is TOO LARGE I'm sorry to everyone who is upset by this.
We want to be absolutely clear. Our group has only one agenda: to prevent people from being injured and killed on our streets. We will never shy away from criticizing any person or policy that stands in the way.
@VisionZeroYVR
Very sad to see loss of life here. Also sad to see once again this group chooses to pick a fight and spread misinformation. This helps do nothing. You are making assumptions that r once again completely incorrect because you don’t have the facts. Zero Credibility.
This stretch of Hastings is the most dangerous area for pedestrians in Vancouver, so the speed was reduced to 30km/h.
But because no actual changes were made to the street's design, no one slows down.
We watched for half an hour and didn't see a single car driving the limit.
Meanwhile in Vancouver we spent a ton of money piloting a school street for 2 years, found out that kids, parents, and staff absolutely loved it, then cancelled it because a couple residents complained about parking.
Paris now has 180 gorgeous ‘school streets.’ They are pedestrianized and landscaped streets around schools - to mitigate crashes, prioritize walking to school, reduce noise and air pollution. No brainer, really.
The speed limit in Stanley Park is 30km/h, but how fast are drivers actually going? We took our radar gun to the park to find out.
Is removing the bike lane and mixing cars with people on bikes really a good idea?
(1/5) In a 4-month span between December to April, three pedestrians were killed along the same short stretch of Lougheed Hwy in Maple Ridge. We often hear from police that "speed was not a factor" so we took our radar gun out to Lougheed to see how fast drivers are going.
Plans for a one-block bike lane in Dundarave got scrapped b/c residents would have lost parking on one side of the street. Kudos to
@WestVanDistrict
council for this brave decision, looking at the block it's hard to imagine where residents could have parked otherwise.
But there are no cameras, because
@BrianVMontague
single-handedly killed Boyle's motion, to do more "studies" instead. It's so clear from this map that they could have made a difference here. These policy choices KILL PEOPLE. Let him know: CLRmontague
@vancouver

@BrianVMontague
@christineeboyle
@Vote4ABC
As many others have pointed out, there's a red light camera here but no speed camera - which is what we clearly referenced. It could have helped the investigation. More around the city would discourage reckless driving. You said no to this. We need action now.
Under
@christineeboyle
's motion, this intersection would have received a speed camera. Unfortunately
@BrianVMontague
and
@Vote4ABC
decided more studies were needed first. Well, here's another tragic statistic for your "study". When is it time for action? (1/3)
Hi
@RichmondRCMP
next time you need volunteers to make a road safety video for you please reach out, we will happily make one that isn't outrageous tone-deaf garbage.
Richmond RCMP have responded to the feedback from the video to CBC News, calling it "extremely disheartening" and saying that "the video is not about X being more right than Y."
What hastings looks like right now & what it could become.
Safer streets are entirely possible, we know what they look like, let’s make them happen! 🚶♀️🚴🛴🚗🚎💖
Our roads shouldn't be designed in a way that a "momentary lapse of attention" leads to someone being killed. A $500 fine and no driving ban is not justice for someone with a "RAPTOR" sticker on their oversized pickup whose attention strays in crosswalks.
The statistics don't lie - tell City of Vancouver Councillors to vote AGAINST wasting $6 million taxpayer dollars to double road space on Beach Ave west of Denman, sacrificing public safety for motorist convenience.
What's really "pathetic and disgusting" is how many people die on our roads because our leaders refuse to act. Our politics is to have pedestrians stop dying. We're surprised you don't agree with that goal Brian.
@VisionZeroYVR
@christineeboyle
@Vote4ABC
There is a camera at that location. You clearly have zero details about this incident and don’t know the facts. Pathetic and disgusting that you make the tragic death of this woman about your group’s political positioning.
The most effective way to reduce harm and save lives is to build roads that are safe by design. We would love to see videos from the RCMP educating drivers about how different pieces of infrastructure help save lives.
Thanks to
@CBCnews
for having us on!
#safey
Very disappointed in today's outcome, which removed everything good from the West End plan and only resulted in more cars on Beach Ave. Many speakers noting how bad this is for safety & climate - and will cost millions in taxpayer money when we have so many other urgent issues.
Well, it's official. ABC has killed the "West End Waterfront Parks, Beaches, and Transportation Vision", but is re-introducing two way car traffic to Beach Ave west of Denman.
Note that Bligh voted against B the restoring-two-way-car traffic part!
Speed is the top contributing factor in fatal car crashes in BC, involved in nearly 30% of the 1,391 fatalities from 2016-2020.
Reducing speed limits, and increased enforcement of existing limits, will save lives.
Thanks to an unfortunate experiment made by the Parks Board, we now know that removing the Stanley Park bike lane resulted in nearly 5 times more drivers travelling at speeds that are 90% likely to kill a park visitor in a collision.
Road safety is a shared responsibility.
That’s why it’s so disappointing to see our government put out material like this that erases THEIR responsibility to build safe steeets.
Safety starts upstream.
Infrastructure is the most effective way to prevent dangerous crashes.

A map of all the intersections where a pedestrian was hit by a driver from 2016-2020 (ICBC reported; real number likely much higher). That's 2591 total, over 500 a year, 10 every single week.

We're absolutely perplexed at the
@VancouverPD
statement re: this week's fatal pedestrian crash on Hastings.
Trying to blame pedestrians walking into the roadway when they just investigated a driver killing someone on the sidewalk is beyond comprehension.
#BREAKING
: A Vancouver crash that killed a baby and seriously hurt her father in 2021 was the result of a tragic, momentary lapse of attention and not a criminal act, a B.C. judge has ruled, acquitting the driver of all charges.

We've met with Lisa and we know she cares. But with due respect, we don't need condolences, we need action. Hastings is a wide 6 lane street with high volume fast moving traffic, and a ton of pedestrians. Those things don't mix. You have the power to change things. (1/2)
My sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.

Swagger is fine but we are more into STAGGERing green lights after crosswalk lights.
Meet “leading pedestrian intervals” (LPIs). People using the crosswalk get a head start while traffic lights stay red. Result: up to 60% fewer crashes.
This one is at Bute/Davie.
Safe routes to school are incredibly important, and providing a car-free “school street” on one side of each school is a great way to start. They are overwhelmingly popular across the globe.
Unfortunately, the city does not support these initiatives with infrastructure.

Last year, council had the chance to approve a protected bike lane along Broadway.
@KenSimCity

We welcome these initiatives from ABC but to be clear, none of them - no lights, paint, or signs - will "require" drivers to slow down near schools. Only physical built infrastructure will do that. We want raised crosswalks in front of every school, as a minimum.
ABC is taking action with expanded slow zones, new crosswalks, more crossing lights, and more traffic-calming measures across Vancouver.
As we look to the future, our team will continue to find ways to make streets and sidewalks safer for all road users.
4 pedestrians hit by drivers in the Lower Mainland in the last 24h, 2 dead. Let's take a look (deep sigh).
(1) 81-year-old man killed at Scott Road and 75A in Surrey. A high-speed 6-lane road through a residential neighbourhood. Predictable tragedy.

@PtFry

It's now confirmed that a 21 year old has been killed after being hit by a taxi driver while crossing the street. Absolutely devastating, our thoughts go out to the victim's family. We will continue to push our leaders to make changes that put an end to these tragedies.

@PtFry
has a new motion coming to council on April 10th that pushes for safer speeds in residential areas, more safety infrastructure and upgrades to bikeways. No surprises that we love it!
More from us here:
Motion here:
We demand safe infrastructure.
Where kids are crossing, they aren’t walking into a space for cars, drivers are entering a space for kids. Every crossing near a school should look like this.
A 15-year-old girl has serious and life altering injuries. Why did we not have a raised crosswalk or speed bumps?
She and her family are experiencing something unfathomably awful.
I need you to understand it was predictable and easily preventable.
Today a person cycling was killed by a trucker in
@CityofSurrey
. Narrow painted bike lanes crossed by vehicular slip lanes. No real protection from trucks. A predictably fatal design brought to you by a city with a Vision Zero program
A very serious crash involving a driver hitting a student in front of Lord Byng Secondary school.
Why is there no crosswalk? No light? Why are U-turns practically encouraged? Why is this pathetic yellow sign the only protection kids get?
A woman riding her bike now battles for her life after being hit by a driver at Maple and 4th.
West 4th Ave is packed with homes, businesses, and people. Why do we allow a pseudo-freeway to run through it? We know things like this will happen.
Thrilled to see
@PtFry
's motion for safer slower streets pass unanimously! Huge thanks to Clr Fry and also to
@LisaDominato
for her work on this. Now we hope staff comes back with implementation recommendations quickly, and that they're rapidly adopted.
We're rolling out an interactive crash map that plots all vehicle crashes resulting in serious injury or death from January 2023 onwards.

Not sure who to thank for revamping the kids "back to school" road safety graphic with tips for drivers.
But thank you.
While it's important to teach kids road smarts, it's crucial every one of us who gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle looks out for their safety.
FAILURE 1. The lack of protected east-west cycling infrastructure across the city. This crash happened at 11th and Clark, 2 blocks south of Broadway. And don't say 10th is better. See the map of ICBC-reported cyclist collisions below. 10th is the worst street in the entire city.
We're starting a new tradition this Halloween. When most kids are happily running around getting candy, it's simply not safe to drive. Please don't drive this Halloween night.
"After lowering the speed limit by 10 km/h, there were 25.1 per cent fewer collisions and 31 per cent fewer injuries and fatalities throughout [Edmonton]."
Let's do this in Vancouver, the evidence is clear.
Drivers speed through this stretch and blow red lights ALL THE TIME. Imagine if they got 2 tickets within 3 blocks every time they sped through here, and some red light tickets too. And remember, they come with warning signs. How quickly would they start driving more safely?
3 killed in
@CityofVancouver
this weekend due to wide highway-like roads with 50 kph speed limits.
30 kph is the max acceptable speed for built-up areas with vulnerable road users such as pedestrians.
@bcndp
lower default speed, roads must be redesigned prioritizing safety.
FAILURE 2. A lack of enforcement and deterrents. This is a huge one. Under
@christineeboyle
's motion last year, both Clark & Broadway and Clark & 12th would have received speed and red light cameras. This would have been huge.
Here’s a statistic: in 93% of cases where people riding bikes are hit by drivers in Vancouver, the cyclist has right-of-way.
We need infrastructure that makes it less likely for drivers to make mistakes like this.
I think it’s past time to call it — Vancouver is no longer a leader among cities in new urban biking & active transportation infrastructure. It’s now joined the ranks of cities that made strong progress in the past, but at best has stalled & in fact is sadly now moving backwards.
There have been 55 incidents of drivers hitting pedestrians at Main and Hastings in the last 5 years. Enough pontificating, time for action. Already plenty of data. The city must be proactive in stopping these incidents from continuing to happen, not reactive.

FAILURE 3: Vehicle size and design. The person who killed this cyclist was driving a Dodge Ram pickup, possibly (but not definitively) the one in this photo. We know, as a fact, that these larger cars are more deadly. When will policy makers act ?
The worst intersection in MOUNT PLEASANT: Main x Kingsway x 7th Avenue. Probably no surprise! 3 roads meet in a way that confuses many drivers, as evidenced by 342 crashes in 5 years. Also a nightmare for pedestrians, who have to cross 4 streets just to get across Main once.
Over the next few weeks, we'll highlight the worst intersection (highest number of crashes) in every Vancouver neighbourhood. Follow along and see if you recognize any near you.
FAILURE 5: 11th and Clark is deadly by design. The median and the sign here encourage cyclists to cross, but absolutely nothing is done to protect them, or to alert drivers to look out for this. This is outright negligence. Let Engineering Manager lon.laclaire
@vancouver
.ca know.
Please read this thread and watch the videos. Why are we making kids run across a wide busy road full of high speed cars to get to school? Where is the infrastructure to protect them? 16th Ave needs to be fixed, we need raised crosswalks before another tragedy happens.
Today I toured the W16th schools zone with the newly formed West 16th Ave Schools Safety Coalition. This road, which runs adjacent to Byng Secondary, is where a 15yo student was recently struck by a driver. There isn’t even a marked crosswalk.
#SafeRoutesToSchool
FAILURE 4: No proper crash investigations. Yes, the police will investigate, but they look for things that individuals did wrong (was the driver intoxicated? Speeding?) This is important to know, but we never investigate the infrastructure or design that led to a death.
(1/5) Imploring the media - yes, including traffic-oriented accounts - to use descriptive language in the active voice.
An accurate headline is: "A pedestrian is dead after being hit by the driver of a charter bus in downtown Vancouver."

We are disappointed by the motion to remove the
#StanleyPark
bike lane. Part of systematic road safety is separating road users at greatly different speeds. This is opposite of that
We are deeply disappointed that Vancouver's Mayor Ken Sim and ABC council refused to lower the speed limit on Cornwall Avenue to 30 km/h, deciding to keep the speed limit at the much deadlier speeds of 50 km/h and 40 km/h. 🧵 1/7
This issue is in the hands of the Federal govt. Let Minister of Transport
@pablorodriguez
know that enough is enough. It's time to take action. Cars this size have no place on our roads without a commercial license. These aren't toys, they're killers.
A woman in her 40s was struck and killed by a dump truck driver at 23rd St & Lonsdale Avenue in
@CityOfNorthVan
.
This poorly designed intersection has seen 136 crashes between 2017-21, with 45 of those resulting in death or serious injury*.
Surrey has a huge pedestrian fatality problem and now another young person has lost their life. Awful street design. Drivers speed down this hill all the time. Those painted bike "lanes" could be hardened with concrete, making the road narrower. (1/2)
P.S. here’s the distance between the crosswalk and the curb where the pedestrian landed (see dog) to get a sense of just how fast that driver was going.
Focusing in on 10th, the intersection at Clark has the most crashes on the entire route. It's known by anyone who rides to be extremely dangerous. If someone chooses to take 11th instead, this should be no surprise.
Canada should copy the proven safety features
@TfL
requires in London for heavy goods vehicles.
Road safety is a shared responsibility, it’s time for
@Transport_gc
to do their part.
It seems insane that we let large trucks drive through downtown Toronto on city streets for deliveries etc. we don’t even seem to mandate a lot of basic safety devices like skirts around the sides.
This past Thursday saw 2 more crashes resulting in vehicles going onto sidewalks or into buildings. Sheer good fortune that no one outside the vehicles was injured.
These events are becoming all too common. We need traffic calming & sidewalk bollards everywhere.
Some recent photos of crashes in the Lower Mainland that ended up with vehicles on the sidewalk. One of them was deadly.
Larger vehicles, high speed limits, and a lack of infrastructure such as raised crosswalks and bollards causes these tragedies. Not "distracted walking."
@vancolour
@DailyHiveVan
We'd much prefer slower speeds, smaller cars, and raised crosswalks, but while we wait on our leaders to act we'll do what we can 😉
A quick google search pulls up multiple videos of drivers blowing through red lights at 10th and Clark, almost (or actually) hitting cyclists. We've all seen it first hand.
2 examples:
Realistically, the answer to a lot of these questions is probably "no." But if just one answer was "yes", this person would still be alive. We are so vulnerable on the road. We need layers of protection. And every single level of leadership responsible is letting us down. /🧵
Fall is the season of campaigns from institutions like

reminding vulnerable road users to not get killed by drivers. Not to miss out, here's our infographic for your street safety awareness!
No amount of bright clothing or eye contact is going to help when drivers crash into each other and a car is propelled into a store and kills someone on the sidewalk. The speed limit here on Hastings is 30km/h, but the design remains deadly.
Speaking of "missing the mark", Premier

pointing out how inadequate some of our bike routes are. 10th Ave is another widely used bike route that looks just like this, and has the most cyclists hit by vehicles of any street in Vancouver. More modal filters on bike routes please!

In the context of more recent threats against our bike network by our city leaders, let's show them how much we love to ride.
Bring friends and family, this is a fun and safe event for all!
I had SO much fun riding with Critical Mass Vancouver last night. I’m so excited for people in Vancouver to be able to cycle, skateboard and scoot safely over Granville Bridge every day once the City of Vancouver installs protected active mobility lanes.
A pedestrian was “dead” after a presumably unrelated “vehicle crash”. But another was “fatally struck and killed” by a “cyclist”, so violently they died twice.
Same journalist.
Same news outlet.
Same tragic scenario over the same weekend.
We're linking a couple threads below containing resources on why 'right turns on red' are so dangerous to pedestrians and why they should be banned, along with all other vehicle movements that intersect with active crosswalks.
Another pedestrian was struck downtown this evening in Vancouver at Georgia & Burrard, likely hit by a right-turning driver. The extent of their injuries are unknown.
One of the biggest reasons leading to overcrowding, unreliability, and lost money is buses being stuck in traffic. Cities can play a huge role here by creating dedicated bus lanes on strategic routes. Please do this!
