Last night we rallied for
@BetoORourke
in Austin.
We need a leader who listens, who cares about our teachers and our children, and who will fix our grid. As Governor, Beto will be FOR the PEOPLE!

Suppressing peaceful protest with intimidation is a needless escalation. We deserve an explanation for why such extreme actions are being taken to suppress the voices of seemingly peaceful protestors. Do better, UT.
We need to make Austin a 10 minute city. Everyone should be within 10 minutes of their grocery store, pharmacy, clinic, restaurant, park, etc. And we should be able to CHOOSE our preferred mode of transportation to get there.
HUGE NEWS: Travis County Commissioners just unanimously passed policy direction dedicating about $110 million of the Federal relief dollars to provide 2,000 much needed housing units for our unhoused neighbors! ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ
COVID VACCINE UPDATE: Of the 14K appointments, APH made available last night, only 3400 were booked. We need to move to a neighborhood model, go offline & partner w/ trusted community orgs to do outreach. Clearly the online scheduling system isn't working.
Is it a surprise that the same state that has refused to invest in healthcare, education, and flooding, has also failed to invest in electric transmission infrastructure? ๐ค
BREAKING: Austin is now in Stage 2!! This is the first time we've been in Stage 2 since May 2021. Masking is still recommended until March 20 after the Spring Festival Season. ๐ท
Great to meet with

๐BIG NEWS Our Austin Public Libraries are going fine free! Fines are a barrier to access info, knowledge & resources for those who need library services the most.
Thx
@AustinPublicLib
, Library Commission &
@kathietovo
for leading on this resolution & inviting me to co-sponsor.
Why I'm pushing for an
@HEB

Everybody deserves access to quality, healthy, affordable food. After years of ongoing advocacy, I sent a letter last week to HEB executives asking for the prioritization of a grocery store in Del Valle...
I filed legislation to pay every teacher $70k, but maybe we should pay them like babysitters:
$15 per kid x 22 kids per class x 6 hours per day x 180 days per year =
$356,400 annual salary
In Austinโs 100+ years history, Iโm only the second Latina to ever get elected to
#ATXCouncil
.
In 2020, I was the only Latina running citywide so todayโs news that we have a Latina in each of the 4 runoffs is HUGE.
When
#ATXCouncil
added โmental healthโ as an option to 911 response calls, weโve seen a 80-85% diversion rate! Austinites can now be served by a mental health clinician to help in emergencies.
๐arrest rates were 45% lower
๐use of force were 56% lower
UPDATE: the City of Austin will operate three (3) Cold Weather Shelters on a 24-hour basis with the ability to expand capacity.
One Texas Center, 505 Barton Springs Rd, will serve as embarkation point where staff will register people & provide transportation to designated site.
On April 18th, weโll be briefed on the ongoing partnership between Texas DPS and APD. This agreement resulted from closed-door negotiations, which excluded members of Austin City Council. Iโve since made my displeasure clear in my conversations with the Mayor and City Manager. ๐งต
We're making childcare WAY more accessible (๐งต)
For decades, building childcare facilities hasn't been allowed in most of Austin (yellow/red). My first item of 2023 is changing this. Now, nearly our entire city will be zoned for childcare development (green).
Our friends and neighbors at Meanwhile Brewing Co, are offering free potable (drinking) water at the brewery today, February 18, 2021, from 11am-5pm. You must bring your own containers.
Meanwhile Brewing Co. is located at 3901 Promontory Point Drive, Austin, TX, 78744.
Austin just became a Soccer City! โฝ๏ธ
Today,
#ATXCouncil
passed item 59, which will work to expand public access to our cityโs soccer fields, increase funding for our Parks and Rec youth programs, and foster better collaboration between our City, County, schools, and soccer orgs.
Nearly 2K of my constituents are going to bed tonight without power yet again. Iโm calling on
@austinenergy
to provide a restoration timeline. Our community needs this VITAL information to make plans for this week. Kids are going back to school & people are heading back to work!
OUR RENTERS' RIGHTS AGENDA: With our housing and displacement crisis worsening each day, itโs time to take action and do right by renters in Austin. Constant $200-$300 rent increases are completely unreasonable for Austinites... ๐๐ฝ๐งต
โก๏ธNot fair to South Austin โฌ ๏ธ
This is some of the feedback I observed during todayโs Open House on the potential scenarios for Austin Light Rail. As a rep of South Austin Iโll be paying special attention to how these scenarios benefit & serve our communities.
We all want the same thing - public safety that works for ALL Austinites. Unfortunately, the numbers only confirm what we already suspected: the DPS operation is disproportionately harming communities of color.(1/2)
Absolutely terrible that Google has laid off
@AlphabetWorkers
. This morning, we had an item on our Council Agenda to encourage Google to engage in good-faith negotiations with the YouTube Music Team. Shame on Google. Workers deserve to be paid a livable wage & treated fairly.
Gone are the days where we put our heads in the sand and ignore the growth of our City.
#ATXCouncil
's HOME Initiative will begin modernizing our zoning laws while removing barriers to newer, more diverse forms of housing.
I'm proud to announce that my very first item of the year JUST PASSED! This childcare item breaks down barriers that make it difficult to build new and expand existing childcare facilities in our communities. I'm so excited to continue working with the new

We just passed ALL ITEMS in our Renters' Rights Agenda! In about 10 days,

City of Austin, in partnership w/ the LBJ School, recently conducted an analysis of the cost to produce housing in Austin & ways to reduce costs. ๐งต
Hereโs what they found:
โข land & construction costs = largest cost drivers
โข building permit fees rep a 1-3% of total dev costs
My heart is aching right now. Weโve been in a long line of traffic trying to get to the Del Valle food distribution site and we are still a mile away. The need for food is so great right now. Cars are lined up a mile away from the site waiting to pick up a box of food. ๐
Working from home can reduce emissions, save taxpayer money, and increase employee retention. I stand in proud solidarity with our City employees and their efforts for a fair telework policy

Congrats to

on his victory tonight! In Chito, D4 is getting a proven working-class champion representing them at City Hall. I look forward to working with him in bringing community-driven solutions to our cityโs most pressing issues.
We need to CEASE not just suspend.
Weโve been raising the flag that many in our community didnโt feel safe & the disproportionate impact this โpartnershipโ was having on our east side communities. Itโs unfortunate it took comprising the safety of a child for this to happen.
Today I met Harris County Judge
@LinaHidalgoTX
! Fun fact: Judge Hidalgo governs a county that is larger/more populous than 28 states! We connected over initiatives related to flood resilience.

Iโll be voting to support
@GregCasar
as our next Mayor Pro Tem. At a time when our Latino community is disproportionately affected by COVID19, we need strong leadership in our response & recovery efforts. I look forward to working with
#atxcouncil
on addressing these disparities.
Iโm thankful to my colleagues for trusting me with this position.
I first ran for office to make a difference for the people of District 4. Iโm looking forward to building the consensus necessary to tackle our greatest challenges as Mayor Pro Tem.

I'm bringing forward an item (88) this week that will make AC cooling a requirement for all residencies. Taking one step outside will show you why we need this. As we combat an unforgiving summer, folks need (and deserve) a cool place to stay.
Today, there's no requirement for housing in Austin to have A/C. Council could soon set a new standard for residential cooling.
A 2022 sampling of city code violations related to A/C found most occurred in East Austin, and in larger apartment complexes
Bravo Austin Public Library! I join you & our entire library community in maintaining a Library for All environment for Austinites. Knowledge is power and we must reject far-right attempts to infringe on our freedom to READ! ๐ โ๐ฝ

Austin FC was robbed last night. Disappointed to the see the league celebrating this โsaveโ instead of talking openly about how we fix these situations.
No Austinite should suffer from being uninsured. Thatโs why Iโm bringing forward an item to declare our support & solidarity for federal Medicare for All legislation.
Simply put, the City of Austin believes everyone deserves essential, life-saving medical services.

PROJECT CONNECT UPDATE: Exciting progress on the new Pleasant Valley MetroRapid route which will run from Mueller to Goodnight Ranch. This route will feature zero-emission electric buses and bring additional high-capacity transit options, connecting our Eastside communities.
Texas' attorney general wants to shut down a faith-based group that has sheltered migrants for decades, escalating conservativesโ targeting of Catholic organizations and amping up the stateโs own immigration enforcement operation.

just passed a HISTORIC amendment to increase the city employee minimum wage to $20/hr. This increase will raise wages for thousands of workers, fill vacancies, and provide Austinites with reliable and quality city services across the board!

From day one, we ran a campaign that was FOR the people whom we seek to serve.
SO CLOSE. With a 5-5 vote, my effort to stop fuel tanks from being located so close to D2 residents failed by one vote. I first want to thank my community & advocates who came together to make their voices heard.

If more guns meant safer communities, Texas would be the safest state in the entire country. Yet, the recent mass shooting in Allen serves as another daunting reminder of our state's failed leadership. We can't continue to normalize these tragedies.
