This is the exact moment that workers on the
@Youtube
Music team learned they were being laid off by
@Google
- as they were testifying in front of their local Austin city council.
We're Alphabet workers. We’ve been organizing for over a year, & we’re finally ready to share why.
This morning, we're announcing
#AWU
, the first union open to *all* workers at any Alphabet company.
Every worker deserves a union—including tech workers.
The past few years at Google have been tumultuous: secret military AI projects, multi-million dollar payouts to execs who sexually harassed our coworkers, profiting from hate speech, & more.
Coworkers who've voiced concerns have even been fired, illegally, as retaliation.
And the only thing that's changed anything is worker organizing.
Worker organizing got Project Maven & Project Dragonfly cancelled.
It got 20,000+ Googlers to walk out against sexual harassment.
It got $15 min wage & healthcare for contractors.
And it's going to get us more.
BREAKING:Google Maps Worker Victory!
Today, the Google Maps contract workers informed management that they planned to go on strike due to the unsafe working conditions imposed by the 6/6 RTO date.
In less than 3hrs workers won a 90 day extension—this is the power of organizing.
Our statement on yesterday's coup attempt at the Capitol.
Social media companies, including YouTube, an Alphabet product, bear tremendous responsibility for the growing fascist movement in the US.
We have organized against this before & we stand ready to do so again—as a union.
“engaging directly” with workers?
This is a classic union busting technique, “3rd partying” the union, making it out like the Union is some outside force.
We, the workers, ARE THE UNION. We're not some outside force that will come between workers & mgmt. It is us, the workers.
Yet problems persist.
We still have discrimination, harassment, & retaliation at Google. Over half our workforce are TVCs—paid less, w/fewer benefits, for often the exact same work. A few at the top are getting enormously rich while others see nothing of that wealth.
That isn't the company we want to work for. We deserve a workplace that respects us, where we can work for a fair wage without fear of abuse or discrimination. We deserve meaningful control over the projects we work on & the direction of this company.
WE WON!!!!!
This group of
@googlefiber
contract workers with
@BDSConnected
in Kansas City, MO overwhelmingly voted UNION YES.
They are the FIRST unionized Google Fiber workers &
@AlphabetWorkers
's FIRST official bargaining unit.
So we're building on all these past organizing efforts & more to create a structure for a unified worker voice.
We're organizing w/
@CWAUnion
@CODE_CWA
, w/dues-paying members, an elected board, & paid organizers.
We'll work to undo inequalities & injustices at Alphabet.
THE FACE OF VICTORY!!
41 YES’s
0 NO’s
11 weeks on strike & months of union-busting couldn’t stop this wave of worker power!
Solidarity for the win 💪💪
Next, the bargaining table 😎
We're outside Google's SF offices now, speaking out against Project Nimbus, the $1.2 billion AI contract with the Israeli gov.
We're all demanding Google cut this contract.
#NoTechforApartheid
We started today with 200+
#AWU
members, the result of more than a year of intense discussions, one-on-one's, & other organizing.
We ended today, our first day as a public group, with over 400 members.
It's the first Monday of 2021. We're going to keep it up this whole year.
Union members were involved in drafting this petition, which calls on Google to condemn these attacks, fund Palestinian relief organizations, & investigate any contracts "that support Israeli violations of Palestinian rights."
Tech is not neutral here.
#FreePalestine
More than 250 Google employees have signed an internal letter calling on the company to support Palestinians & protect anti-Zionist speech. The writers are part of a new employee resource group that formed in response to Zionist sentiment in Jewglers, Google's Jewish ERG.
BREAKING 🚨
YouTube Music workers are starting a strike today after
@Cognizant
and
@Google
management announced they were forcing workers to return to office on February 6.
This is the first strike for
@AlphabetWorkers
’ and the first known strike at Google.
#YouTubeStrike
Don't think this was the launch they were planning on for the new year.....
But it is the launch we've spent over a year building!
We're so thankful for all the support from workers & unions around the world.
We're humbled, honored & inspired.
Workers of the world unite!
Solidarity to all the Amazon fulfillment workers pushing for a union in Bessemer.
Every tech worker—in the cafeterias, in the self-driving cars, in the offices, in the warehouses—deserves democracy & representation at work.
We're with you all the way.
While Alphabet leadership claims "full responsibility," that is little comfort for the 12,000 workers who are now without jobs. This is unacceptable behavior for a company that made $17B in profits last quarter alone.
Caste discrimination is a real issue & Google must take action to establish caste-equity in the workplace.
We stand with Thenmozhi Soundararajan, Tanuja Gupta & all those who experience and speak out against caste-based oppression.
We've just filed an unfair labor practice charge against a Google contractor, Modis, for illegally telling workers not to talk about wages & retaliating against a union member b/c of her advocacy.
We won't stand for mistreatment of any Alphabet worker.
WE DON'T WANT TO PAY TO SLEEP BY THE OFFICE!
WE WANT TO HAVE A VOICE IN SHAPING BASIC COMPANY POLICIES THAT IMPACT OUR DAY TO DAY LIVES.
WE DON'T WANT A HOTEL ROOM.
WE DON'T WANT HALL MONITORING TO TRACK OFFICE ATTENDANCE.
We just want to be treated with respect. That's it.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has signed a bill that includes funding for breakfast at all Pennsylvania public schools.
1.7 million kids in Pennsylvania will now be guaranteed breakfast at school.
Do you work for
@Google
,
@Waymo
,
@sidewalklabs
or any other Alphabet subsidiary?
Join us today!
Not a full time employee? Doesn't matter! This union is for all US workers including temporary, vendor or contract workers.
We can't wait to meet you😊
Today Google informed workers on the YouTube Music team that they would be laid off, hours before a scheduled vote by the Austin City Council on a resolution calling on Google to bargain with these same workers in good faith.
YouTube must no longer be a tool of fascist recruitment and oppression. Anything less is to countenance deadly violence from Gamergate to Charlottesville, from Christchurch to Washington, D.C., from Jair Bolsonaro to Donald Trump.
Google Fiber TVC's in Kansas City recorded their first union-busting meeting.
To no one's surprise, management followed the same tired old playbook by:
☑️ Insinuating workers could lose their jobs if they unionized (then denied it).
☑️ 3rd partied the union.
Listen in below!
Welcome back to Alphabet, Shannon!
Shannon's back at work b/c she had a union to turn to when she was illegally suspended. She came to us, we raised hell, & a week later, she's back.
Alphabet workers, there's strength in numbers. Join us, organize, unionize.
#UnionStrong
"Everyone at Alphabet — from bus drivers to programmers, from salespeople to janitors — plays a critical part in developing our tech. But right now, a few wealthy executives define what the company produces & how its workers are treated."
Together, we're going to change that. ✊
More than 200 Google employees have formed a union. "We joined Alphabet because we wanted to build technology that improves the world. Yet time and again, company leaders have put profits ahead of our concerns," write Parul Koul and Chewy Shaw.
🚨 We just passed 530
#AWU
members 🚨
Our first hundred took a year. We've just increased by three times that in two days.
And this isn't just signing up. It means paying dues, committing to meetings, a structure.
There's appetite for change at Alphabet. This is proof.
We started today with 200+
#AWU
members, the result of more than a year of intense discussions, one-on-one's, & other organizing.
We ended today, our first day as a public group, with over 400 members.
It's the first Monday of 2021. We're going to keep it up this whole year.
Like Starbucks, Chipotle holds itself out as a hip, progressive company & like Starbucks, it's fighting fiercely against unionization, firing pro-union workers & closing the very 1st Chipotle store where workers sought to unionize
My story for
@HellGateNY
The Alphabet Workers Union is concerned by Google’s actions against member Margaret Mitchell. The continued targeting of leaders of the Ethical AI team calls into question Google’s commitment to ethics. Read our full statement:
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is guaranteed lifetime health insurance.
The football players who put their bodies on the line to generate over $10 billion for the league, and often receive traumatic injuries, only get 5 years of insurance after retirement.
“Thousands or millions of people will wake up & see this story & see that you don’t need to wait for the labor board to approve your union. You have a union when you say you have a union.”
A union isn't something the bosses or the gov. gives you. It's yours if you organize.
Today, Google workers announced the formation of a union—engineering a way around the challenges to organizing their gigantic tech company. via
@hamiltonnolan
Our members with YouTube Music have clear strike demands & a powerful vision of a world where everyone has enough.
And we can build that by having a real voice on the job to negotiate the working conditions that shape our lives.
All power to our striking YouTube Music members!
On February 3rd, YouTube Music workers went on an unfair labor practice strike. More than two weeks later, they are still picketing—sometimes even playing music—and protesting what they say is an illegal return-to-work order.
🧵
In one email, Alphabet executives took away the livelihoods of 12,000 of our coworkers.
Workers at every stage of their career were let go with little rationale as to why.
Today we're hosting a meeting open to all Alphabet workers to demand ACCOUNTABILITY. 🧵
Today, we witnessed the incredible
#solidarity
of the
#labor
movement! In the pouring rain,
#unions
& the public came together to show support for our fight. We're making history, and we have the support of millions all over the world.

Tonight, Google began another round of needless layoffs. Our members and teammates work hard every day to build great products for our users, and the company cannot continue to fire our coworkers while making billions every quarter. We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe!
This flight attendant doesn't get paid until the plane door closes, but is required to show up to work 1hr before departure & work on boarding 30 minutes before the plane door closes.
Standing with all AA flight attendants who voted yes on striking because enough is enough.
BREAKING: 26,000 flight attendants at American Airlines just voted to authorize a strike.
These workers haven't gotten a raise since 2019, and with 99% voting yes they're ready to win big.
Pilots at American Airlines just won a 46% raise, now it's flight attendants' turn.
WIN!!
The
@NLRB
just announced they will uphold the Region 16 Director’s previous ruling that our YouTube Music members ARE jointly employed by both
@Google
&
@Cognizant
.
This could be the 1st time
@Google
will be at the bargaining table w/
@AlphabetWorkers
.
Our statement⬇️
Abortion access is a labor issue.
This decision is a direct attack against millions of working people—particularly workers of color as those with resources will continue to access safe abortions.
Today's decision will not stop abortions—it will only criminalize working people.
WORKER VICTORY!
After Google Fiber retail workers won their union election with
@AlphabetWorkers
a worker was told by management that "union members aren't eligible for raises."
We filled a ULP & the company settled—winning the worker back their 4% raise & backpay.
Twitter workers: There's an alternative path to job security and pay increases that doesn't involve laughing at a douchebags jokes.
#UnionStrong
hint hint
Today at Google offices across the country we've held events to bring our coworkers together to discuss the recent layoffs & the need for real democracy in the workplace.
Workers also wrote letters to their former coworkers because they never got to say goodbye in person. 🧵
🚨🚨🚨
We're thrilled. Shannon, a union member, came to us when she was illegally suspended & saw illegal behavior at her data center.
We filed a complaint. Within a week she was reinstated. Now, Google is promising not to interfere w/worker organizing.
And all we want is to build a world where no one faces caste discrimination.
Solidarity with
@aishabbwahab
& all those fighting for a future where EVERYONE is treated fairly.
"I will not choose Google over my partner."
Google execs can decide to move to New Zealand w/their partners to "see how [they] like it," but we're told to be back in the office, even if it means ending relationships—completely unequal & unfair.
MAJOR VICTORY!
Today, the Google workers fired for speaking out about poor working conditions on Google AI & Search products were reinstated WITH back pay.
@AlphabetWorkers
filed a ULP on behalf of workers—organizing for better working conditions to ensure safe AI development.
WGA members at Sesame Workshop are prepared to strike. 🪧
The unit voted UNANIMOUSLY - with 100% participation - to authorize a strike if management does not reach a fair new contract before their current agreement expires this Friday, April 19.
We're at 619 members right now, triple what we started out with a week ago.
That's hundreds of workers across Alphabet united in a cause, paying dues, & invested in a worker structure to negotiate directly with management.
That's power.
This is the exact moment that workers on the
@Youtube
Music team learned they were being laid off by
@Google
- as they were testifying in front of their local Austin city council.
BREAKING: Over 70% of Americans, including 63% of Trump voters, support the writers' strike.
A new poll we commissioned from Blue Rose Research shows overwhelming support for the WGA strike that cuts across race, age, gender, and even political ideology.
That's us, in the New York Times print edition today, where we hope millions of workers across the globe see that even at the most powerful tech company in the world, you can organize with your coworkers.
Union strong, always.
Google has knowingly underpaid contractors across the globe for years.
We're demanding that Google immediately pay back the wages owed to all TVC's and end its two-tiered perma-temp system.
Fair wages for fair work.
Huge, huge organizing effort & victory—4k of our coworkers in Google cafeterias across the country have unionized w/
@UniteHere
over the last few years, a massive accomplishment.
Solidarity to each & every one, especially those unionizing in Atlanta.✊
Starbucks is considering new benefits for workers, AVB offered employment status to contract workers & now Verizon is raising the minimum wage.
These gains are all due to worker organizing. PERIOD.
Google Data Center workers successfully won hazard pay following collective action✊
Over 100 workers at Modis, a Google subcontractor, organized last week to demand that the corporation pay workers the hazard pay they were promised.
And they won!🧵
This is a precedent setting victory not just for ourselves, but also for workers across the country, where tech companies in particular have innovated new ways to deny responsibility for their workers’ livelihoods thru subcontracting, gig work, & other poor employment practices.
Scoop: Google is legally the boss of sub-contracted YouTube workers seeking to unionize, regional labor board director rules, meaning if the union wins the election Google itself would be required to collectively bargain with US workers for the first time
🚨🚨🚨
There's a major story in the NYT today about one of our members & his lawsuit against Google. It's about a literal *cult* w/in Google that dominated his former team.
But it's not just a salacious story, this is really about workers' rights & TVCs.
Friday's layoffs are just another example of why tech's culture of "put your head down and grind" will not save your job.
Alphabet fired everyone from senior workers w/ 10+ years of experience to Nooglers.
Individual performance won't save us—we have to organize.
We stands in support of the historic lawsuit filed by the
@CalDFEH
against
@Cisco
for caste-based discrimination.
This lawsuit marks the first time in U.S. history that any institution is being held accountable for caste-based discrimination.
NEW: Leaked video shows Amazon managers shouting at workers & warning them against signing union cards at an Albany, NY warehouse.
"Stay out of our way," one manager yelled, pounding a table. "I'm up to here with their bullshit."
Workers filed for a union election the next day.
Urs is the Google exec most adamant that workers show up in the office when he himself was chilling in a mansion in NZ. Same guy pushed workers to help put AI into US drone strikes.
Now he's talking about buying & selling people...
How do bros like this keep their jobs?
Google execs to workers:
You won't be getting a raise.
Google execs to themselves:
Let's give ourselves a massive raise. Times are hard right now. We want to make sure we have enough for those 1st class flights, new cars, holiday homes, ski trips, private schools, etc.
A week ago, Google took the livelihoods of 12,000 of our friends and coworkers.
In response, our members rose up, allied with our fellow Googlers and took action.
On Monday, after the Google Town Hall, we held a worker-led meeting joined by 1000 Googlers.
Read this thread to understand why we're using this approach to unionizing:
—Allowing TVCs (temps, vendors, & contractors) was non-negotiable, we felt very strongly about this
—Getting to the 100k+ workforce takes time
—We can negotiate on more than just wages & conditions
For Google's workers, there are some big advantages to forming a non-contract union. A big one: the NLRB allows only employees to be in traditional unions. The
@AlphabetWorkers
Union can also include independent contractors, temps & subcontracted workers.
We've intentionally done this slowly, bringing people into the fold one by one, building a strong base to pressure Alphabet collectively.
"We're not going to get to 100,000 workers in a way that's sustainable & effective, & without getting totally squashed."
Workers are being laid off right before the holidays while executives are calculating their end of year bonuses.
The tech industry has never made it more clear that EVERY worker needs a union.
Looking to unionize your workplace? DM us today.
Tech companies this month:
1. Twitter - Laying off 75% of employees
2. Apple - Hiring freeze
3. Amazon: Hiring freeze
4. Snapchat: Laying off 20% of employees
5. Meta: Laying off “thousands” this week
6. Microsoft: Layoffs have begun
7. Intel: Laying off 20% of employees
🔥Today is our 1 year anniversary!🔥
We are so incredibly proud of all the work that we've done in 2021 & thankful to the generations of workers around the globe who have come before us.🌎✊
2021 has been a busy year for worker organizing at Google & worker power is growing. ⬇️
For years, office tech workers were told that we were different from other workers, that we didn't need to organize to secure our jobs or win equitable pay.
The truth is, every worker needs a union.
#TwitterLayoffs
The culture of retaliation is why a lot of us got involved in this. Firing the "Thanksgiving four" & most recently
@timnitGebru
made us feel dejected & powerless.
A union will help.
“We want to have a counterforce to protect workers who are speaking up."
"Instead of pouring resources into the very workers that drive the company, particularly those exploited by Alphabet’s two tiered employment system, Google is engaging w. a co. that violates the privacy of workers while pretending to welcome open discourse."
This is why a union.
SUCCESS! For 3 years, Google contractor
@G4S
continued to deadname Phares Lee.
Following a pressure campaign, Phares is being issued a new name badge with his chosen name.
This is an important step in the ongoing struggle for TVC access to Google's chosen name policy and ERGs.
Google workers in Japan now have a union. 50 members signed up already. They are officially launching at a press conference in Tokyo tomorrow.
Tokyo was Google's first international office and it's a crucial market for Google's revenue in Asia Pacific.
Alphabet has $110B in cash reserves, it spent $70B on stock bybacks last year, it made $17B in profits last quarter—yet in the face of this wealth Google chose to fire 12,000 workers.
Google must take immediate action to:
1⃣Add caste to all of its HR policies in all locations.
2⃣Reinstating Thenmozhi's talk at Google News, and agree to a continued commitment to bringing in Dalit and caste-oppressed speakers to address caste discrimination.
We know that social media has emboldened the fascist movement growing in the United States and we are particularly cognizant that YouTube, an Alphabet product, has played a key role in this growing threat, which has received an insufficient response by YouTube executives.
Thousands of workers work exclusively on Google/Alphabet projects—but they are denied the quality wages & benefits they should earn as Google hides behind contracting companies.
It's time for EVERY Google/Alphabet worker to get their fair share.
🧵: Whether two or more employers are deemed “joint employers” by the NLRB can make a huge difference for workers exercising their rights to engage in protected activity such as strikes and picketing, and to bargain collectively with those who control their working conditions.
[The boss is not our friend example 4,335,812.]
"Notes described another employee as a "follower," "impressionable," "a single mother," adding that their "rent [had] increased" and they couldn't "afford [union] dues" and "will do whatever friends do."
This “relocation” benefit does not apply to Google TVC’s who are more likely to live in states with restricted abortion access & are also paid much less then full time employees.
The NLBR has ruled Amazon illegally fired the heads of
@AMZNforClimate
after they spoke up about climate impacts. (!!!)
They made the same ruling against Google in the last few months.
Tech workers notching labor victories.
Alex Hanna, formerly of the Ethical AI team, speaking next about how workers have demonstrated against military contracts before & should do so again.
“There should be no tech for war, no tech for apartheid.”
Since 2019 Google has claimed a new "benchmark" of benefits for TVC's—including $15/hr.
Yet hundreds of workers get paid as little as $10/hr.
Why?
Because Google loopholes keep hundreds of TVC workers from accessing the stated benchmark of benefits.
