Texas Republicans are trying to force public schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom.
I told the bill author: “This bill is not only un-constitutional and un-American, it’s deeply un-Christian.”

3 years ago I almost slipped into a coma and died. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
I paid $684 for my first 30-day supply of insulin. Some pay $1000+ a month. Many die without it.
Today I introduced legislation to cap the price of insulin at $50 a month.

I’m going viral in Brazil right now...
Apparently “talarico” is Brazilian slang for “wife-stealer.” 😂
Olá, Brazil! 🇧🇷 I’m just making good public policy here in Texas — I promise I won’t steal your girl.
UPDATE: Thousands of Texans called their local school boards demanding they say NO to school chaplains—and it worked.
The 25 largest school districts in Texas all rejected replacing counselors with chaplains.
This is a big win in the fight against Christian Nationalism.
Texas Republicans passed legislation to replace school counselors with untrained religious chaplains.
But you can stop them at the local level.
Tell your school board to say NO to chaplains in our public schools.
My Democratic colleagues and I are leaving the state to break quorum and kill the Texas voter suppression bill.
We’re flying to DC to demand Congress pass the For The People Act and save our democracy.
Good trouble.

Today I killed HB 3979—the bill that attempted to teach our students a whitewashed version of American history—with a Point of Order.
If kids are old enough to experience racism, then they're old enough to learn about it.

"Republican" leadership allowed a progressive liberal to open the day with this "prayer."
I am disgusted such blasphemy was spoken in the chamber. Lord forgive us for turning our state over to this trash. Where are the bold followers of Jesus Christ?
Last year Republicans tried to gerrymander me out of the House.
Last week the people re-elected me to a third term.
Today I filed my first bill of the new session: a ban on partisan gerrymandering.
My Democratic colleagues and I just walked out of the House chamber.
We broke quorum to kill SB 7, the Texas voter suppression bill.
Good trouble. Necessary trouble.

Christian Nationalism is perverting my faith and subverting our democracy.
It’s incumbent upon Christians to call out this dangerous ideology.
That’s why I spoke at my home church about the threat of Christian Nationalism.
A month ago, we broke quorum to kill the Texas voter suppression bill.
A week ago, Gov. Abbott defunded the entire legislative branch in retaliation.
Today, we’re suing Abbott in the Texas Supreme Court.
Texas is the frontline in the fight for democracy.

This is how we take back Texas.
We did it.
We just defeated Greg Abbott's voucher scam.
The People’s House has spoken. I’m so proud of the bipartisan coalition in the Texas House that defended our schools and our kids.
The Texas voter suppression bill is on the House floor today.
My Democratic colleagues and I have more than 100 amendments. We’re prepared to fight this all night.
Good trouble. Necessary trouble.

Some history:
The slang term comes from this song by Brazilian singer-songwriter Zeca Pagodinho about a man named Talarico who stole his wife. It’s a banger.

Texas is experiencing a humanitarian crisis.
People are burning furniture to heat their homes, melting snow to flush their toilets, risking carbon monoxide poisoning to protect their children.
If Texas was a country, we would call it a “failed state.”

These pictures were taken at Cornerstone Christian School, where tuition is $27,000.
Abbott’s voucher is only $8,000 — not enough for working families to get a “choice” but enough for rich families at Cornerstone to get a 30% discount.
Vouchers are welfare for the wealthy.
The midnight bill deadline has passed!!
We stopped the Ten Commandments bill from becoming law.
I’m so proud of Texas Democrats for sticking together and stopping this dangerous legislation.

Texas Republicans passed a bill to ban “preferential treatment based on race” at state universities.
But they voted against my amendment to ban preferential treatment for kids of legislators.
They're against affirmative action unless it benefits the wealthy and well-connected.
BREAKING: Greg Abbott's special session just ended and he failed to pass his voucher scam — AGAIN.
I’m proud of the bipartisan majority that stood up to the governor & his billionaire mega-donors.
Abbott can call as many sessions as he wants, but we'll never sell out our kids.
“I’ve been given 5 minutes to speak to my party. So I want to talk about hard truths.
The Democratic Party is the only thing standing between this country and fascism.
Yet the most our national party leaders can muster is spineless talking points & soulless fundraising emails.”
Greg Abbott's voucher scam would divert taxpayer dollars out of public schools and into private schools.
But private schools aren't accountable to taxpayers—no transparency, no oversight, no standards.
Watch how they struggle to answer my basic questions about accountability…
Three days after the Allen massacre, Texas Republicans just loosened gun regulations.

Greg Abbott and his billionaire mega-donors know private school vouchers are unpopular in Texas.
So they’ve paid for a bunch of poll-tested slogans to sell their scam.
Here’s how to debunk each slogan in 1 minute…

Greg Abbott is investigating them because they have a trans child.
Beto O’Rourke stopped by their house on Mother’s Day, brought flowers, cooked dinner, and did the dishes.
This is what a real Texan looks like.
Vouchers don’t help poor kids — they just help rich parents who already send their kids to private school.
I asked if Greg Abbott’s voucher scam would give $80,000 to wealthy CEOs.
The answer was YES.

I was born to a single mom who worked long hours at a hotel.

Two billionaire mega-donors are trying to dismantle public education in Texas.

@GregAbbott_TX
had “a scheduling conflict” but thousands of Texans showed up to stand with them.
Ni uno más. Not one more.
A billionaire mega-donor just gave Greg Abbott $6 MILLION to keep pushing private school voucher scams.
This is the largest bribe in the history of Texas politics.
Greg Abbott doesn’t work for the people of Texas — he works for his billionaire bosses.
Texas Republicans are banning books in school libraries across our state.
Today we’re staging a “read-in” in the Texas Capitol to protest this censorship.
@GregAbbott_TX
: you can borrow my copy of Fahrenheit 451.
Meet Tim Dunn & Farris Wilks—two billionaires from West Texas.
They bought Paxton’s acquittal for $3 million. Now they’re pushing a private school voucher scam.
Their ultimate goal is even more ambitious: transforming Texas into an authoritarian, Christian Nationalist state. 🧵
“We just defeated Greg Abbott’s voucher scam.
If it wasn’t clear already, Texans don’t want a voucher scam. They want us to fully fund our neighborhood schools.
We call on the Governor to finally support a clean school finance bill.”
Greg Abbott is the reverse Robin Hood — he steals from the poor to give to the rich.
His voucher scam will bankrupt public schools to help rich parents pay for private school.
Vouchers are welfare for the wealthy.

The antidote to despair is action. Let’s get to work.
Greg Abbott is trying to defund our schools with a private school voucher scam.
Not on our watch.
Today I joined my colleagues to introduce the Fully Fund our Future Act which will invest in ALL students and give every teacher a $15,000 raise.

Greg Abbott has called a FOURTH special session to pass his voucher scam.
He’s doing the bidding of two billionaire mega donors — Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks — who want to dismantle public education.
Watch what happened when I called them out in committee…
My first job in high school was at our local public library.
The Texas Library Association honored my efforts to stop book banning — in the same library where I used to work.
I will always defend our freedom to read.
The bill author says she’s a champion of “parental rights.” So I asked her if state-sponsored religious indoctrination violates the rights of parents.
This was her response.
Last summer, news broke that Greg Abbott ordered state troopers on the border to “push small children back into the Rio Grande.”
I passed an amendment to ban this inhumane practice.
Tonight, Texas Republicans REMOVED that amendment — and they couldn’t even tell me why.
“Betsy DeVos said she’s pushing voucher scams to advance God’s kingdom.
But there’s nothing Christian about taking money from poor kids & giving it to rich kids on the other side of town.
These Christian Nationalist billionaires should close their wallets & open their bibles.”
“Republican politicians are banning books in the name of protecting children.
Republican politicians are banning drag queens in the name of protecting children.
But they won’t lift a finger to address the leading cause of death for children in the United States: gun violence.”
Equality feels blasphemous when you’ve been taught a religion of supremacy.
Freedom feels blasphemous when you’ve been taught a religion of control.
Peace feels blasphemous when you’ve been taught a religion of violence.
The true blasphemy is using the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth to exclude others.
Christianity is a way of living in radical fellowship; it’s not a members-only club.
Christ taught love not rules.
In fact, he broke rules.
Today is Palm Sunday. Jesus rode a donkey into the seat of religious/political/economic power and offended the entire establishment.
This Holy Week, let’s follow in his footsteps by loving our neighbors more than our dogmas.
Greg Abbott took money from juvenile justice facilities to fund his border stunts.
Now kids are locked in windowless cells for 23 hours a day and peeing in water bottles.
I’m demanding
@GregAbbott_TX
call a special session to fix this. We need a governor, not a stuntman.
Greg Abbott talks a big game about helping students and parents.
But after four special sessions, he’s given our schools $0.
This has never been about helping kids — it’s always been about destroying public education.
This guy drove 600 miles to the State Capitol from El Paso to testify against the voter suppression bill.
He spent the whole day supporting grassroots organizers, strategizing with elected officials, and defending our right to vote.

“This gives us religious people a bad name.
Instead of living out the way of Jesus, we’re imposing our beliefs on other people.
Instead of leading by example, we’re leading by mandates.
I find this to be a deeply offensive bill.”
When I was a public school teacher, I struggled to make ends meet.
40% of Texas teachers work a second job. Thousands are leaving the profession to find work that can pay the bills.
Today I’m introducing legislation to give every teacher in Texas a $15,000 pay raise.

Pre-k is the most important grade.
But Texas has no limits on prekindergarten class size. Some classes have 30+ kids.
I just passed legislation to limit the size of pre-k classes to 22 students in Texas.

Last thing: I’m typically conflict avoidant. I try to resolve conflicts with colleagues before we get to the floor.
But as a former teacher who taught black & brown children, I found this bill to be personally offensive.
Our teachers & our students deserve better than HB 3979.
I’m home!
Our quorum break shined a national spotlight on the TX voter suppression bill and pushed Congress closer to passing a federal voting rights act to override it. I’m confident they will.
Now I’m back to clean up Greg Abbott’s latest messes from COVID to ERCOT.

“Do you believe schools are for education, not indoctrination?
Why is having a rainbow in a classroom considered indoctrination, but the Ten Commandments is not?”
My colleagues and I didn’t make this decision lightly.
Breaking quorum is only used for the most egregious abuses of power.
We can debate issues, but we won’t debate democracy itself.
Tom Green County hasn’t voted for a Democrat since LBJ.
But I just spoke to a room full of Tom Green Democrats — and they’re FIRED UP.
This is how we take back Texas.
In Texas, minors who are convicted as adults don’t get an education in prison.
But that’s about to change—the House just passed my bill to give every incarcerated minor a full high school education.

I’m proud to endorse this diverse and hopeful collection of thoughtful, empathetic, and highly qualified Democrats. If you’re in one of their districts or states, make sure you vote for them this fall. And if you can, vote early—by mail or in person.
BREAKING: A Trump-appointed federal judge just blocked Texas Republicans’ book banning bill.
He called it an “unconstitutional law” that “could lead to banning classic works of literature.”
This is a big win — for our students, our librarians, and our freedoms.
#txlege
And here’s the moment we called the Point of Order—a procedural maneuver—that killed HB 3979.
As of now, the bill is effectively dead, but my colleagues and I are remaining vigilant in case there are efforts to revive it.
“If our First Amendment is forbidding the state from establishing a state religion, then mandating that one tradition be elevated above the rest would be a violation of the First Amendment.”
I filed legislation to pay every teacher $70k, but maybe we should pay them like babysitters:
$15 per kid x 22 kids per class x 6 hours per day x 180 days per year =
$356,400 annual salary
Even with health insurance, I paid $684 for my first 30-day supply of insulin—the medicine I need to live. I had to put it on a credit card.
Now that I’m a legislator, I have excellent state health insurance to cover my insulin.
Every Texan should be entitled to the same.
Last year, I passed a bill to give incarcerated minors the chance to earn a high school diploma.
Lonnie just became the first student to graduate under our legislation. Joined by his proud aunt and (even prouder) mom!

I’m calling for your resignation because I’m a human being.
Just landed in Memphis on our way to DC. Thank y’all for your well wishes.
We left behind our families, our livelihoods, & our beloved Texas. But our sacrifice is nothing compared to the sacrifices brave Americans have made throughout history to protect the sacred right to vote.
“The 2nd Commandment is meant to prevent the creation of idols.
The idea is that some people would try to make an object—maybe 2 tablets—to worship rather than worshiping the God behind those two tablets.
Are you worried that this bill is idolatrous?”
We’re prepared to stay out of Texas for the rest of the session.
This decision wasn’t easy. Many of my colleagues left kids, elderly parents, & sick loved ones. Many are risking their day jobs & their seats in the House.
But we won’t sit by & watch democracy wither on the vine.
This year, the world saw the worst from Texas.
❌ Extreme abortion bans
❌ Ken Paxton’s acquittal
❌ Private school voucher scams
And all of it can be traced back to two billionaires from West Texas…
Red states—from Kansas to Kentucky—have voted to protect abortion access.
Today, I filed a bill to put abortion on the ballot in Texas.
Let the people decide.
