In many areas of science prediction is followed by experimental confirmation, - e.g., physics. All models are wrong, some are useful; their usefulness evolves. The hype is real, but trying to maintain a chasm between experiment and theory is not only futile but not constructive🤷🏻‍♀️
@gonenlab
Tamir Gonen 🎗️

"Determined" and "solved" are words reserved for experiments, not to predictions. They predicted structures. But predictions shouldn't be taken as facts. Too many fields of science suffered and still do by wrong predictions and computer simulations

Also, we decided ‘gp105’ was a confusing name (for this phage , gp53 encodes for…gp105? 🤦) Instead, we propose ‘chimallin’ (from chimalli - meaning shield). So gp105 -> chimallinA (ChmA) and the to be ID components ChmB, ChmC, etc. 16/n

This is true, alas not only in the US. It’s lack of empathy - most people have never been immigrants and they don’t get how what they perceive as small issues cause severe anxiety and impact life quality. But as with many issues, ignorance is not an excuse. Must do better.

Last year, my final coincided with #purim , so we started a tradition in which the TAs for my Cell Bio class and I would dress up during the final. This year, we kept the tradition by answering questions on #zoom ! Thanks everyone for a wonderful quarter! #cellbiologyrules

Amazing ventilation yesterday at #JF80 all day, both in the auditorium and in the coffee break/lunch room. CO2 levels w/Aranet4. Left my hotel room, right taxi ride (!) end of day. Those levels are very good. Kudos to the organizers on wonderful science and a safe environment!

It has it all: a nucleus that separates transcription and translation and that imports and exports proteins and mRNA, and filaments that treadmill to transport the #viralcapsids into the nucleus. Watch the fantastic movie by the great @janetiwasa

Every year, I witness students struggling to get committee meetings scheduled. It became easier in the last 2 years, but it's back to the old unnecessary routine of sending polls, not hearing back, starting again. There should be an easy way for faculty to enter availability 1/2

This👇should show you that you can do anything without a #GRFP ! And also, for international students who don’t even get to apply to this and the vast majority of grad fellowships: I 👀 you, and you can do amazing things regardless!

Congrats to all those getting the @NSF #GRFP this year! And to all the many other talented, deserving scientists who didn’t get it- the rejection stings. I should know, I was turned down for it both times I applied! Take time to process it, and move forward stronger!

Agree completely! Money alone does not make the dream science location I visited this week. The future is very bright for Italian science - creativity, high end research, interesting and kind people. Technopole should be a template for future investment.

1/ In only few years Human Technopole @humantechnopole has grown to become an internationally highly competitive research institution. Attributing its success solely to its core funding is incorrect. Support it necessary but insufficient for success.

Please see this 👇👇👇 There are many instances in which reviewers use inappropriate metrics to review proposals (tbf, sometimes inadvertently). You should contact the SRO and PO. True also for junior PIs (and even senior, but most irritating for trainees).
