, I want to share a story about an amazing friend I met at AGH a few years ago. Faith worked in sterile processing. I’m a medicine doc. Normally our paths wouldn’t cross, but Faith is a tall woman with the most welcoming smile & is hard to miss

I can’t say that being the PD of a large IM program is easy. I have a great team & the resources I need, but many nights are long, and the lows can be LOW
Yet I can’t imagine a more fulfilling role in medicine. The blessings & relationships will carry me forever
#InMyFeelings
41 calls to our incoming interns ✅☺️ WhatsApp came through👌🏻 Time zones from California to Nebraska, NY, to Turkey, India, Pakistan, to right back in Pittsburgh 🌏🌍🌎. There are no boundaries when you’re seeking the future of medicine
@AHNIMres
#ProudPD
Took longer than usual, but able to connect with all 41 incoming residents by phone 🤩☎️🌎🌍🌏
Zoom for interviews is great, a phone call just feels a bit more personal. Went from:
PA➡️SC➡️FLA➡️CA➡️CT➡️MA➡️ WA➡️WV➡️VA➡️OH➡️NY➡️🇮🇳➡️🇵🇰➡️🇯🇵➡️🏴
Recruitment now ✅

I was incredibly embarrassed when I decided to pursue medicine and a doctor asked me what I wanted to do. I replied I wasn’t sure. He asked, “well, medicine or surgery?” And that was the day I found out that they’re different
@nickmmark
As an internist and PCP, challenging to imagine a scenario where this combination of meds would be appropriate for the individualized general care of a population of staffers if following sound diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines, even if exclusively dealing with shift workers
My former PD, who recruited my wife and I hundreds of miles from home, to this program we love, and where I now get to serve as PD, had this hanging in his office, and was part of his program welcome. He is retiring, and left it outside my door today 😭

41 ☎️ to our PGYnext
Boston 🇺🇸 to Bangalore 🇮🇳 to Brampton 🇨🇦, Andover to Australia 🇦🇺 (ironically not the Australian, he was in Miami), Pittsburgh to Pakistan🇵🇰, Kathmandu🇳🇵to Kenya 🇰🇪, Yakima to Youngstown
We are stronger together 🌎🌍🌏
Truly one of the best feelings as a PD is hearing back from graduates that have gone on to fellowships and practice about how well prepared they are for every scenario, and the positive feedback they’ve gotten in their new homes

@NAChristakis
IMHO, seems
@DrIbram
states that adoption does not preclude racism: was even practiced in colonization. If I read
@DrIbram
correctly, anti-racism is never bestowed. He does not conclude it IS racism, but rather that the post draws a premature conclusion
On this day, 15 years and 3 wonderful children later, with this beautiful woman, I learned that what intrigued her about me is that I was Canadian 🇨🇦 and that was “exotic” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Here’s me, wife, and fellow 🇨🇦 PGY1 on July 1 (we are showing 1, not the middle finger)
Congratualtions to all the residents starting
@AHNIMres
, newly minted seniors, super-seniors, and all our grads who started fellowship or jobs. You’re on a worthwhile journey
We romanticize our largest academic centers, when it’s our community hospitals that often show the most heart to their patients and staff

The
#Match
can make for a wild journey, but 6 cycles in as a PD, and feel really blessed that the love we have put into it has come right back to us. Welcome to our categorical and preliminary residents!
@Medical_Niyi
It’s your truth. As a PGY1 I made more than my parents, combined. It positively changed all of our lives. More would have been better, and I advocated for that, but it didn’t undo the excitement of accomplishing that for us. You deserve to be pumped
With interviews well on their way, and
#Match2024
around the corner, re-sharing this memory I’m proud to have. This was my interview for residency
@AHNIMres
. It’s more than a job
#AlleghenyMade
Recruitment time is also heavy reflection time for me. Throwback photo from by first year as PD. Some real ones here. Looking forward to resuming our PGY-specific chats to aid continuous program improvement

Want to thank this crew from
@AHNIMres
and
@DrexelMedicine
for inviting me to play 🏀 tonight. Jumper fell apart when I wasn’t just standing in the driveway, but had a great time, and not a bad run for having 14+ years on the next closest player 👴🏻.

Missed the match party…and the BIG pizza! Still took the photo op 😁Congratulations to all the residents who matched today!
For the disappointed, what today feels like your whole story, will soon be a chapter, then a line, and ultimately a footnote in an incredible career
Proud of all of our residents, including those rising as Chiefs, those staying
@AHNtoday
or going elsewhere to pursue GIM, and those that worked tirelessly to achieve their subspecialty ambitions, bravo! 💚💙
Excited to share our fellowship results! 🎊 🥳 Congratulations to our 🌟 residents who put in countless hours to achieve this next step in their careers, the mentors that helped them along the way, and the programs near and far who have welcomed them! Prepare to be impressed!💪
Late to this clip, but WOW!

Shutting down the department for the night. Still some calls to make and some tweets to send but gotta do that from home. Happy match day everyone, especially to our phenomenal

crew!

Personal news-Volunteered to help coach grade 4 soccer (I only recently started watching, and never played). 1st practice and head coach was out. More nervous than giving grand rounds for 250 docs 😳 Hearing “hey coach” was surreal, and proud I took on a new challenge though ⚽️

Inevitably a patient will be diagnosed with a malignancy you didn’t anticipate and was found by someone else
It will suck. Remember that the retrospectoscope is a flawed tool though; the window you now see, likely wasn’t open then

Excited to have our new residents in the building!
Nothing says welcome like your PD’s face illuminated in red by the exit sign. I promise I’m normal 🤦🏼♂️
This displays the delayed relaxation phase nicely. If you only watch for the initial reflex, it will look pretty normal and can be missed. If truly hyporeflexic, consider other causes 👌🏻
Since folks seem to like the food picks this time of year. This is my Greek comfort food ahead of the holiday. Correct plate ratios right?25% Lamb 25% Horiatiki 25% Lemon Potatoes 25% Tzatziki 😂
I hope this goes without saying, but if you’re a resident affiliated with
@AHNIMres
, if you don’t have your PPE there might as well be a brick wall in front of the door
The mortality for in-hospital COVID codes is dismal because of the disease >> delays

🪫🔋Recharged after a surprise visit from my former coordinator, the legendary
#PattiBarr
. Patti saw me go from intern to PD.
Even when we didn’t have much
@AHNIMres
, having great colleagues like this was enough
This time of year I’m often asked how our residents have been so successful?
My answer:
“When the stakes are high, they compete together, not with each other”

Special night with our incoming PGY1s, some of our seniors, faculty, and team “the bond before the storm” on the longest day of the year 😎
@AHNIMres
PGY1s are hitting their stride in month 7. They have seen a breadth of medicine to this point and gaining independence. Career paths are taking shape. It’s a special time

Grind of a PGY1 meeting reflecting on intern year, but time well invested to gain perspective
At the end of the day, love is posting my worst photo, because it was their best 🙃
Yesterday I felt a pop in my calf while racing with the kids. 4 year old checked me with, oto & ophthalmoscope etc
Today at pickup she gave me this card 🥰
I asked if those were her classmates, she said, “No daddy! Those are your residents!” 😢😌

What a day, what a class. Thank you for the years, tears, and wonderful memories. It has been an absolute blessing. I especially enjoyed meeting everyone’s support systems, our people’s people ✊🏻

Just in from our first all out program event since Feb 2019. I’ve been impressed with this gen of residents. They’re a quick study, appreciate the finer things from my generation, socially conscious, understand NFTs and bitcoin and I learned tonight, they also know how to party👊🏻
Proud to see two of our rockstar
@AHNIMres
graduates bringing their talents to their fellowships in Cleveland. You’re in good hands at CCF with these two 😊
1/ Spent the week rounding at our sister campus for the first time. Reminded me how each community is unique, and incredible. I also got to work with our residents more closely than usual, and see them in an environment where they each work at the next level up 🧵
I should share that the foundation of my promotions packet wasn’t a litany of papers, but rather real-world QI and tenacious transformation in DEI. Appreciate
@DrexelMedicine
for recognizing those contributions as valuable as papers. It should be this way too
The
