The video from this weekend in Ocean City is deeply disturbing. Vaping on the Boardwalk is not a criminal offense. Black and brown children should not be tased while their hands are up. Officers should not kneel on the back of a minor. Vaping should not yield a hog tie.
Maryland is leading the country in transforming our broken policing system. I am proud to lead the House in overriding each of the governor’s police reform vetoes.(1/3)
Modernizing our infrastructure takes partnership at every level of government. I was proud to stand with
@SecretaryPete
,
@MayorBMScott

@ChrisVanHollen
and my colleagues in state and local government to announce the $22M RAISE grant…
Gov., we’ve been working with you for weeks. You’re well aware that we’re working to complete the budget & other important legislation.
Please don’t degrade our collaborative work to Twitter bombs in this time of uncertainty. Let’s continue to work together for all MDers.
With Maryland in a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the legislature’s sole focus should be those measures immediately necessary to protect the public health and safety of Marylanders. The General Assembly must take these three actions no later than Tuesday:
Each of these actions is why the Maryland General Assembly passed police reform this year. I urge Ocean City officials to make review of this incident a top priority, dismiss the overzealous charges against this young man and reform or retrain officers on use of force immediately
The right to make decisions about one’s body should never be up for debate. Today, we took a huge step in guaranteeing that’s the case in MD. Proud to reintroduce my constitutional amend. to affirm reproductive freedom in Maryland & ensure our rights are never a bargaining chip.
It is the honor of a lifetime to be elected Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. I pledge to uphold my oath of office and faithfully serve everyone who calls Maryland home.

Today I was honored to have a reproduction of renowned Maryland African American artist, Simmie Knox’s extraordinary painting of Frederick Douglass installed as the first work of art in my office.
SBE’s website doesn’t make it easy to request your mail-in ballot online. I made this video to show you step-by-step how to make your request. Take time to request your ballot.
I urge SBE to streamline this process so voters won’t need a tutorial video to exercise their right.
Now, for the first time in our nation's history, the rights of officers will not be held above the rights of individuals, and policing in Maryland will be transparent and citizen-centered. (2/3)
Prior to Brown v. Board, my aunt, Margaret W. Rose, was denied the opportunity to attend high school in Baltimore Co. Thurgood Marshall took her case and represented our family in Williams v. Zimmerman, laying the foundation to the historic Board decision.
Another historic night in Annapolis! Tonight, we revealed the statues of Harriet Tubman & Frederick Douglass inside the Old House Chamber. Now, when visitors come to the State House, they’ll remember the heroism and courage of our two most influential Marylanders.
If Black Marylanders again face disproportionately long lines in November, I will be forced to look at systemic and wide ranging reforms to the structure, appointments and function of both the state & local boards of elections. They better figure it out.
This session was unlike any other. We championed causes, passed meaningful policy across the political spectrum and today, are signing 66 bills into law. It will go down as one of the most consequential sessions of the last 20 years.
The Governor’s misguided rhetoric of "refund the police” is beneath him and the dignity of his office. His attempt to politicize the critical work that the legislature has already done to have more transparent and inclusive law enforcement does nothing to move our State forward
I am thrilled to see Vice President Biden choose Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate. Black women are the backbone of our party and our country and I believe this is the winning ticket we need to defeat Trump.
Statement from Speaker Adrienne A. Jones
“These are the highest levels of positivity we have seen during the pandemic. Our hospitals have reached crisis levels and yet, Governor Hogan has not taken decisive action to stop the spread.
Between now and January the Maryland House of Delegates will look at every option to curb the proliferation of guns on the street. As the Highland Park and Philadelphia shootings have shown us – more guns do not make us safer.
The Maryland General Assembly is showing the nation exactly where we stand as a state - fair treatment for every person, regardless of their race, background or zip code and stronger relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. (3/3)
I couldn’t agree more
@WhoopiGoldberg
! The Maryland House of Delegates began our effort to reform policing almost a year ago. Now that we’ve passed strong, comprehensive police reform bills, I hope we can serve as a model and have more states follow our lead.

was a national treasure and a selfless leader who exemplified what public service meant. Elijah always fought for the little guy, working across the aisle on health care issues, prescription drugs & the importance of education as a way to open doors for every child,
While other states are restricting abortion access, today, Maryland passed a bill to put a constitutional amendment for reproductive freedom on the ballot.
Until there's federal legislation protecting abortion access, Maryland will be a safe haven for reproductive freedom.
Twelve states have criminalized abortion since Roe was overturned and more will likely follow. That's why I'm co-sponsoring the Women's Health Protection Act: to protect abortion access nationwide, despite the Supreme Court’s reckless decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

After hours of research, bill draftings, hearings, & a fiercely fought floor debate, we finally did it! The House voted to pass
#TheBlueprint4MD
so every child has a chance to succeed. Thanks to the members & staff for your commitment to creating a world-class education system.
Organized labor built the middle class and continues to be a pillar in communities across Maryland today. Thank you for all the sacrifices you have made during this pandemic to keep the state moving. Happy Labor Day.
This is historic - the

passes!
Our most important duty as legislators is to leave a brighter future for our students. Tonight, we voted to uphold our commitment to our children.
Thank you

for putting Maryland’s children first!

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of my friend, colleague and trusted advisor Senator Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Mike Miller was a giant and a legend who served the people of Maryland for nearly a half century.
I want to thank the State House Trust for this important vote today to remove this confederate-sympathizing plaque. We have made great strides to reflect the importance of African-Americans in our State’s history over the past year (1/2)

@SpeakerPelosi
has been a model of superior leadership, a trailblazer who made the way for the few women across the country who are called “Madam Speaker” and a stronghold for a tested democracy. Expect nothing less from a daughter of Baltimore. Thank you, Madam Speaker.
Today is a new day for Maryland's historically black colleges and universities. For over a decade, we have left our higher education system in limbo while we litigated the program duplication issues surrounding Maryland’s

That ends the work at the desk. The House has adjourned Sine Die, the 2022 Legislative Session has come to an end and for the first time in two years, we’ve ended the session celebrating the work we’ve done for the people of Maryland.
Today I was joined by
@SpeakerAJones
and
@SenBillFerg
to enact the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Protection Act of 2020, which supports our ongoing actions to combat COVID-19 and protects Marylanders from the economic hardships that may result from this pandemic.
Congratulations to Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller.
This is a historic moment for Maryland. Today’s inauguration demonstrates that Marylanders are ready to embrace a new path forward with the most diverse leadership of any state in the country.
It’s time we pass the
#Blueprint4MD
to create a world-class education system in Maryland. We can’t be satisfied as policy makers until every child in every zip code has the chance to succeed.
To better prepare MD for the COVID-19 outbreak, I’m introducing an emergency bill to help protect our residents.
HB1663 helps prevent price gouging, cost sharing, employee firing & allows for other preventative measures to ensure the health & security of all MDers
#Working4MD
Dr. Freeman Hrabowski has embodied what we all want higher education to be in MD: visionary, exciting, cutting-edge, motivating, and life-changing. He has made
@UMBC
into a national leader when many thought it couldn’t be done.
It is a dark day for our country. The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will put women’s lives in jeopardy across America. Here in Maryland, access to the full range of reproductive health services will not be limited by this decision.
Tonight, we stand with the brave men and women on the frontlines fighting for their county. We stand with the hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the country to protect their families. We stand with Ukrainian Marylanders across the state. Tonight, we stand with Ukraine.
Governor Hogan has portrayed himself as being above politics. But what he says to the residents of Maryland is vastly different from what he says to President Trump when he thinks no one back home is listening. (1/3)
The “Maryland Remembers” Civil War plaque honors Confederate soldiers and is not a symbol that belongs in our seat of government. This plaque has no place in the State House.
Former first lady
@MichelleObama
represents the best of what our country has to offer. She is right, we need leaders with empathy — not just in the White House, but at every level of government.

On this day, 53 years ago, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives paving the way for women of color everywhere. Because of her we can.

I'm proud to officially announce HB1: The Built to Learn Act - which will provide an additional $2.2 B for school construction & renovation projects across MD
Every child deserves the best education possible - regardless of their zip code
#Working4MD
I am extremely disappointed with the Governor’s actions today. While we are in the midst of a public health and economic crisis of an extraordinary magnitude, stopping progress on education and school construction puts us even further behind.
It is the honor of my lifetime to be elected Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates.
On this 1st day of the 2024 Session, I know we have much work ahead of us. I'm confident in my 140 colleagues, who share my love of public service, and I know we’ll have a great Session.
Last night, I was inducted into the MD Women’s Hall of Fame alongside incredible women leaders
@SpeakerPelosi

@BrookeELierman
& 5 outstanding high school future leaders of MD.
It is an honor to be included in such exceptional company.
Today, we stood together to sign the RELIEF Act making it the law. Next, we will pass legislation to include every Maryland tax payer in the Earned Income tax Credit, and send it to the governor’s desk.
Today’s events in Washington have made it clear that it is, in fact, our democracy that is at stake. The violence, rioting and assault on our nation’s Capitol is nothing less than sedition.
One of the most dangerous gaps in MD’s gun laws is the loophole in our background check process that allows private long gun sales to go unregulated. I’m standing with my colleagues &
@MomsDemand
to announce our plans to close this loophole & improve gun safety across the state.
We all stand behind the basic principle that every child deserves the best education possible - regardless of their zip code.
The Built to Learn Act will finally give counties across Maryland an opportunity to make building improvements that are long overdue.
#Working4MD
I made re-evaluating home appraisals part of my Black Agenda because housing discrimination needs to end in Maryland. We'll continue to work until we get it right.
Now, we are learning they’ve mishandled the vaccination of over a thousand Marylanders and refused to notify them in a timely manner. Governor Hogan needs to treat this like the public health crisis it has once again become.”
This morning, we officially presented the Governor with 77 signatures to petition the House of Delegates into a special session on December 6, 2021 at 10:00a.m. in accordance with Article III, Section 14 of the Maryland Constitution.
On behalf of the Maryland House of Delegates, I offer my sincerest condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the Baltimore City firefighters who lost their lives in today’s tragic house fire.
My heart is broken with the loss of Congressman John Lewis. This morning, I am reflecting on his life: the struggles that he had as a young man fighting for racial justice and the efforts he made as a legislator to improve this country for everyone.
A call congratulating the first African-American woman

Minority Leader is how I like to start my Mondays. Wishing
@RepMcClinton
the best of luck in her work to lead PA forward.
I'm so proud to be a citizen of Maryland.
Our state legislature is a national leader because we elect talented legislators who reflect different perspectives and lived experiences.
Real representation matters.
The House just passed the
#BuiltToLearn
Act, the largest one-time school construction investment in Maryland history! We’re one step closer to ensuring that schools across the state get the funding they need to jumpstart maintenance projects that are long overdue.
Sen. Paul Sarbanes’ decades-long service to MD had a profound impact on our state. His quiet but steadfast leadership was a model for so many of us that came behind him.
Sending my sincerest condolences to
@RepSarbanes
& his family. All of us lost a great Marylander today.
I didn’t hear Governor Hogan calling for military force when armed white protestors demanded that other states reopen.
Every American deserves the same protection of leaders of all parties to exercise their constitutional rights and demand justice. (3/3)
The administration has dragged their feet to provide pandemic rental assistance funds since May. Now, tenants and landlords risk losing hundreds of millions of dollars in crucial relief. Tell Governor Hogan to get people the help they need.
After decades of gridlock, I’m proud to have helped push the federal government to finally act. My full statement on final congressional passage of the bipartisan infrastructure bill:
In Maryland, every vote will be counted. We will stand by the results of this election and urge leaders across the country to do the same
Nothing is more important to us than to ensure that your voices are heard and that your votes are counted

According to the Comptroller’s office, the 2019 Trump government shutdown kept 172,000 Marylanders from receiving a paycheck and cost our state and local governments $57.5 million in lost revenue.
We cannot afford to let this happen again.
On this last Saturday before Sine Die, we're keeping our promise to improve the life of every MDer. Today, we overrode the Gov's vetoed bills so that we can make communities safer, protect our children, expand healthcare, workers' rights & benefits & improve regional transit.
Every sector of Maryland’s healthcare system has asked for a renewed statewide mask mandate. Our overwhelmed hospitals have called on the state to declare a public health emergency. These calls have gone unanswered by the Department of Health.
Often overlooked in Annapolis is the incredible team of public servants working behind the scenes.
Our Clerks and Amendment Office Staff make all of us in the General Assembly better. We couldn’t do the work we do for the people of Maryland without them!
Officially filed for re-election with the District 10 Team! It’s an honor to continue to serve Baltimore County communities, represent D10 in Annapolis and build a stronger Maryland for residents in every part of the state.
I've appointed
@Smith4Delegate
&
@kevinmharris
to Workgroup on Improving the Academic Approval Process, to review MHEC degree-granting process and make recs on changes. It must identify program duplication w/out unnecessarily stopping universities from establishing new programs.
Restricting abortion is at the top of the to-do list for many Republicans around the country as state legislatures gavel in for their first full session since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade

In the Judiciary Committee hearing to support HB4. This common sense legislation would close a loophole in MD’s background check process for long guns & would result in tens of thousands of additional background checks.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg embodied Justice.

Maryland is sitting on nearly 400,000 vaccine doses and cannot articulate a plan to rapidly expand our vaccination efforts. The Governor needs to tell the people today what resources he’s putting in place to get Maryland vaccinated. We can’t keep waiting.
I am thankful for our dedicated first responders who are on the scene following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge this morning.
We are ready to work with our federal, state, and local partners as rescue efforts continue and pray for the safety of all those impacted.
Symbols of the Confederacy have no place in the State House.
We must ensure that the State House grounds are a reflection of Maryland’s rich history and not a home to relics of the Confederacy.
So proud my friend & colleague C.T. Wilson is Marylander of the Year.
Year after year, CT stood up in the General Assembly & shared his own story-to ensure that all MD sexual abuse survivors are seen and heard, and can heal.
Congratulations, C.T.
That ends the work at the desk and the House has adjourned. As we end Day 1 of the 2021 Special Session, I look forward to coming back tomorrow and continuing our work on behalf of all Maryland residents.
Once again, the House has passed, by an overwhelming majority, my bill to enshrine reproductive rights in Maryland’s constitution.
Regardless of what other states do, we will unequivocally be a state that supports the right to reproductive freedom.
