What Brits don’t realize is that during pride in Los Angeles…they played Meghan Markle walking into St. Paul’s in white on a loop! Keep trashing her. Make her even more iconic. Alienate the Commonwealth. Us black queens have her.
#MeghanMarkle

Side note: Brits do not see how their anti-Meghan vitriol plays in Black communities esp in Commonwealth countries. Racism built the empire and it willl destroy the Commonwealth.

The tragic irony of this Daily Mail columnist using a racist slur to rant about the biracial host of a podcast on the damaging labels used to dehumanise women.
Public radio is not known for its diversity. I know this well, I've often been the only black man in many a newsroom, show or desk in my career. It didn't quite like the Twilight Zone until I contributed to
@nprfreshair
During my interview w/Lorna Luft, as I asked why Judy Garland appealed to gays, at the very moment
@arishapiro
bounced past the window making faces and waving. The engineer, also gay, pronounced it the gayest moment in NPR history, no all history.

#nprlife
Fresh Air in many ways sets the standard for public radio's sound, and is powerful enough to set or change the agenda in publishing and Hollywood. It does it without any black voices at the table. I know public radio can do better.
The worst racism and homophobia I experienced in my career was at the hands of NPR executives. The new CEO needs to ask basic questions like: Why does NPR have one Black man reporting news and NEVER had a Black man host ATC or Morning.
News: NPR CEO John Lansing announces he intends to retire at the end of 2023.
His four-year term will be defined by his handling of the pandemic, a racial reckoning, and severe headwinds in the podcasting industry
My story:
What stuns me about
@nprfreshair
is the power it has in the publishing, tv and film communities. Juxtapose that to the appalling lack of color on the show. In Fresh Air's history it's only had 1 black editorial staffer in nearly 45 years on the air! Read that again.

For Dr. Ewing's sake it's clearly better to have done the full scale interview with Terry Gross on
@nprfreshair
than a member of the JV squad like me. However, erasing a conversation between 2 black Chicagoans talking about race and violence seems, tone death.
I went to

I knew of many problems. But a show about culture that's broadcast from Philadelphia without black staff? A city that's 44% black. C'mon.
It’s been two months since a white person has criticized my grammar, policed my tone, or made some insensitive comment about my name. I’m loving my post public radio life!

Just saw this walking down sunset ... grateful to the many black women who paved my way and gave back. Thinking of the many women who hold me up, push me forward and embrace the real me.

My mom dated a guy who reached for his spoon when they put down the finger bowls. This was the 1980s at The Pump Room. To be honest I don’t know how I’d respond to a finger bowl today
I did a public radio story this week with not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 BLACK men. And we weren't reporting on crime, hip hop, jazz or an Obama. It only took me two decades. Pardon me while I pop a bottle.(

This is a team that’s shown a history of disdain, disregard and disrespect for minority creators and our stories. The amount of pain Ira Glass has caused is immeasurable. The team should be apologizing not celebrating.
That time when
@HorsleyScott
took his day off to show my momma around the White House 2 years ago. Every week or so since she’ll say “Scott must work hard. I hear him all the time.”
Rachel Robinson the queen of Los Angeles:
I believe that the single most important impact of Jack’s presence was that it enabled white baseball fans to root for a black man, thus encouraging more whites to realize that all our destinies were inextricably linked”

My mother and her 80 year old neighbor stood in line for 3 hours to vote. “I’m gonna bring chairs when I bring the rest of my friends.”—I think pundits are missing something again.
Truly a sad day at NPR Newscaster Carl Kasell Dies At 84, After A Lifelong Career On-Air: Every weekday for more than three decades...more news to come.
#ripcarlkasell
Such a good funny dude.
You’re the rare white public radio colleague who said or did or anything when it was obvious being a black man in the newsroom was hard. Howard Berkes u saw from Utah. A union man advocating for remote work for decades. Journalism is only part of your work.

40 years ago today I became an

reporter covering the Rocky Mountain States from Salt Lake City. Here I am in my home/office studio in an old mining cabin in Allen Park Canyon in 1983. Thousands of stories & 40+ journalism awards followed. A career making good trouble
I love getting my news from my Mom. Literally I have no idea what’s going on but my mother is ready to fight somebody because of an interview that
@NPRKelly
Kelly did tonight. “ go read it and then talk to me!”

I interviewed
@eveewing
about her book of poetry 1919 last year. She also wrote a landmark book "Ghosts in the School Yard" about Chicago schools, she also has a comic book series
#ironheart
She teaches at U of C and she hosted the Studs Terkel pod. My interview never aired.

Just two black Catholic school boys from Chicago. my forever bishop. He needs all the prayer we can muster...may all the big mommas in heaven intercede on his behalf.

Got my 1st public radio internship because Richard Steele walked my resume directly to the head of HR (Dorse Kelly a black woman) after I met him at the dry cleaners. Before that I got no response. Diversity is an innovation.

Book publicists consider a booking on the show to be the Holy Grail. When a book gets on

it sells out. Hollywood stars often refuse to do other public radio shows unless they talk to Terry.

I wish I could be eloquent or thoughtful about suicide. For those of us that survive. I just fallback on something Joan Rivers used to say: “It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault.” Note the repetition.
The producer in me looks at this photo of retiring

music editor Tom Cole feels a bit o angina. The young reporter in me is grateful to a kind editor who fights for young reporters (and freelancers) and every second of airtime.
Casting is a gay superpower. Ask a gay man to reveal his superpower and he’ll close his eyes, touch his temple and say, “It’s time for Rosamund Pike to play Martina Navratilova.”
A few weeks ago, the show exec Danny Miller emailed to give me "credit" for introducing the show to Eve (as if she'd been hiding under a rock) and Terry Gross would be doing it.
A friend sent this job listing. It’s for a personal assistant. The last Responsibility on this long list for personal assistant is figure out how to record and produce a podcast. May the ghost of Daniel Schorr haunt this person!
When you are feeling anxious so u text a friend and they’re REPORTING live about the thing your anxious about —(x3) It’s like I can’t process the crazy because my friends are processing the crazy for the world. When do they process?

Hiring is not enough. You have to nurture, encourage, and treat us like multifaceted humans. I’m so grateful to Alicia. You have been riping bandaids and speaking truth to power consistently for far too long

Ripping off a band-aid here. The diversity problem in public media or any media is going to fester as long as there are zero consequences for treating JOC like garbage once they get in the door.

If you write a public person to correct grammar, you are always being an arsehole. You might think you’re upholding standards, but you’re really just tone policing.
Doug Mitchell was the 1st NPR person I met in 2004...when I called him 3 years later looking for a job, he said “hold on let me see what I can do.” I was working at
