Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron slams Joe Biden in his RNC remarks: "Mr. Vice President, look at me, I am Black. We are not all the same, sir. I am not in chains. My mind is my own. And you can't tell me how to vote because of the color of my skin"

Millennials, depending on their age, have lived through 9/11, a 20 yr war, a pandemic, an attempted coup, 4 recessions, and a restructuring of the economy led by boomers and Xers that leaves many of them in semi-permanent working poverty. Tell the whole truth or leave them alone.
Many people around the country don't seem to realize that --beyond "official" Washington-- DC is largely a town of Black and brown working class people, many of whom will have to do their jobs in the midst of threatening, violent protesters today.
We didn’t just lose loved ones. We lost the chance to say goodbye, come and hold their hands in hospital rooms, pray with them, let more light in through their curtains, and the thousand other little things you do to show someone that’s dying that you love them.
To the millions who have lost a loved one to COVID over the past two years -- what is something you wish more people understood about your experience? And your grief?

on diversity efforts at Google: "I wrote a billion documents, I had a billion meetings. They just tire you out. They meet with you over and over again. They feel good about themselves for meeting with you. They don’t do anything."
Ripping off a band-aid here. The diversity problem in public media or any media is going to fester as long as there are zero consequences for treating JOC like garbage once they get in the door.

As an old-school journalist, I always take the word "murder" out of stories about police killings, unless there's a conviction. With bitter relief, I can now write that Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd.

FWIW: The abusers aren't the whole problem. It's all the ppl protecting them, who ignore dozens of red flags. The enablers are still in their jobs, still getting raises and promotions, still more interested in keeping all that for themselves than doing the right thing.

This is maddening on several levels. Tax liens and multiple bankruptcies are framed as "financial troubles," instead of a history of irresponsibility, or feeling entitled to live beyond your means, which are also plausible explanations.
Gun companies are refocusing their message away from hunting and toward personal safety, including the sale of military-style weapons attractive to mostly young men. Their pitch — rooted in self-defense, machismo and fear — has been remarkably successful.
The media will never know whether calling a lie a lie, or calling Nazis Nazis instead of conservatives or alt right… We will never know if that would’ve changed a vote, or even prepared us to be standing where we are right now because we never tried it.
This isn’t about whether it’s good for people who hate him to hear him called a liar. It’s simply the truth. In the media, we’re supposed to the truth, not stand halfway between two groups of powerful people, repeat their words and shrug our shoulders.
Remembering 2016 and years since when journalists of color who accurately reported on Trump’s racism were dismissed as biased, hysterical, and unfit for the job.
And another thing. 10+ years ago, this country suffered a foreclosure crisis, which meant LOTS of people --disproportionately black people-- lived through losing or being pushed out of a home. Those folks weren't all rioting in the Capitol.

. As Black folks, sometimes we need to be reminded that we are more important than the labor or entertainment or whatever else we provide for others. Please take care of yourself.
After 2016, when everybody got the story so wrong, lots of media organizations kept the same leader ship, and just did the same thing over and over and over again for the last four years. And here we are.

In a country where poor people are shamed for trying to buy soda with food stamps, why didn't anyone ask why money troubles didn't stop alleged rioters from traveling (even by private jet) and staying in hotels in the middle of a work week?

Always end interviews with, "Was there something I should have asked you about, but didn't?" It's especially helpful when you're asking about personal experience, but it also works with "experts."

I started to think about all the women who'd been described to me as "difficult" or "not team players" over the years. The overlap between being difficult, and having stood up against abuse was stunning.
...about reporting it, and having nothing happen. That is, unless they pushed HARD to get the issue addressed. And then, maybe the guy would get a slap on the wrist, a very stern "don't do it again."

In abusive situations, WOC are easy targets. They're more likely to NEED the job. They're less likely to have connections who can protect them. They're more vulnerable to being smeared as "divas," "difficult," or just not ready.
I worked with many women who were young enough to be my daughters. As a manager, I couldn't tell them to watch out for men who I knew to be harassers. That would breach the privacy of those men.

Since we're going to be here a while, can we journalists:
*Start hiring Latinos in newsrooms and listening to them
*Stop pretending racial identity politics doesn't include white people
*Never again say that Pennsylvania is in the midwest; it's one of the original 13 colonies
SERIOUSLY jouros, please qualify definitive statements about the president’s lack of symptoms and general good health with “according to the White House.” We just can’t know how accurate this information is.
Remember, as we report what the president's doctors say about his health that in 2018, his doctor reported his height as 6 ft. 3, even though he'd been listed as 6 ft. 2 up until then.
"Embroiled in scandal," like you accidentally walked into a sticky web of scandal and couldn't get out, isn't an accurate way to describe years of bullying, sexually harassing or assaulting women, and threatening people who tried to stop you.

It makes women more vulnerable to sexual harassment. Because of NPR's reputation and range of fierce and brilliant women in its upper ranks, young women come to NPR expecting that they'll be safe and supported.
Re Complicity: When many media orgs talk about offering diverse groups of people "a seat at the table," what they don't tell you is that --in exchange-- they want your silence when they break the rules, or do harmful, even malicious things to other people, or even to you.

“We have survived...” except for those five people on Wednesday, the 350,000 who’ve died of Covid, the people killed in the 2019 mass shooting in El Paso, the protesters shot by Kyle Rittenhouse, the worshipers at Tree of Life synagogue…
If newsrooms were meritocracies, there wouldn’t be such a need for diversity programs. Too many White media leaders who blew the story in 2016 survived to do it again in 2020. The Black, brown and yes, some young white journalists, who got it right would have had those jobs.

Lots of Americans have spent generations enduring lies from politicians, and disappointment after elections. These people ransacked the Capitol, threatened the lives of our legislators, attacked cops. An officer and 4 others are dead.
These people were lied to, over and over, by officials at the highest levels of the American government, people with power and, presumably, knowledge. They trusted the President, and Republican members of Congress, to tell them the truth, and they believed what they were told.
