: in 2008, when oil prices peaked at $144/barrel, no one in Britain paid more than 120p per litre of petrol. Today, oil price is $113 but pump prices 186p litre. Difference is collapse in sterling from $2 to $1.20. Welcome to the Brexit.

Extraordinary intervention: US officials express their "dismay and frustration" at the continued refusal of a Conservative government awash with Russian cash to shut down the London laudromat, undermining the effectiveness of sanctions.
What a disaster Brexit is turning out to be. Even the fishing industry in whose name Johnson is holding the country to ransom are terrified of no deal. Great piece via

There’s something deeply unattractive about all these powerful people queuing up say how Priti Patel has never bullied them. It’s really another form of bullying of all those much less powerful people who clearly were abused by Ms Patel.
I have known

for many years as a friend and colleague. Yes, she’s strong and forthright in her views which is one of her great assets. I have never seen her bully anyone. She is also empathetic and incredibly kind.

eloquently explaining what Brexit control means in practice: it enables you to screw British workers by barring them from opportunities to work abroad while exposing them to greater foreign competition. More fool you who thought anything different.
This is the real scandal: it’s not just that Johnson blocked the report for nine months but that the Tories blocked any investigation of Russian interference for four years.
The full-scale of the Brexit horror show is starting to become clear. The economically rational response would be to try to reverse some of the damage. Instead the government seems set on making it worse. My latest.
Truss blames the Treasury for failing to anticipate and manage her budget disaster. That will be the same Treasury whose permanent secretary she fired, whose advice she ignored and who she accuses of peddling a failed orthodoxy 🤦
At last, an explicit admission that the Johnson government negotiated the WA in bad faith, never had any intention of keeping its word, and lied to the British public in the 2019 election. Quite a moment.
We took over a party on ~10%, worst constitutional crisis in century, much of deep state angling for BINO or 2REF. So we wriggled thro with best option we cd & intended to get the 🛒 to ditch bits we didn't like after whacking Corbyn. We prioritised. Now time for IM2

Boris Johnson has emloyed a lawyer to find a loophole in is own lockdown law that he can wriggle through. Defence now: yes there were parties and it was my job to go to them. 🤥
It appears the Johnson government is so terrified of any narrative that Britain might benefit from European cooperation that it is prepared to take risks with public health to make an ideological point.
No10 confirms that UK is not taking part in EU initiative to bulk buy ventilators and other equipment needed to tackle coronavirus. Asked why, Boris Johnson’s spokesman says: “We are not a member of the EU.”
So it seems Johnson launched his appeal for British-built ventilators three days before an EU ventilator buying scheme closed and two days after Brussels publicly said Britain was free to join. Hard to square with No. 10 claims of “communication problems”
It’s increasingly hard to avoid the conclusion that Britain’s failure to scale up testing is a result of the government’s deliberate mass infection strategy that it was pursuing until three days ago.
Excellent piece by

on the mystery of Britain’s lack of coronavirus testing. There are British firms supplying tests to the rest of Europe that have not even been contacted by the NHS, plus dozens of labs.
One of the bleakest days in modern British history. A reckless and naive PM gambled the country's prosperity and security on a half-baked claim that he could renegotiate the terms of EU membership without having the faintest idea what he wanted, or could, change...
It's 10 years to the day since David Cameron promised an in/out referendum on the UK's EU membership "to settle this European question in British politics".
And here we are.
As some of us have been warning for months, Britain now at risk of a sterling crisis. No evidence at all that Truss and Kwarteng understand the gravity of the situation. Shades of Black Wednesday.
The most jaw-dropping revelation in David Cameron’s memoirs is an implicit admission that he didn’t understand how the EU works. Nor did May and nor does Johnson. Something has gone deeply awry with the British state. My latest.
Not only did those who pushed for Brexit patently not have a plan, it is also clear they had no idea how the EU works, how the global trading system works or even how the British economy works. No amount of bluster and blame-shifting can hide their cluelessness.
Hey Mr Tusk. Those who pushed for Brexit did have a plan but it required your lot not to bully the UK, for Remoaners & the Establishment not to sabotage the wish of the majority & for Jezza’s mob not to play tribal party politics with a major National issue.
UK food and drink exports to EU fall by almost half -"the loss of £2 billion of exports is a disaster for our industry. Brexit going about as badly as expected....

Your daily reminder that parliament passed the second reading of his deal with a comfortable majority of 30. Why launch his campaign with such an obvious falsehood?
Boris Johnson has officially launched the Conservative election campaign saying he had to call the General Election because MPs "refused to budge on Brexit"
Huge test now for Boris Johnson who appears to have said nothing on this so far. Does he stand up for British officials and British institutions or capitulate to this grotesque bullying?
The wacky Ambassador that the U.K. foisted upon the United States is not someone we are thrilled with, a very stupid guy. He should speak to his country, and Prime Minister May, about their failed Brexit negotiation, and not be upset with my criticism of how badly it was...
I found video of that Penny Mordaunt US-tour speech and it sounds worse than it even reads.
To be clear, Mordaunt is framing Brexit as a war and telling America it has a responsibility to be on our side and against the EU, "because peace and prosperity don't happen by accident".
This is the important line in Steve Baker’s attack on Cummings. The Brexiteers feel duped because they didn’t bother to read the Brexit deal and convinced themselves you could sign an international treaty one day and renege on it the next. Dishonourable and stupid.
“A Home Office source said: Sir Philip and [Priti Patel] have a fundamental disagreement about the rule of law. He’s committed and she isn’t.” Extraordinary story.

Thanks. One thing I learned during 10 years spent roaming around Europe reporting on a decade of crises for the WSJ is that Britain has the most insular, parochial and ill-informed political class of any member state. That's the true British exceptionalism. Deeply troubling.
We’re aware of a shortage of HGV drivers, so I'm announcing a temp extension of drivers' hours rules from Mon 12 July, giving flexibility to drivers & operators to make slightly longer journeys. We've ramped up the number of driving tests available & will consider other measures.
A depressing enough statistic, but behind every SME that has stopped exporting to Europe lies some entrepreneur or business owner whose hopes have been pointlessly crushed.

Another remarkable stat from BoE: Core goods price inflation rose to 8.0% in UK in April, compared to 3.8% in euro area and 6.4% in US. What on earth could have happened to the UK to drive inflation to such uniquely ruinous levels? BoE too timid to say the word.
At least £300 billion wiped off value of UK assets in Truss and Kwarteng's first month as government chaos leaves Britain "uninvestable" say investors.
Delusional rewriting of history by Liz Truss. She literally side-lined the OBR, decapitated the Treasury and cut the BOE out of the loop so that she could enact her daft mini-budget. The backlash came from the global financial markets, the ultimate check on reckless politicians…
At this point an apology would be in order to those who did know the first thing about how the single market worked but were accused of peddling Project Fear. And of course an apology to all those persuaded to vote leave on false pretences who will now pay the price.

Interesting acknowledgement by an unnamed minister that for all the government's endless bullshitting about the benefits of Brexit, the public is finding it increasingly humiliating.
Remarkable achievement. Macron the first president to win reelection while in control of the government since de Gaulle in 1965. Emphatic rejection of Brexitism/right wing populism. Good news for France and Europe.
BREAKING: Tory rebel alliance has emerged from its showdown with PM saying he gave “an unconvincing explanation” of how a deal with the EU could pass before Oct 31st and didn’t give “a reasonable answer” to why the govt still hasn’t come up with an alternative to the backstop.
So Matt Hancock publicly acknowledged that Britain had been invited to participate in the EU ventilator scheme. That means that Downing Street’s “dog ate my email”/“communications problem” explanations yesterday were patently untrue. Extraordinary.

The dilemma for the EU is that even if it was minded to fundamentally renegotiate the withdrawal agreement (which seems unlikely), why would it do so with a government led by Boris Johnson, a PM who has shown his word is not to be trusted?
Lord Frost concedes the UK's proposals would require 'significant changes to the Protocol text' itself. He adds: 'We hope the EU will see that the prize of a settlement which is durable and which allows us to move on is worth the process. We must keep our eyes on the prize.'
Why on earth would Trump not include Britain when UK is only country in the world whose stated policy is to infect 60 per cent of the population in 3-4 months?
Right-wing snowflakes who devoted their careers to advocating unbridled free markets for everyone else now back economic nationalism for their own industry. Who knew that “mainstream centre-right thought” (haha) was such a fragile flower that it requires government protection?

today from Matthew Parris and the leader column following her atrocious speech speech at Chatham House. As Matthew says, do read it to see for yourself to appreciate the depth of abasement of British foreign policy.
Could the rebellion be even bigger tomorrow? I bet some decent centre right MPs already regret not being on this list alongside these brave and principled heroes many of whom I suspect will continue to play a leading role in our politics for many years to come.
A shameful day. What serious country walks away from an international forum that projects its global power? A moment of national humiliation that leaves Britain weaker.
Thank you all 🇪🇺 Ministers for your kind words at our final Council meeting. We’re leaving the EU, but we’re not leaving Europe: with our European friends we will continue to champion free trade, tackle injustices, and defend shared values. We look forward to the next chapter.
Desperate stuff. I'm old enough to remember when the driver crisis was supposed to be a benefit of Brexit which would boost wages. That was four days ago.
Amid the political chaos, so important not to lose sight of this. Johnson's imminent departure must pave the way for a full investigation of Russian influence in British politics.
As a matter of priority, we need to know the full details of Johnson’s relationship with the Lebedevs and especially what transpired at the meeting with Aleksandr Lebedev in Italy in 2018. This is an issue of real national security importance and a thread that must now be pulled.
Brexit disaster latest. What happens when you deliberately shrink your domestic overnight from 450m people to just 60m and surround yourself with new trade barriers.
This is toe-curlingly embarrassing. What must the rest of the world think that the leader of a permanent member of the UN security council and supposed global power should demean the organisation with such drivel? Shame on the British officials who cravenly giggled along.
Good thread. A reminder that before Boris Johnson reinvented himself as the hammer of the West against Putin he spent 18 months trying to bury parliament's Russia report and has subsequently failed to implement any of its recommendations.
Thinking about where we are with Sue Gray’s report, it’s worth remembering how Boris Johnson ruthlessly attempted to suppress and delay the Russia Report in 2019-20 out of personal political convenience and ahead of the national interest.
A thread. 1/6 🧵
Priti Patel’s plans to deport asylum seekers “break international law”, are “unworkable”, “undermine the UN refugee convention”, “damage Britain’s credibility” and have failed to gain cooperation of a single EU country.
First the government lied about the Yellowhammer no deal papers leaked last month, then they tried to water them down, now they have decided they are still too alarming to be officially published. Outrageous.
So much extraordinary stuff in this piece but this stood out for me. What kind of PM allows a junior spad to tell a cabinet minister to do something as momentous as announce a breach of international law without thinking through the consequences?
What this story reveals is that some at that top of the government have realised that Brexit is an economic disaster but have no idea what to do about it.
A Swiss deal is no more attainable now than it was in 2016.
Sadiq Khan’s decision to push ahead with ULEZ has been utterly vindicated. Meanwhile those Tories and their media cheerleaders who seized on a single by-election result to dump climate commitments have been made to look ridiculous, as well as cynical, reckless and irresponsible.

Just as well a previous generation didn’t take that approach to democratic scrutiny in a crisis or Britain would have been stuck with Chamberlain for the duration of WW2. Strong leadership requires challenge not groupthink.
Hard to know which was more insulting to the Greek PM: Sunak cancelling the meeting in the first place or offering a meeting with deputy PM Oliver Dowden instead. What a way to treat a close ally at a time when Britain needs all the friends it can get.
This is the heart of the Brexiter paradox so brilliantly nailed by
@fotoole
- Britain is a great global power that has no need of the EU but also an oppressed slave that needs to break free of its chains.
"There is a pattern consistent throughout history of oppressed people turning on their oppressors, slaves against their owners, the peasantry against the feudal barons, colonies Mr Verhoftstadt against their empires and that is why Britain is leaving," said Widdecombe to jeers.

If Boris Johnson was telling a DUP MP that he was planning to tear up the WA, you can be sure he said the same to his own ERG colleagues. Yet they all went into the election claiming to have a great oven ready deal. The stain of dishonour runs wide and deep...
"The Prime Minister went to the country in the 2019 General Election with an "oven-ready deal", as he called it, which he believed needed to be torn apart".
If this is true, what it reveals is not just a contempt for Britain's word abroad. It's a contempt for democracy at home.
Increasingly clear that the UK’s inexperienced and ideologically driven negotiators had rings run round them by the EU. Too late to renegotiate now. Any future changes will inevitably carry a high price.
Only ten days into Brexit and the demands to renegotiate the deal are in full flow. Unfortunately for British business, this isn’t going to happen unless UK gov wants a fundamentally different relationship.
Johnson should be grateful to Cummings for deflecting attention from this deeply reported and utterly devastating account of his dithering and incompetence in the weeks before lockdown.
This is pretty extraordinary. The Rwanda policy to deport refugees is apparently "toxic" to Tory voters in the party's blue wall heartlands yet not one of the five candidates for the party leadership is prepared to speak out against it.
What on earth is Sberbank still doing trading on the London Stock Exchange? Bizarre that the British government has not sanctioned Russia's largest bank, as the US has done, or indeed sanctioned a single oligarch with significant assets in London.
⚡️London-traded shares of Russia's largest state-owned bank Sberbank dropped by 68%.
The decline was the result of severe economic sanctions imposed against the aggressor state, including the anticipated cutting off selected Russian banks from the payment order system SWIFT.
Extraordinary to think Theresa May was still spouting this nonsense as late as January 2018. The breadth and depth of Tory ignorance about how the EU and global trading system work lies at the heart of the Brexit debacle.
Sir Ivan Rogers to European Scrutiny Committee: "Ministers told me repeatedly, 'Don't worry Ivan, you don't understand, we're going to have a trade deal in place on the day after exit'. I said, 'with the greatest respect, we're not'. I think I've been proven right".
Ridiculous argument. The Tories have delivered one gigantic supply side reform. It was called Brexit and it has been an unmitigated disaster, which is a large part of the reason why taxes and spending have had to go up. Pure gaslighting to suggest otherwise.
I think you must have been AWOL for the past decade or so if you think that’s what Tory policy has been. The tax burden is now the highest for 70 years. State spending as a share of GDP is the highest since the 1970s, when your approach to the economy took us to the brink of…
Brexiteers always insisted Brexit was a process, not an event. They were right. The danger is that it is a process that is only going one way. My latest.
Extraordinary. Theresa May is not being humiliated by the EU, she is humiliating Britain by turning up to international summits at a moment of crisis proposing half-baked solutions that she’s can even explain herself.
I also hear

Frost seems to forget that the timetable to set out new state aid rules was set by Boris Johnson who refused to extend the transition period. Astonishing that with weeks to go Johnson hasn’t even published a white paper on such a vital plank of domestic economic policy.
Johnson's Brexit deal will be almost as bad as no deal for many businesses. No wonder the prime minister refuses to be honest with voters about the trade-offs. My latest.
With the caveat that I never believed any good deal was ever possible, this is excellent by Jonathan Powell on how Britain was humiliatingly out-negotiated over Brexit with consequences that the country has barely begun to grasp,
Good letter to

. It’s clear that Britain has all the facilities necessary for the government to have massively ramped up testing weeks ago. Baffling why it hasn’t happened.
No wonder Johnson did everything possible to delay/undermine the report. Tories awash in Russian cash. Not just donors but City enablers of oligarchic capitalism
My initial take on Russia report: This is a strong report. The ISC recognizes the whole Russian enabler problem in London-lawyers, accountants and consultants getting rich off dirty Russians and refers to link between Russian state and organized crime
"Breakthrough". Britain on track to grant every one of the 1004 licences Paris had demanded. An implicit admission this confected row was another Johnson diversion tactic.
Breakthrough in the fishing talks, the UK has granted 18 new licences for EU replacement vessels in its waters and Jersey has granted another five licences for EU boats in its waters. Talks continue and the Commission hopes to have secured another seven licences by Monday
Here’s the full text of Sir Ivan Rogers latest on Brexit - a merciless analysis of a devastating failure of statecraft and the ignorance and mendacity of much of the British political class.
These Brexiteer attempts to blame the BoE for their self-inflicted crisis are predictable but dangerous. This is a crisis of confidence in the British state and attacking the one British financial institution that retains a degree of international credibility could backfire badly
