What this story reveals is that some at that top of the government have realised that Brexit is an economic disaster but have no idea what to do about it. A Swiss deal is no more attainable now than it was in 2016.

I also hear @theresa_may pushed for a 2021 deadline target for the backstop but one EU leaders pushed back and said how can this possibly be made legally binding. She had no answer. Result: they quickly decided among EU27 not to even consider offering further assurances. #Brexit
