I never would have thought of KC as a progressive transit and bicycling city, but compared to cities like St. Louis, we are downright progressive. Fare Free Transit, a working streetcar, actual protected bicycle lanes /1
No reason to spend $38m for another train between KC and St Louis, or study a new route between St Joe & Springfield, when you can spend $3B to expand I-70!
So you are telling me if I vote no, the chiefs will get a new stadium just a few miles away and someone else will be paying for it???? I can't wait to vote no
Chiefs will be in Kansas if this doesnโt pass just so you know itโs not just about the royals. Chiefs will be in a new stadium before Mahomes retires if this fails
I really want to love this, but we have been told repeatedly that we wouldn't lose any of the park. Now it looks like the vast majority will be developed vs this plan or leaving very little park left.
Here are new renderings of the $800M+ mixed-use district planned by the Kansas City Current on most of the Berkley Riverfront's remaining undeveloped land. Marquee Development, of Chicago, will serve as co-developer for the phased project. Detailed story to follow.
The DT neighborhood I live in has massive parking lots where buildings once stood. It has a highway cutting thru it that destroyed housing & businesses. My neighborhood has been torn down over time to make it easier for people to get in & out of downtown, it hasn't helped.
I keep seeing "But where will we park" coming up in context of multiple new housing/mixed use developments announced in KC. Rather than asking where we will park, Let's ask why do we have a system that requires us to buy expensive cars just to participate in society!
Ppl: ya'll wasted money on bike lanes that won't be kept clean
KCMO: meet Taylor Sweept
Ppl: you wasted money on this...
Me. Can't wait to see it in action!
I had a recent bike vs walker conversation the other day and reminded me that everyone else is left to fight for the scraps left over from car centric design. It shouldn't be that way!
โZero fare has just made riding the bus a lot more of a no brainer,โ said Onianwa, who frequently rides the bus. โIt makes it really simple getting around, at least. Especially if you know the bus routes and where they're going.โ
I will not stop pushing for better, but wow, it just takes going across the state to our sister city to see just how far we have come. Big shout out to

All that orange is a parking lot or garage. Nearly every one of these was a building at one time that was torn down. The downtown was connected to the River Market, Paseo West, the Crossroads & the West Side before being ringed with highways that torn out complete neighborhoods.
@MannyAbarcaIV
Take a break, log off Twitter for a bit, do some reflecting. You have a lot of work to do to rebuild trust with your community after your part in this whole debacle. You helped rush a poorly conceived, & executed plan. This doesn't happen without your repeated yes votes!
"The driver of the Ford was not injured"
Well fucking congratulations to them for being all snug and safe in their glorified living room on wheels after hitting a person!
My neighbor just cooked fried rice and brought dishes to everyone on the floor. We took basil plants to the neighbors for Easter. Ppl say apartments & cities are lonely, but ppl make community, not location! Go make the community you seek!
City ordinances that require bicycle parking with all new construction. A city that provides free bike racks to businesses who request them. A city with a 311 app that lets you report bike lane issues. A city who has new bike lane cleaning machines etc. /2
@colbyjacksoden
100% agree. I think history will bear out that Frank did his best to negotiate the best deal for the country/people against overwhelming political pressure to cave in and give Billionaires everything they wanted.
@ElleryKlein
the fact that we just allow these multi-ton machines to be used on our city streets with minimal instruction, training all without physical speed limiters is just astoundingly stupid.
I am enjoying watching all the people out watching the eclipse. It's so nice to see all the people take a break, step outside and take part in a shared experience.
If you see me riding my bicycle the in middle of the lane, I'm not being a dick trying to piss you off or slow you down, it's often for one of these reasons. I don't want to hold you up, or be a nascence. I just need space for safety and visibility.
@LD65264018
@TheSotaSwede
The biker is not behind the car, they are in their own lane, and the driver is wanting to cross that lane. The driver has to yield. Parallel traffic has the right of way, not the turning car, even if the turning car is there first and has a turn indicator on.
Of course he still is. This only gets worse when you find out he was on the Crime Free Multi-Housing unit, who's main goal seems to be displacement.
@TheAtlantic
did an expose on him and CFMH a few years back
NEW: A Kansas City police officer has been indicted on 14 federal counts of wire fraud & two counts of money laundering. Aaron McKie is accused of taking over $300,000 in donations to a nonprofit for his own personal use. He remains employed by KCPD.
โVehicle crashes are among the leading causes of death in the U.S. But it doesnโt have to be this way. We can design or redesign streets to make people drive more slowly or to discourage driving altogetherโ

@RMCAKC
Garden Club did a cleanup around the
@SikeStyle
mural this morning. If you know the man, the legend that is J-Whiz, the man featured in this mural, you know he's a mainstay of urban bicycling in KC & often found dancing at 1st Fridays on 18th Street. Such a cool mural!
Just watched a driver in a massive BMW SUV run a stop sign on 9th St only to turn the wrong on a one way Street, Baltimore, just to pull into their garage at Sky On Main.
Congrats, by being an inconsiderate and completely shitty driver, you saved 30 seconds!
@JazHays
@rogersforKC
Always good to remember that KCMO has a Climate Action Plan, and that it is absolutely meaningless when we continue to vote time and time again against it.
@AustinStrassle
Plus literally everyone said Oracle would screw over KC as soon as a they bought Cerner. Seems the Mayor and Council were they only ones who believed otherwise.
Counter argument. The cost of cars(car dependency) is one of the main reasons Americans have no savings, no retirement and housing costs so much. It's the biggest killer of people under 30, & contributes heavily to our poor health outcomes. Drive less, live more!
Unpopular Opinion: People should spend more money on cars.
You spend a large percentage of life in your car.
It makes sense to invest in a car you enjoy.
Dear
@CityofStLouis
. The bicycle lanes downtown are confusing to drivers who don't know where to park. Please install some flex post and curb stops between the parking lane and the bike lane, otherwise drivers will continue to think that the bike lane is the parking lane.
Absolutely we need better Public Transportation, the entire region needs better Public Transportation. Regional Rail to get the suburban & ex-urban people into the city. Better busses and more street cars to get them around the city once here, but more parking isn't the solution
@GoingDutchDEN
Very proud of you! Wish we had more parents and citizens who cared enough to be part of of solution rather than reactionary knee jerk trolls who add nothing of value to society. Keep it up!
One reason I advocate for bike/walk/bus is that my vision issues like this are relatively workable at human speeds. If on the bus, no big deal, If walking/riding, I can easily & safely stop. If driving a car, it's very dangerous & harder to pull over, find a parking spot etc
While Busch Stadium has more official bicycle parking than Kauffman stadium, it's pretty sad that this is the only official bicycle parking that a downtown stadium in a nearly flat city has. Finding any bicycle parking downtown was difficult.

Should we prevent drinking and driving? Nah, let's let someone drink and drive, if they get caught, then we can take action. That is one hell of a take.
Perhaps extensive river side work will be done to reclaim lane and expand that area into usable park. Renderings kind of look like that, but that is going to be very very expensive. Will it make it into the final product?
According to one source close to the shelter negotiations who The Star is not naming due to fear of retribution, โNot only was the proposal sound, very sound, (Hope Faith) has 10 years established experience working with this population.โ

Approving an update to the Trails KC Plan as a guide for future shared-use trail development & corridor preservation within the City of Kansas City
@BarsottiKlb
a promenade isn't' a replacement for a park. A new town square is cool. but will be be fully public 24/7 or access controlled for residents only. I spend so much time in this park, I'm just sad to see be lost.
@jspence1234
I don't have kids, but this bullshit about kids not belonging in public is fucking nuts. Might as well tell parents they can't have a life for 18 years and their kids shouldn't learn to socialize in public. Why even fucking have kids then?
@BarsottiKlb
yep, very disappointed that they are developing on park land when we have all those surface parking lots along Wyandotte from 6-9th that could be converted to housing first. I fear what little park will be left will be too small to accommodate actual needs.
@Kylesfunhavings
North Loop is ripe for a cut-n-cover subway line between KCK and the Historic NE. A number of tweets lately about other KC sized cities in Europe with two or more metro/subway lines.
@LD65264018
@TheSotaSwede
Also in case you didn't notices this sign posted at that intersection. It clearly reads, Turning Vehicles, yield to bicycles and walkers
@LD65264018
@TheSotaSwede
If the biker was a car in a car lane and you wanted to turn right from the left lane, would you think you still had the right of way because your blinker was on? In reality, the biker sees & knows the driver is going to turn, likely without looking, so they should slow down.
@Kylesfunhavings
@CBQ_Fanatic
This is just one step in a long term plan to bring people down there. 1st Fridays has brought lots more visitors to the area. Combine with the new SomeraRoad projects, the new apartments next door, Hy-Vee arena, the new levee trails & trail connections
@Ringneck85
Perhaps you didn't read the thread fully, I said I wasn't happy existing park land was being developed on, but would love to see this development on surface parking lots just up the street literally in my back yard.

Kansas City Kansas has the lowest ridership of all the cities in the greater Kansas City metro area. Check out the Strava heat map. KCK has virtually no bike lanes, no protected bike lanes and it shows.
