Iโll have a lot to say what happened today at the MLPS Ward 10 Convention but candidate Nasri Warsame attempted to fight me today โ Iโve been volunteering for caucuses for over 10 years and Iโve never experienced anything comparable in my entire DFL experience. UNACCEPTABLE.
Wow, Iโm at George Floyd Square (Chicago and 37th) and a man in an Agape shirt and another woman is physically intimating people and has told someone to shut their โgay assโ up when they engaged in conversation - What in the fuck
@CityMinneapolis
?
Folks, Iโve been involved in the caucus and convention process a lot; Iโve been a state delegate, national delegate, and Iโm sitting DNC member โ I have NEVER felt as unsafe today in a DFL space until TODAY.
Acts of violence in this party are completely UNACCEPTABLE.
Today, I truly feared for Aishaโs safety as Convention Sergeant at Arms โ I did everything I could to get her and her supporters off the stage away from the chaos.
She and her supporters should have not been put in that situation โ I shouldnโt have been put in that situation.
Today was horrifying, unacceptable, and indicative of the growing threat to progressive, pro-people candidates and movement leaders.
See my campaignโs statement on the violence perpetrated by the Nasri Warsame campaign at the Ward 10 convention today.
This is who you got to de-escalate? Seriously? Folks who scream at people and tell people who โsound gayโ to shut their ass up and not talk to them? What a joke
Shoutout to the
@KyYoungDems
who have been GRINDING the last few months to help make sure
@AndyBeshearKY
โs election would never be in doubt.
This is an amazing win and the night is still young!
Just saw Gov.
@Tim_Walz
on
@CNN
talk about the MN primary result, particularly around the 20% uncommitted result.
Very thoughtful response about how we need to listen to voters valid concerns if we want to be successful this fall - need to see way more of this from Dem leaders
Did this man and his campaign imply that it was OUR fault that some of his supporters assaulted (or attempted to assault) me and other volunteers yesterday?
Iโm absolutely speechless.
This email this morning from All of Mpls is absolutely disgusting.
Our DFL precinct caucuses should be about bringing neighbors together โ not pushing division by using far-right talking points.
Language like this is not how you build a stronger community or party.
Amir Locke was ambushed and murdered by the Minneapolis Police Department. Now we are seeing the same cycle of obfuscation, mistruths, and misdirection that we've seen time and time again from city leadership.
When will we break this cycle?
Shout out to all of the other UNPAID VOLUNTEERS who tried to help make the
@MinneapolisDFL
Ward 10 Convention get its business done today.
Iโm appreciative of you all and angry as hell that some of yโall had people put their hands on you today for no god damn reason.
Iโm wearing one of Rachelโs
@MFT59
blue shirts today and sheโs wearing one of my
@SPFE28
red shirts.
We are proud to be union educators demanding better for all Twin Cities students.
And maybe this isnโt honest question - maybe Iโm asking rhetorically. Either way, I think we are all waiting for an explanation from the folks who told us time and again โwe alone can fix itโ.
When I ran for President of the
@youngdems
, something that I talked with YD leaders about was the need for the Democratic Party to listen to the voices of young people within the party clamoring for both change and boldness
1/
Hey
@StarTribune
, since yโall are so interested in the tweets of unpaid activists, why donโt you go write an article about all the vile garbage Walter Hudson, an actual elected official, spews on a near daily basis.
George Floyd was murdered two years ago today by the Minneapolis Police Department and not a god damn thing has been done to keep them from killing Black folks again.
Itโs extremely gross to see people calling on educators to be armed in the classroom. Itโs the worst kind of reactionary response.
You know what educators actually need? Elected officials to grow a spine, do their god damn jobs, and deliver serious real world solutions.
This weekend, the
@youngdems
brought together nearly 250 people from across the country to Arlington, VA, for our winter meeting. I am so incredibly thankful to
@VAYD
for working with our leadership team to put together a truly fantastic event. (1/4)
This is Young Democrats appreciation tweet - so many of yโall throughout the country are doing fantastic work and I just wanna say thank you!
Seeing you succeed and kick ass fills my bucket - keep on being awesome!
Finally got a chance to vote early for all the DFL endorsed candidates on the ballot in HD64A. Especially excited to vote for
@keithellison
,
@MNSteveSimon
, and
@BlahaForAuditor
; these down ballot statewide races matter just as much as the Governor. Get out and vote!
Letโs talk about it: as one of the very few black men on the State Exec, it has not go unnoticed that members can make excuse after excuse when others violate our ill defined rules but when a black man does it, we immediately start throwing out words like โaccountabilityโ.
I know we're still watching results come in BUT:
I would be so remiss if I did not recognize the efforts of that the
@KansasYoungDems
did to help support the work of the
@Kansans4Freedom
campaign.
Y'all are rockstars - don't sleep on Kansas.
Iโm sure we will see specifics (and can iron them out) but this is a crucial first step in addressing what happened today in Ward 10.
I will be urging my colleagues on the State Executive Committee to follow our Chairโs lead here and take swift action.
I will be calling an emergency meeting of our State Executive Committee to address the issues on Ward 10. I will be proposing a bylaw to ban individuals engaged in violent assaults from the DFL Party and will then take immediate action to remove the folks involved in Ward 10.
YDA Onward is pleased to announce our candidate for YDA President,
@QuentinOcama
! Q is a lifelong resident of St. Paul, MN, an educator, and the current president of the
@youngdems
. He was raised by the
@MYDFL
and remains an active member of the MYDFL board.
Today, I was elected
@MYDFL
President for the second time (the last time was 2015).
2024 is going to be interesting... we've got some serious work to do as an organization. Stay tuned for more.
Once again, great to see
@MaxwellFrostFL
here at the
@ydnc
Convention. His passionate message around organizing and community certainly has me fired up!
I started my day by crying uncontrollably in the shower. Iโve sobbed quietly at my desk today when nobody was looking.
Itโs okay to not be okay, yโall - itโs okay to shake with red hot anger and feel completely overwhelmed by events.
We deserve so much better than this.
Iโve seen a lot of things in my time with the
@youngdems
but this is a first.
Frankly, this is clown shit because I donโt know how else to describe this goofy ass attempt to disenfranchise young people from helping shape the direction of the party.
โก๏ธINBOX: 4 members of the
@tndp
executive committee are suing the state party to get โex oficioโ member voting power removed โ including
@TNYoungDems
@TNHSDems
TN Federation of Democratic Woman and more.
I still canโt believe
@abreezeclayton
is the party chair of the
@NCDemParty
.
Iโve been at the Minnesota DFL SCC Meeting all morning/afternoon and Iโm still in awe!
Donโt be surprised when we walk into the 2022 with a massive enthusiasm gap - critical planks of the Build Back Better agenda have been gutted piece by piece over the last few weeks. It either looks like incompetence or a giant bait and switch - it doesnโt have to be this way.
Iโm teary eyed listening to Keith Ellison. There are so many things I could say as a Black Minnesotan but what I will say for now: Keith is gonna win.
I want people to organize and mobilize with the goal of expanding our Democratic majorities but blindly repeating cliche phrases about how โif you donโt like whatโs happening now, vote in 2022โ scapegoats responsibility that we are currently failing to deliver on our agenda.
I got to talk to some folks from the Independent this evening (along with a ton of other awesome Young Democrats) at the
@ydnc
convention about youth engagement in the Democratic Party and how amazing
@abreezeclayton
is!
I am proud to have helped draft this resolution with other
@MYDFL
members &
@StonewallDFL
What has happened in the Twin Cities the last week has been a travesty and as a leader, I have an ethical & moral obligation to call out wrong no matter who is committing that wrong.
This evening, the Executive Committee of the Minnesota Young DFL and
@StonewallDFL
Board of Directors passed a resolution of no confidence in the leadership of Governor Tim Walz. Please see our statement below.
The text of the resolution is available at
Man, this is a fantastic thread - still so proud of the mountain
@abreezeclayton
climbed to become chair and how she did it (the how is SO important).
She continues to be an inspiration for young people in politics and I canโt wait to see what she delivers in 2024.
one year ago today we launched a campaign for Chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party! ๐ค ๐ซถ
just a bunch of โkidsโ with computers, spreadsheets and a campaign manager (
@GraysonForNC
) / call time manager (
@ColtonBrowder
) duo who both drilled into me that we could do it. ๐งต
I am so damn tried of conservatives accusing Democrats & activists of politicizing tragedy.
There are fucking dead kids - people should be talking about this AND advocating for ways to END these kind of tragedies.
Truly, take that faux outrage bullshit somewhere else.
To the Democratic activists throughout the country who constantly fight for a more inclusive party after being continual dismissed - I see you. Your perseverance is literally what keeps me going some days.
7/
Appreciate the opportunity to kick off the
@VAYD
Convention today by saying a few words.
It's always such an honor to remind Young Democrats that they are not in this fight alone
#RVAYD2023
Iโm not crying, youโre crying - so incredibly proud of
@abreezeclayton
. You are an INSPIRATION.
I believe Anderson is now the third current YD state party chair!
Itโs 2023, so the bar is in hell but Roseville, Minnesota WILL NOT have a holocaust denier on the Board of Education.
THIS IS WHY YOU GOTTA PAY ATTENTION TO LOCAL ELECTIONS โ ESPECIALLY SCHOOL BOARD.
What I have said, and continue to say, if we continue to ignore the voices of young activists we will lose their skills and talents to amazing outside organizations who have been building power independent of party structures - we are creating a mutual exclusive landscape
3/
@OrganizerMemes
So I worked on campaigns for nearly a decade and I learned one thing: take the jobs that bring you joy and walk away from the ones that donโt.
Be smart about it obviously - consider your conscious, ethics and how it may impact other factors, but stillโฆ I would do it.
I grew up in a very white neighborhood in the 90s and 2000s and was called the N-Word randomly as a child on multiple occasions by full ass adults. My older brother experienced much worst things in the 80s.
Iโd say stop lying but I know Walter believes his own bull shit.
We also know that our structures far too often act as meat grinders - spitting out cohort after cohort of young activists who leave interacting with our party feeling deeply hurt, bitter, and dismissed- Iโm sick of tired of seeing this play out over and over again
4/
Today, I joined with over 65 Young Democrat leaders from across the country in urging
@Sen_JoeManchin
to reconsider his stance on Build Back Better.
Senator, we have a real opportunity to deliver for the American people but we can only do that together. Let's get this done.
This morning, YDA delivered the following letter to
@Sen_JoeManchin
signed by 69 Chaptered Unit Presidents and members of the National Committee urging him to reconsider his position on the Build Back Better Agenda.
We eagerly await his response.
I am so saddened to hear about the passing of Emily Beer. As many people described her, she was a true โYDA Legendโ - somebody whose work and service went far above and beyond to make sure the organization was moving forward. 1/3
We canโt talk about a โbig tentโ party in good faith if we are not willing to challenge the behaviors, culture, and structures that make it accessible and welcoming only for some - and guess what? Sometimes that may make us uncomfortable but thatโs okay!
5/
I just voted to โYESโ to allow
@SPFE28
to authorize a strike. Our educators and students deserve more than what weโre being offered.
#WeAreWorthMore
Overturning both Roe and Casey will cause irreparable harm for a generation (and potentially more) of Americans.
This is a god damn travesty.
We must fight with all available means to protect reproductive rights.
We call on Democrats stop at nothing to ensure that we can protect all peopleโs right to reproductive care.
For anyone who tries to lean on their religious beliefs as a crutch to justify their weak moral backbones, we hope that your God is a merciful one because we will not be.
To any Young Democrat organization that would like me or another
@youngdems
officer to come to an event (especially in an election year) โ we would be happy to if possible, just give us like tons of advance (60 days?) notice so we can appropriately plan ๐
We just wrapped our
@youngdems
Winter Digital Summit.
Thank you to the nearly 200 Young Democrats from across the country who participated in our programming and thanks to all the trainers and speakers who made this weekend happen - can't wait to see what we can do in 2022!
What happened this past Saturday during the Alabama Democratic Party Executive Committee is simply disgusting โ it's an absolute travesty.
Please read the official statement from the
@youngdems
and join us in taking action in the pursuit of an inclusive and open party.
Young Democrats of America condemn blatant disenfranchisement of young people by the Alabama Democratic Party and remain in solidaritywith abolished Disability and LGBTQ+ Caucuses.
Thank you to the
@youngdems
National Officers who participated in todayโs first full officerโs call of the new administration.
We got through over 40 agenda items in only two hours - we have so much to do but Iโm excited to get to work (and do it with this great group of folks!)
Itโs sad that that I had to listen through 5 hours of conversation about someoneโs Facebook post instead of spending my Saturday continuing to celebrate our partyโs historic wins on Tuesday.
It makes even someone like me, who lives and breathes politics, want to disengage.
While we may not always agree, Iโm thankful to my fellow members of the
@MinnesotaDFL
SEC who tonight unanimously voted to adopt two bylaws to bar anyone who participates in violence at our events from engaging in our caucus processes 1/2
Iโm biased but Steve Simon is the best Secretary of State in America.
Today the
@MinnesotaDFL
endorsed Steve Simon and Keith Ellison - two men who will fight like hell to defend Minnesotaโs institutions and democracy.
The firewall against an extremist Governor in Virginia remains!
HUGE shoutout to
@VAYD
,
@royermattw
,
@feminisam
, and so many others who made sure Young Democrats played a huge role in getting these wins. This is ANOTHER example of what happens when YDs lead and ORGANIZE!
Iโm seeing SO much blue today at work as our colleagues in Minneapolis go on strike. Our contract may be settled here in STP but we know that your fight is our fight. Solidarity!
#MFT4Kids
#SafeAndStableMPS
I just got off the phone with the new
@YoungDemsofSC
board to congratulate them on their election.
Young Dems in places like Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia today held amazing conventions showing that YDs are excited and ready to make a difference this fall!
We know what our millennial and Gen Z peers want and need from an organization that constantly asks for both our time, labor, and money - and yet far too often our lived experiences are invalidated and ignored
2/
Results are still coming in, but wow, Ohio โ you're making history tonight and will this fall.
I'm in awe of the activists on the ground in the Buckeye State, especially
@SpencerDirrig
,
@LucyFrank432
, and the entire
@OhioYD
team.
Comments like this are how we lose
It assumes the electorate doesnโt see our own inability to get things done that we have talked about for over a year. Not acknowledging where we currently are is an absolute absurdity.
What we are absolutely NOT going to do is make this about the Somali people. These were very specific people. There were many other delegates and supporters of Warsame who were trying to reason with instigators and calm the crowd all day.
Wow, Iโm watching Kyrsten Sinema interview with Jake Tapper and she really think Arizona voters are idiots.
Literally she thinks questions about who she is going to caucus with is a โDC bubbleโ question and refuses to answer ๐
Come on now - thatโs a basic question.
I hate to bring this back up but when people say Democratic voters, particularly young Democrats, want to see a โyoungerโ candidate to run for President I can guarantee you that nobody was thinking of Dean Phillips.
Iโm sorry but these news stories are just so absurd ๐คฆ๐ฝโโ๏ธ
Alright, my phone is finally useable again now that itโs not constantly buzzing with notifications. I appreciate all the folks that have been reaching out - it means a lot.
Happy Tuesday, yโall!
We have an opportunity to do better - to build sustainability, to elevate the next generation of leaders, and to help enact positive change but we can only do that together.
6/
Simply put: Young Democrats across this nation stand with
@brotherjones_
,
@Justinjpearson
, and all those young Tennesseans demanding action on gun violence and we condemn the autocratic tactics and blatant racism of the
@TNGOP
house caucus.
SPOTTED: The Dean Phillips for President bus is already on the road. Photo from my friend Amy Waller, who sells German wine, on the road in Ohio. Bus says โMake America Affordable Againโ and uses his slogan โEveryoneโs Invited!โ Website isnโt live, but just registered 10/12.
I love Minnesota and repping this fantastic state in my involvement in national Democratic politics but let's be for real for a second โ this is pretty ridiculous ๐
Rep. Dean Phillips, who once said younger Democrats should challenge President Biden, plans to meet with Democratic donors in New York next week to help determine if he should be among them.
