The Department for Transport has just introduced some new road signs for use on the UK's roads. First up, there's this helpful reminder that if your journey is taking longer than it used to, it's because there are too many cars.

I'm not militant about cycling, I'm militant about not wanting to die on my way to work just so someone in a car can save 5 seconds off their journey. I'm not fanatic about cycling, I'm fanatic about being able to get about safely without owning a car.

I've not heard any complaints recently from drivers about being delayed by cyclists. I find this strange, considering the apparent increase in the number of people cycling. It's almost as if it was something else delaying drivers, something that there are fewer of on the roads.

I keep seeing comments saying a 5yo is too young to be cycling on the road because they're incapable of assessing risk and acting accordingly. These are, of course, in response to *that video* of a driver who was seemingly incapable of assessing risk and acting accordingly.

When a cyclist is in a collision with a pedestrian, we're told the solution is training for cyclists so they learn not to endanger pedestrians. When a cyclist is hit by a driver, the same people tell us the solution is training for cyclists so they learn not to be hit by drivers.

The officers will almost certainly have witnessed numerous driving offences whilst parked in the cycling lane (including, potentially, their own). However, the non-offence they deemed worthy of using their blues for was being criticised. This is bad policing.

For argument's sake, let's assume we could eliminate all cyclist deaths if they wore helmets and hi-vis, always used lights, and never ran red lights. In 2019, that would mean 100 fewer road deaths. Now, let's look at factors that contributed to more than 100 road deaths: [1/4]

@gmpolice There's nothing a pedestrian, or anyone for that matter, can do to make sure they can be seen by other road users. There is an effective way for drivers to see others and that's to drive at a speed that allows them to stop safely withing the distance they can see to be clear.
