This is my MP
@DrRosena
she voted NO to allowing water companies to discharge sewage into seas and rivers.
If you want a better future for this country then get yourself a Labour MP at the next election.
#SewageScandal
I’m a Labour councillor.
@MayorofLondon
has made brave & difficult choices to give our children clean air.
Kier put an anti-ULEZ candidate in Uxbridge. It backfired on him & he must own that.
Labour must not become the pro-pollution Party.
Has to be one of the biggest cars I’ve seen on our street. The size of it next to the hangar. A reminder that I pay more to park our 3 bikes in that hangar than Wandsworth charges for the space for this. Call me a socialist but our land needs to be shared out fairly.
Male driver who close passed me & shouted ‘you stupid f***ing c**t at Trafalgar Squ didn’t reckon -
- me being a Manc
- my knowledge of the streets of Soho
- speed of bike v car in central London
Got an apology on Dean Street
Range Rover Sport SVR, valued at £180,000, could be seen hitting a top speed of 110mph on the 40mph-limit A40 westbound near Ealing, Greater London, before he lost control.
Why does
@LandRover_UK
sell a car that has a top speed of 176 mph?
This photo will be shown to our great-grandchildren to teach them how a minority of rich white men led a fight against clean air.
@JamesMelville
this isn’t what you really want for my kids is it?
Pavement parking a bigger issue in the north with the tiny pavements.
@DPDgroup_news
The driver came out & told me if I post this photo ‘we will meet again’. I’ve got the photo of the driver if his employer is interested.
Driver head down texting as she drove down Garratt Lane. Not lifting her head, just moving as she sensed traffic infront went. She threw the phone in the air with shock when I tapped on her window. These people cause road death & it’s an unenforced crime.
I didn't think anyone would get angry about zebra crossings by a school.
I was wrong. There are people who get livid at the idea. A rage I've never experienced blasted at me during the zebra consultation.
One man asked me how many kids had died.
If you must use a Discovery Range Rover to pick your kids up from their independent school then please don’t be texting when you drive past the kids leaving Chestnut Grove school.
Asked a mum to put her phone down & she said “I’d mind my own business if I were you”.
As if.
Living car free means I can afford to take my kids on holiday. As a single parent, I can’t imagine how we would have done holidays if I’d been handing over that cash to the auto & fuel industries.
PM celebrating car dependency shows how little he understands working people.
This week I did a deputation at the Transport Cttee to say that we need to move away from the legacy belief that roads are only dangerous with high volumes of cars & 3 previous collisions.
Coronation Street & Albert Square are set in 15 minute cities. Imagine trying to pitch a new show to a producer ‘it’s about a community where most of the storylines are set in the characters’ cars as they drive to the shops’
The one thing that’s true is that most people outside of London are completely car dependent.
After tax, a chunk of hard earned salaries goes to the auto industry & the government.
There is no plan to free you from this.
It’s called transport poverty.
We are a nation of drivers.
Most of us use a car every day and, for many, life would be difficult without their car.
But too often, drivers feel under attack.
That changes today with a long-term plan to improve drivers' experience on the road.
Here’s how 👇🧵
I felt a bit sick watching humans doing this to each other.
It makes me realise what the suffragettes went through. We don’t have that on video but they were violently physically & sexually assaulted by men like this as they protested.
@PolitlcsUK
People have had enough of these "stop oil" protests.
This popped up the other day showing some protestors being dragged off the road.. again.
If Liz wants to see people on bikes then she’ll need to get up & out when us mere mortals are commuting. There’s something quaintly Nancy Mitford about sitting in an Addy Lee at 9.30 asking where the non-U’s are.
Son is going camping with scouts next month. Place they’re going to is 16 minutes walk from train station. Scout leader was asking for drivers to take them. I suggested that part of being a scout is being able to travel independently & he’s agreed to try this out! 🛤🚶🏾♂️
First time cycling on South Uist. Drivers actually slow or even stop to let you pass on the narrow lanes. And then they wave at you. Isn’t that a lovely way to be?
There's been no tweets from
@LandRover_UK
since their latest and fastest Range Rover was involved in a fatal road collision. As the social media team regroup to discuss when is good to come back & with what message, here's an idea - try a strategy of talking about road peace.
It’s time to tighten up advertising regulations for cars. They need to be sold with the same responsible advertising that the machine industry adheres to. This is toy marketing.
Didn't expect a pile on by police for pointing out absolute state of car advertising being fastest thing ever & what happens when a driver tries that claim out on roads that have no enforcement.
Car culture rules. Do not criticise the car!
Transport poverty is created when a society removes cheap travel options such as safe cycling & affordable, reliable public transport leaving millions forced to purchase & maintain private cars to get to work.
My mortgage has risen by so much that I’m now getting ready to sink my fears about cycling to work.
It will save me £300 a month. I’m no longer able to justify paying for the tube when a free option is available.
I’ve not cycled for some time due to some horrible close passes.
Media increasingly relying on anti-cycling content to grow ad £. There’s one today that blames a cyclist for his own death. We can neutralise this by never responding or sharing. Taking the approach that many of us have to the Sun. Zero engagement.
If I am elected Mayor, I will remove the 20mph limit on red routes like Finchley Road, which unfairly penalises drivers, while retaining the limit in residential areas and around schools.
The woman who survived the Range Rover SVR crash spoke today of begging the driver to slow. He liked to drive fast and to tease people in his car.
Selling this car to someone who has a history of speeding was irresponsible.
This text seems to have been removed.
Lots of anger &confusion about why
@carlafrancome
might want to use taxis occasionally. Some journeys require a car. Owning a car is expensive & they spend a lot of time sitting waiting to be used. A cheaper alternative is a taxi. I’ve used taxis 3 times this year (ducks).
I asked him how many dead kids he needed to hear about to calm him down.
It's been a deeper insight into humans & how we deal with change. And how children are kind of demonised by some adults.
The one e-bike we hired this week can’t go faster than 15.5 mph. Which seems a decent speed to get around.
So how come the cars driving around us can go faster than 100 mph?
It’s like we’ve set things up for catastrophic consequences.
When you ask a neighbour to stop driving down our road so fast:
I’m unable to drive at 20
Stop being so nervous
Get a hobby
Go & live in the countryside where there are no cars
In summary, that’s a no.
My daughter sat GCSE maths today and there was a question about where to buy the cheapest petrol given a range of stats. She thinks the answer was Wales, but also confused about why a 16 year old in 2022 would be asked about the price of fossil fuel for a car.
So I’m no longer showing up for Speed Watch. I’d prefer it was removed as a step in the path towards dealing with the issue. Let’s go straight to proper data collection with traffic counters, placed where residents say the speeds are highest. 10/10
See that gap - that’s what over 1600 kids squeeze through to get to school.
At least the cyclist stopped.
The headteacher is out in hi-viz stopping speeding drivers.
Hildreth Street is a pedestrianised zone. The guy that runs Voodoo Lounge treats it as a free car park.
@wandbc
let’s get this enforced - it’s a long term issue with this business owner.
There’s many reasons why the e-scooters that councils trial need to be capped at 15 mph. I just read this car review in the Times. The journalist was trialling out a new car in London. Wondering why we didn’t ask for similar restrictions for cars?
It took some time to persuade this driver to leave the disabled bay.
I was shouted at used & told ‘not all disabilities are visible’. But he has no blue badge.
He’s been able to park round the corner to get his Pret coffee.
Driver privilege - park wherever you want.
This harrowing footage shows the dangers posed by those who drive whilst under the influence. You are putting your life and the lives of others at risk.
The driver was sentenced to jail after running over a cyclist in broad daylight.
Full story:
£22 to travel by bus the equivalent distance of zone 1 to 4 & back for me & 2 kids.
2 buses an hour today & 10 people left behind at the bus station as it’s full now.
This is what forces car dependency outside of London.
Ben Elton’s new series looks good on
@Channel4
The Great British Railway Disaster on Monday, June 26 at 8pm
Shining a light on the state of our trains & the car dependency this has created.
I wrote for
@cyclingindustry
about how to sell bikes to people like me who aren't cyclists.
I use a bike to move around in the same way that I walk, get the bus & tube. It's a form of transport, not a hobby.
Councils need to focus on enabling more women to cycle.
I’m usually seeing this from the outside. It’s a very odd feeling seeing it from the backseat. I’ve asked him to stop doing it but it is awkward & I’d imagine many people don’t feel comfortable asking their driver to stop.
The driver who is honking & yelling at you to get out of their way will instantly be soothed as they pass & sit calmly in the traffic line ahead. It’s like calpol.
We’d move around more efficiently if there was less reliance on private car usage. Bus on Trinity Road held up behind a mass of private vehicles all pumping out toxic fumes. It could all be so different. And cheaper.
75% agreed: “People shouldn’t smoke in highly populated areas where other people have to breathe in the cigarette fumes.”
2 words changed – “people shouldn’t drive in highly populated areas where other people have to breathe in the car fumes” 17% agreed
A dad driving around Waitrose car park with his baby in car seat while he texts. In an enormous Range Rover. Refused to put his phone down even when I said ‘you’ve got a baby in your responsibility & kids are leaving the library’. Just zero care.
Designers of the Hammersmith Bridge proposal have taken a sympathetic look at the Highway Code’s hierarchy of road users & responded by … flipping it on its head.
I’m happy to see so many people
I know from twitter who care about walking & cycling provision being elected.
Also happy that so many people I see on twitter who fought to continue car dominance losing their seats.
Driver of the Porsche lost his complete mind when I asked him to slow down on my road.
He said it was the roar of his engine that makes the car seem to be going over 20 mph.
He was as aggressive as his engine sounded.
What a strange thing to want - a loud engine.
Horrific scenes on Chestnut Grove as children are put into direct conflict with heavy traffic. The driver’s response was to bang on her horn to disperse children who are spilling off the narrow pavement. We desperately need a solution from
@wandbc
I don’t understand why the government have acted so fast on the X-LARGE dog thing but not on this issue.
Why is it ok for some kids to die on the road?
The only way to stop speeding is to have so many cars on the road that drivers are travelling at 5 mph on the speed display. All the way from top of Tooting Common to Balham High Rd.
Surely the slowest form of transport for many people this morning?
Really poor behaviour from a driver who drove down the road clearly marked as a ‘School Street’. She smashed up this sign. She refused to engage about it & shot off. Despite parents shouting at her to stop driving.
Parents in Glasgow have made cycling to school safer for primary children through a ‘bike bus’ – a group procession along an agreed route where children are protected by a ring of adults
🚴🚴♀️🚴♂️
I did something this morning I’ve been working on for 2 months, 30 mins a day practicing without a miss.
I stood up from sitting crosslegged -like kids do.
I’m v active but couldn’t do this simple movement. It did my head in.
I’d given myself til Xmas - it happened today!
I cycled to & from Camden in a dress today as I had a couple of meetings & didn’t want to keep changing. It was a very pleasant experience in this heat.
Abdul at Lug-It tells me that these trolleys are selling well to local residents who want to drive less & save money. They go from £25 to this top of the range at £95. Abdul says it’s better for the environment & we get some exercise.
#shoplocal
It costs £72 per bike in Wandsworth.
It costs me £216 to store our bikes. My daughter is a delivery rider so it’s also her work vehicle.
It is cheaper to park a car on our street.
Today I'm cutting the cost of cycle parking in Lambeth so that a family of four is not penalised for choosing to cycle rather than drive.
From next week, it will cost £30 to park a bike in a hangar. By 2026, there will be 5000 spaces available.
The cows came out without their hi-viz and walked down the 'middle of the road'.
No-one lost it. Drivers slowed down to under 5 mph and gave them a wide berth.
It's lovely this is done for the cows. It shows what is possible for us to share the road.
I read car reviews because marketing of brands interests me. Cars aren’t marketed as mobility aids. Somewhere along the way they became hardwired into identity. When we talk about reducing journeys by car in cities, we are also dealing with issues of status & self-affirmation.
This one lives on the next road to me and gives close passes whenever I see him. He was face down in his phone on Chestnut Grove and now on Balham High Road. Literally glued to his phone. And he’s on the road putting our lives at risk every day.
Not a single woman has popped up today to argue that we need 30 mph roads or that it’s ok to speed.
Imagine what our roads would be like if our Transport planning officers were overwhelmingly female, not male?
My neighbour has been too afraid to cycle since a bus driver almost hit her last year. My son has sorted her bike out and we are cycling to yoga together. After a bad experience on the road it helps to go out with another female cyclist to restore confidence
@JoyridersLondon
@jonburkeUK
I don’t understand why the jury had to listen to character references. I’m sure she’s really lovely. But she’s clearly a really shit driver & shouldn’t be in control of a 4x4 again. Being nice isn’t the skill we need to control machines.
The size of SUVs, parked on either side of the road, & as one comes towards another one, brings our narrow Balham roads to a standstill most days.
These cars do more to clog up roads & delay journeys than any modal filtering.
Ambulance on an emergency and it’s not possible for it to move in this traffic. The media never want to write about these delays & question if everyone being in their own car is causing serious congestion.
Of course Sadiq wins.
He’s on the right side of history with ULEZ.
Shame on those council leaders who tried and failed to stop progress. Money to burn.
Just as the weather was turning I found this bus stop. It’s on a bend on a 50 mph stretch of the road, no pavement or crossing to get to the other side where the pavement is. Wonder if these decisions are made by people who ever walk or use public transport?
Conservative Immigration minister really sorry about being caught speeding … again.
Driving to the speed limit isn’t taken seriously by those in power who set the rules.
A child will grow up without a mother because a man child was showing off how fast he could drive his big new car.
She must have been terrified for her life in those final minutes.
Tory MP banned from driving last year after ‘ being caught’ reaching speeds of 70+ mph in a 50 mph is campaigning to put barriers up to slow down people on push bikes.
They have no shame.
I went for a 10 mile run & got stranded in a snow storm 2 miles from my mum’s house. I found a cottage & was rescued by a woman, who turns out was 2 years above me at school back in Manchester & who’s brother was a very brief boyfriend of mine.
I don’t buy it when drivers say that they are allowed to use a handheld while sitting in traffic.
How come they always drop the phone like a hot potato when I knock on the window?
If you are on the road then you are driving. Keep your focus on what’s happening around you.
Is there anyone in government looking at UK road violence & the daily reports of dead people due to uncontrollable drivers & thinking f**k I should really do something about this?
Another Outer Hebridean observation is that islanders endure all kinds of harsh weather, have families & do shopping - in small cars. The roads are the same width as our residential roads minus the space lost to parking.
So why do so many people in London need massive cars?
