Four of the universities have/will appoint Presidents in the next year or two( Maynooth: UCC; UL; DCU). The HEA are asking them to include evidence for delivering gender equality as a key criterion for these appointments. This could help change the culture.

Most child care in most families is done by women… But eight men decide to restrict children and fail to put HEPA filters in schools. Sick children are likely to infect mothers and no boosters for 30s/40s til next year. Great eh??

Women’s ‘chance’ of a professoriate in Irish universities is now 1:15 and men’s 1:5. The under representation of women in these positions has implications both practically and symbolically. Hence the importance of this initiative. We need to change the system but this is a start
So the best paid civil servant solves an employees’ HR issue by having the tax payer pay E 180,000 pa? The content of the job is unclear but has been designed by the disaffected employee and has not been advertised. Minister knows nothing. Right??

Women’s ‘chance’ of a professorship in Irish universities varies between institutions- from 1:9 to 1:32 ( average1:15). If bearing children/caring/lack of ambition etc were the explanation one would not expect this. Men’s ‘chance’ at 1:5 varies little between universities
