Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has said that the Covid-19 curve has now been flattened and that there is no peak coming. This is as a result of all the hard work in communities and the measures that have saved "hundreds of lives", he said.
“New Zealanders are enjoying a near-normal, pre-coronavirus lifestyle, with no social distancing & spectators allowed at sports and cultural events, but with the border strictly controlled & all arrivals required to spend 14 days in quarantine.” 100 days & no new cases.
In my 40 years working as a journalist, I never recall news moving faster than it can be typed. I’m also proud of my colleagues, in RTÉ & the wider profession, for their work at this unprecedented time of crisis. The public has never needed to be more informed with key facts.
BBC News reports that a coronavirus vaccine developed by the University of Oxford appears safe and trains the immune system. Trials involving around 1,077 people showed the injection led to them making antibodies and white blood cells that can fight coronavirus.
Its been suggested to me by an experienced health service professional: Why not now give pharmacists the legal power to handle straightforward repeat prescriptions? Especially for older people, who are to be cocooned. And given GPs are so busy on COVID19 triage & test referral?
A salutary story. I only learned this evening that a friend I knew, was diagnosed very recently, with liver cancer, at the start of the week, no clear symptoms & died two days later. Be kind to the people you love. Have generosity & also understanding to those you disagree with.
URGENT: Covid-19. A ‘fake news’ circular is going around social media, citing a ‘specialist’ advising people not to use non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs like ibuprofen & difene as it exacerbates the virus. A senior HSE doctor says it’s a lie & evil. Do not recirculate it.
"I've said this since the beginning, if you focus on cases, contacts and clusters, if you focus on restricting the movement of those who are sick or their contacts then you don't have to restrict the movement of all of society", Dr Mike Ryan, WHO Executive Director

There are 97 patients with Covid-19 in ICU today, on Christmas Day. We think of them and their families at this time. And there are a further 185 patients in ICU today, with other conditions. A pause for thought 🙏
I’m getting endless scam calls with ‘fake’ Irish numbers from different counties & scam texts about parcels on the way, never ordered. Many other members of the public too. What are
@VodafoneIreland
doing about it?
No Covid-19 outbreaks have been reported linked to Cafés, Restaurants or public houses in the last two weeks, according to the latest data from the HPSC.
I got a message about 50 doctors who were leaving jobs in Perth this week to come back & work for the HSE They've found out their flights are cancelled (Emirates suspending all passenger flights after Wednesday). They're getting in touch with the Irish consulate in Perth for help
If we started today, and did Zero Covid right, we could be open by early summer, says Independent Scientific Advocacy Group (ISAG). “It now seems that there will be further lockdowns stretching into the summer and beyond. Each will further damage jobs, businesses, and lives.
Such kind words tonight from so many wonderful people. Twitter can be a special place. I know from others, it can be a hard space. But it should be a place for reasonable debate & criticism too. And a location for those who are in difficulty & lonely too. Be kind to eachother.
The Script have said that they will play a free concert for frontline & primary care health workers at Dublin's 3Arena next February. The show to honour those working with the HSE in the Republic & the NHS in Northern Ireland will take place on Tuesday, February 9, 2021.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has re-registered as a medical practitioner & will work 1 shift a week to help during the coronavirus crisis. He worked as a doctor for seven years, before leaving the profession to become a politician & was removed from the medical register in 2013.
I’ve got a warning on a scam text, purportedly from the HSE, asking people to confirm availability for vaccination, give PPS number, date-of-birth & address. Do not respond to it. Inform any elderly/vulnerable person you know. They will be contacted by their GP about vaccination.
☘️ Can I wish everyone a happy St Patrick’s Day, wherever they are. At home or abroad. And those who may be unwell, good tidings. We are in this together. The spirit of the Irish is legend. ☘️
I respect people on Twitter who identify themselves. Whether I agree or disagree with their views, I know who they are & read their messages. It’s part of listening. But others hide behind undisclosed motives, maybe a lack of conviction about their perspective, or other issues.
In all things in life, it is worth remembering that Albert Einstein said that insanity is doing the same thing, over & over again, and expecting different results.
We are nearly 2 years with Covid-19, there are people who still don’t believe the disease is real, view it as akin to a cold, think vaccines don’t work because some vaccinated still got infected. See people who were old or died with an underlying condition as going to die anyway.
I was talking to a Garda earlier today. There appears to be more traffic on the roads. Plus a few more people driving around & when stopped, saying they are off to work. They have a letter from their employer - but they also have three kids and a dog in the backseats !

Many thanks for the kind words tonight from so many people. You asked me about the future. I don’t know for sure, but bar a surprise & Covid has shocked before. All caveats in place, Ireland could potentially be in a good place by late February or early March.
I just got this from a friend:
“Social distancing totally out the window today in Dalkey, Sandycove, Dun Laoighaire and Killiney. Saw a very upset Garda - nobody listening a bit of sun! Disaster."
I just met an older man going into the Bank here beside the Dept of Health wearing a mask. He told me, he never thought he’d be walking into a bank with a mask on ! Time for a little chuckle.
Thank you, so much my friends. We have been on a long journey together, for sure. My words, since March 2020, on this pandemic, online, and on RTE Radio, TV & Online/Digital will stand the test of time.
Dr Gabriel Scally, professor of public health at the University of Bristol, has said here is "no doubt" in his mind that the Republic of Ireland is taking exactly the right course of action.
Researchers in Australia say they have mapped the body's immune response to the novel coronavirus, in a potential breakthrough in the fight against the global killer. The study is published in the journal, Nature Medicine.

If 30 children can be in one classroom, and only six people can attend an indoor social gathering, how many people can attend a wedding?
There are just 8 patients waiting today in emergency departments, for admission to a bed, in hospitals around the country, INMO data shows. Can’t think that has ever been seen before in the history of the Irish health service.
The Labour Party leader, Alan Kelly has called on the Government to publish a daily report on vaccination roll out numbers, along with a daily statement updating the Government’s vaccination procurement & implementation strategy, saying this was essential to give people hope.

Beware of this dangerous scam: Do not click on the link. If you get such a text. Delete the text but also alert family & friends to this - especially the elderly. This is not how the HSE would contact you, if you were a close contact.
For those who wondered, I have been an NUJ journalist for 40 years now. Aside from other spheres of media work, I have dealt with 15 different Ministers for Health, going back to Dr Rory O’ Hanlon in 1988. Stephen Donnelly will be the 16th Minister for Health I have dealt with.
“In Ireland, in the last 14 days over a third of new confirmed cases are in young people under the age of 35. This is not a disease that solely affects older people. No one is immune, everyone is responsible for limiting the spread of Covid-19,” Dr Tony Holohan, CMO.
Most journalists who have covered Covid-19 have been fearless, factual & done their best tell the public what is happening. In the end, it’s up to the public to make their mind up. We report facts, not tell people what to think.

The turf looks really good and cared for here at the Aviva. It will be great to see the rugby again soon, with people in attendance. But I’m not here for that. I’ve just received a Covid-19 first dose mRNA vaccine.
A guest at a reptile centre jumped into the enclosure to rescue a handler pulled in by an alligator.

There is a lot of fake news circulating today about a 14 day country lockdown, the army patrolling the streets, shops closing or being allowed limited opening hours. From what I can establish, it’s aimed at creating panic.
The HSE said it has procured an additional 300 ventilators, on top of the 500 it already has & has been assured of an additional 100 ventilators per week, going forward.
A message I have received: “Home carers are forgotten in this. We cannot stay away. We are obviously trying to take recommended precautions but I cannot leave my Dad alone. Carers should be regarded like frontline staff maybe get appointments (for COVID-19 tests) a bit quicker.”
It’s summer & will be a long winter. How about getting out in the nice air soon, for a brisk walk in the evening rain or sun. Twitter is not the be all & end all. How many people’s problems have ever been solved here, how many have been exacerbated? Think before you Tweet.
I have been contacted by a healthcare worker who is fully vaccinated since February. The healthcare worker got a CityWest appointment yesterday and tried to cancel. They got another text today saying they are on a standby list for tomorrow.
A number of older people reporting having received phonecalls for an appoinment available for a COVID-19 vaccine jab at a random hospital / not usually local hospital. When they say they can't travel they are asked for personal details like age and if they live alone. The caller
