In the last few days I've seen that three independent comic/book shops have announced their imminent closure. Well-run, well known, established shops owned, operated and curated by people who have put their heart and soul into the businesses.
There will be more.
This is a thread
Alright, so…
OK Comics has been open again for two weeks. Lots of people have been congratulating us on getting through the lock-down. People seem glad that we've 'survived'. Popular opinion is that we're through the worst of it.
The fact of the matter is...
The world has changed.
It's obvious the way people shop has changed. Even though stores are allowed to reopen, and people are allowed to visit us, it's our experience here at OK Comics that this just isn't happening.
It's one heartbreaking week after another.
I am physically, mentally and emotionally broken by today. The outpouring of support from the OK Comics customers has reduced me to tears. The generosity is unbelievable.
We're hoping to be open tomorrow.
We're hoping to be able to continue to mail stuff out.
You can still find OK Comics at 19 Thornton's Arcade, Briggate, Leeds, LS1 6LQ (open from 11am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) or open 24 hours online at , and you can email orders to shop
@okcomics
.co.uk
OK Comics will reopen on Mon 12th Apr.
We'll continue mail order for anybody who requires it.
Opening times will be 11am to 5pm, Mon to Sat.
We expect all visitors to the store to use face masks and hand sanitiser. We will be limiting access to three customers at a time.
It's no secret, times are tough all round. OK Comics isn't immune to the world's current financial woes.
Footfall in the city is down, for a variety of reasons, and this is really affecting how we run the shop from day to day...
The financial crisis is biting hard through these winter months, but we must continue to support the shops, restaurants, bars, cafe's, salons and boutiques that we love. You often never know how close your favourite store is to closure until it's too late.
If there is a business that you love, please show that love in a tangible way. You can do that by sending well wishes, thinking good thoughts, chatting about them online, leaving a positive review, mentioning them to friends...
If there is a small business you love, but you haven't visited for a while, maybe you should do it now.
Most shops have an online option, so you can get deliveries at home or work. Shipping is often cheaper than city centre parking.
...but nothing beats buying stuff from them.
If you have something on order with a shop, go buy it today. If there's a treat you're looking forward to, go buy it today. If you have a family member who has a birthday coming up, buy the gift today.
Just a reminder...
OK Comics has reopened!
We're here from 11am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
We've been receiving new releases through the whole lockdown, so we have plenty of stuff for you!
Bills that were on hold have now kicked in again.
For small, independent retailers, the second half of the year is going to be even tougher than the first.
Batman first appeared in issue 27 of Detective Comics in 1939. For the first 26 issues of its run it had been an anthology series of short crime tales.
The best-known character from these early, pre-superhero, stories is Slam Bradley.
If you don't use the shops you love now, they'll be gone too. My shop is OK Comics, it's a tiny independent book shop that specialises in comics and graphic novels. We've been going for 21 years and things have never been tougher.
Each time we look at the sales figures and footfall numbers I think maybe it'll be better next week. But it isn't.
Our government allowing us to do things doesn't mean people are happy or comfortable doing them.
New releases are expected to be weekly from now on, so if you need your stuff mailing out on a weekly basis, let us know.
The OK Comics website and webshop can be found at
OK Comics is a tiny little independent book shop in Leeds city centre, specialising in comics and graphic novels.
We're currently open from Monday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm, and we're receiving regular new releases and restock deliveries. And...
The streets of Leeds are mostly empty. People who usually work in the city centre, now work remotely. Shoppers who normally use the city centre are reluctant to use public transport and staying away.
If you have something on order with OK Comics, please pick it up now, or arrange to have it mailed out. If you're planning to buy a gift for somebody, maybe get it now. If there's a comic or book that you've had your eye on, feel free treat yourself it now.
If you can't get into the place in person, you'll probably find that most modern businesses are set up to deliver to you, many will have an online shop you can use. Our cities and towns are changing. If we don't continue to use them, they'll be unrecognisable.
Our awesome mail order customers who have been so supportive through our period of closure are now slowly going back to work themselves, and no longer have time to read so much.
I miss our customers. I miss sharing my enthusiasm for new books with people. The mail order service we offer is fantastic, but there is no substitute for browsing our actual store.
Looking for Sci-Fi Fantasy like Star Wars, Dune, or Saga?
This is already popping up on some ‘best of the year’ lists… It’s an intergalactic road movie of a comic, narrated by a naive young alien woman, with...
I'm often asked where the Pen Shop is (closed 11 years ago), or the chocolate shops (closed eight years), beer shop (five years), candle shop, bead shop, clothing boutique... all independent business neighbours here that have closed down.
Over the last couple of years,
@TomKingTK
has become one of OK Comics favourite writers. Vision, Mister Miracle, Strange Adventures, Rorschach... King is at his best when given freedom to work his magic on often overlooked side-characters.
Human Target begins next week.
OK Comics is OPEN.
We have thousands of graphic novels available on our upstairs sales floor. We keep the new releases on the ground floor for easy access!
We do loads of things you wont find elsewhere, like our social events, free lending library, exclusive signed editions, free graphic novels, occasional special offers and a permanent sale section etc
We took the lockdown time to make improvements to the shop. As far as I'm concerned, OK Comics is the best it's ever been, and we're still tweaking things, aiming to be even better.
Since Christmas six UK comic shops have reported that they're closing.
If you have a local comic shop that you love, spend a bit of money with them this weekend.
That little bit of cash you throw their way, that one comic you buy, may just prevent them from being next.
OK Comics is a tiny little book shop in Leeds specialising in comics and graphic novels.
I don't know what you want from a comic shop, but this is what we've got.
Open from 11am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.
Everything is available in store, or for delivery.
Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow by
@TomKingTK
@BilquisEvely
&
@_matlopes_
is one of our best-selling graphic novels EVER!
A beautifully illustrated science-fiction epic perfect for fans of Saga. It's a great introduction Kara Zor-El & the darkness inside her.
OK Comics has been NOMINATED FOR AN EISNER AWARD in the Spirit of Retail category.
Huge thanks to
@DanielleTute

and all the staff, customers, suppliers, family and friends who have supported us over these last twenty years!
OK Comics will be OPEN TO THE PUBLIC from 11am tomorrow! Monday 15th June!
In accordance with social distancing guidelines, we are limiting the amount of people we allow in the shop to ONE PERSON AT A TIME, and operating a policy of ONE IN, ONE OUT.

If you're in the area for Thought Bubble in Harrogate, we're not too far away. Why not pop in and have a look.
Times are tough all-round, and it's obvious the virus and lockdowns have hit lots of people in various ways. Many of our subscription customers have canceled their orders. Many people who used to visit us on their lunchbreak, or as they pass through Leeds, now work at home.
A thread.
If you're passing through Leeds on your way to Thought Bubble: The Yorkshire Comic Art Festival this weekend, you will be very close to OK Comics.
You should pop in and say hello.
Specially selected items are available on our new webshop, with new items being added every week.
If you can’t find what you need there, you can request delivery of all our comics and graphic novels by email. Shop

We give away ten graphic novels at the end of each three months. All you have to do is follow us on Facebook, twitter and Instagram and you could win gems like these.

In case you missed it.
The first five people through our door today will get a Comic Book recommendation from us for FREE! It's already been paid for by the extremely generous
@TomTaylorMade
.
Just mention Tom's name and we'll sort you out.
Lots of the larger businesses in the city centre have closed forever, so I guess there's less of an incentive to visit the high street. Some people are not comfortable using public transport.
Coming soon to OK Comics!
@danielwarrenart
's epic multi-dimensional wrestling tale Do a Powerbomb is one of our most anticipated releases this year! Thanks to Daniel, we also have exclusive signed bookplates!
Pre-order here...
I see another comic shop has been forced to close.
Independent shops don't have all the benefits that larger multinational stores do. They don't have the same discounts / buying power, or dodge paying tax.
Support your favourite local indie business TODAY before it's too late.
I'm hearing rumors that Collectors Universe is closing down. The Indian deli next door to us has definitely one out of business.
Use it or lose it folks.
If there's an indie shop, restaurant, salon, or business you love. Show them that love by buying something!

and
@_matlopes_
's sci-fi-fantasy masterclass, set in the DC universe, though no previous knowledge of DC Comics is required...
You may or may not know, we get most of our comics and graphic novels from Diamond Comics UK. They've always been absolutely fantastic to deal with, and they've been particularly good at rising to the challenges of the last two years.
Hey Barnsley!
You have a new comic shop!
Red Robot is located in The Arcade, right opposite Spiral City bar.
It specialises in graphic novels, artwork and back issues curated by Chris, a guy who really knows his stuff.
Very few comic artists are revered by other comic artists the way that
@xaimeh
is.
Queen of the Ring is a collection of his perfectly rendered, beautifully observed wrestling drawings from the last two decades.
Before Hellboy, there was this awesome
@artofmmignola
adaption of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Long out of print and available now in black and white with loads of pages of extras! "... and I shall love again".
Extremity is a science-fiction-fantasy, like Dune, Star Wars or Saga, it feels like a cross between Sons of Anarchy and Game of Thrones, in space!
Soon to be back-in-print as a beautiful deluxe hardcover, with a signed
@danielwarrenart
bookplate.
If you're passing through Leeds for Thought Bubble this weekend, feel free to pop into OK Comics to say hi.

We're down to our last few pre-orders...
I am loving
@TomKingTK
's Batman Catwoman series. He's experimenting with narrative structure in a way rarely seen in Superheroics, and using a rarely seen, but totally familiar, villain. Three issues in stock now. Get involved.
