The other solution that makes sense, and allows for fighters to be equal or superior to mages is to basically turn fighters into some type of superhuman being, either through secret knowledge, being inhabited by spirits or as the avatar/champion/descendant of a god, etc.

Some rules are stupid or are obviously inferior to changes that could be made. Here's 1e initiative: 1d6 for each side, high number goes first. Since a combat round has 10 segments, my group quickly changed this to 1d10, low roll wins.

Calling a fudged dice roll "a lie" is at the same level of conceptual clarity as calling fictional stories "lies." All RPGs are "lies." If you hate "lie", don't play them.
