Not only is our government supporting Israel's destruction of Gaza and its people, we actively discouraged any discussion of ending the bloodshed. Beyond belief.

Wapo: "A leaked State Dep't memo, confirmed by The Washington Post and first published by HuffPost, warned U.S. diplomats from using the phrases “de-escalation/ceasefire,” “end to violence/bloodshed” and “restoring calm” as the words did not comport with current U.S. policy."

This beautiful letter is worth reading in full. Exerpts: If calling for a future in which Palestinians can live in their homeland unshackled implies an existential threat to the Zionist ideology, it is that ideology that must be called into question — not the call for liberation.

When your grants get rejected, dont waste time being frustrated about what did not happen. There is no point, it is done. Just focus on the future. What did the reviews say and how can you explain your ideas better or get more data to make a stronger case. Words to live by.

Specifically it was the Israeli assault on Jenin in 2002 that got my attention. I then travelled around Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza to better inform myself. Here I am filming kids in Jenin in 2002:

Don’t think this is your issue? Yes it is: 1. I have heard from multiple junior scientists from the Middle East who are understandably afraid to say anything publicly,  who feel vulnerable. Speak out to support them. 2. The worldwide backlash against us will be long lasting.

Afraid you are not sufficiently informed? It is not that complicated. When is the destruction and expulsion of a people from their land ever ok? continued...

OK this site is awful. The substitution of pictures for headlines has put me over the edge. If someone has an invitation to the other place I would be grateful. Also if anyone has instructions for dummies on how to migrate I would be grateful for that as well. Thank you!

Don’t have time? Is that what you will say to a young person who asks you a few years from now: When your government was pulverizing Gaza and bombing and forcibly expelling hundreds of thousands of civilians, what did you do to stop it?

I had a conversation this morning with a beloved, kind, and thoughtful Israeli colleague who described their awful experience of the last 2 months and the sense of existential threat they feel. No one deserves to go through this. They also told me....

5. The functional selectivity of these brain regions does not suffer from a replicability crisis. Indeed, each functional localizer in each subject is a replication of the original finding.

You can watch and listen as the Nakba is apparently being livestreamed here: As Gazans sit in the dark with no phones, internet, water, or electricity, the only light comes from the bombs raining down on them. Your tax dollars at work.

Much of the apparent disagreement here results from people are talking about different brain regions. Many parietal and frontal regions are famously multi-function. In contrast, face patches in humans and monkeys (and other category-specific regions) are highly domain specific.

@DrYohanJohn Only if you define "modular" in the loose sense. Strict specificity is not supported by neurophysiology. "Motion/space" area LIP also does object categorization. "Color/shape" area V4 also does motion. Mixed selectivity neurons are all over cortex.

Exactly so @BevilConway . US support is enabling and our tax dollars are funding an extreme humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Call your reps now to demand conditionalization of US aid to Israel on a stop to bombardment of civilians and blockage from food water and electricity!

I’m on this platform for science, education, art, color, & career discussion. But I can’t be silent: We are witnessing a greater horror than any seen in real time in history. An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. We must condemn all violence, or humanity dies.
