At the al-Aqsa mosque, Palestinian youth gathered sponge rounds, tear gas canisters, and stun grenades that Israeli forces fired at them today and created a model of the Dome of the Rock. At the top, they wrote, لن تمروا -- "You will not pass."
For the first time in decades, Palestinians held a general strike throughout historic Palestine. At Damascus Gate in Jerusalem, peaceful protestors waving Palestinian flags and chanting for freedom were fired at with stun grenades and doused in shit-smelling liquid.

This war did not start this morning. It has been going on for decades.
Today's bloodshed is the tip of an iceberg: an iceberg of state violence and ethnic subjugation. Blood will continue to be spilled so long as we ignore the root causes.

US taxpayers are complicit in a system of apartheid, where Israel administers 90% of the land & leaves 10% as Palestinian enclaves of pseudo autonomy.
"Before we talk about what good the US can do, let's talk about how the US can stop doing harm."
A 53-year-old occupation is not "temporary."
The permanent occupation and the Israeli settlements are not somewhere "outside" Israel.
A state that denies basic civil rights to millions from one ethnic group is not a democracy. It's apartheid.
After the Union Club canceled my book talk in Frankfurt, offering no indication that they had even read the book, my friend
@yaffaesque
(the event's moderator) sent a letter to the club's president about the absurdity of this ostensible effort to protect Jews by censoring them:
Author
@nathanthrall
has just won a Pulitzer Prize for his book on the Israeli occupation, but he has repeatedly had events canceled in the U.S. and Germany. He says it's rooted in a fear of being labeled antisemitic for "entirely legitimate criticism of Israel."
"The US is giving $3.8bn per year to continue a situation in which millions of people are being deprived of basic civil & political rights based on their ethnicity. That is called apartheid. It's unacceptable that the US is giving a penny."

Two former Israeli ambassadors to South Africa: Both Israel & South Africa "concentrat[ed] the 'undesirable' population in as small an area as possible...driving these populations from their land & concentrating them into dense+fractured pockets...Such a reality is...apartheid."

I talked to
@nybooks
about my piece, the two-state solution, working for Bob Silvers, and American responsibility for deep injustice:
"Today’s reality in Israel-Palestine is at odds with everything the United States claims to stand for.”
On Nakba Day, every US taxpayer should read this piece: "If it is wrong to hold Palestinians as non-citizens under military law, & wrong to impose a blockade that denies them the necessities of life, it is surely also wrong to expel them and prevent them from returning home."
We can't understand what Israel is doing in Jerusalem--expelling Palestinians to create a Jewish city--without understanding how Israel was born: By expelling Palestinians to create a Jewish state. Until Jews face the Nakba, the Nakba will never end
The former director general of Israel's foreign ministry, who was also ambassador to apartheid South Africa: Trump and Netanyahu are seeking to make "permanent the domination of one ethnic or religious group over another" and "legitimize a new 21st-century model of apartheid."
Attempts to whitewash an oppressive regime by creating fictitious autonomous states inhabited by subjects who have no real political rights did not work in South Africa and they will not work elsewhere, writes Israel's former ambassador to South Africa.
Why did the people of Flint, Michigan, one of the poorest cities in the US, die as a result of a decision to save $5 million while the US was spending *billions* to support apartheid in Israel, where per-capita income is 1.5 times higher than in Flint?
Editor-in-chief,
@haaretzcom
: "The 1948 story isn’t summarized by the argument of 'fled or were expelled,' but with the decision to prevent the refugees’ return and to confiscate their land for Jewish towns and villages....This is the heart of the matter."

Part 2, I spoke about my recent
@nybooks
piece and how Israel uses the same justification for taking over Palestinian homes in Sheikh Jarrah, land in the West Bank, and villages in pre-67 Israel: "What do you want, this is a Jewish state."
Until now, the Israeli left claimed that Israel is a democracy running a "separate regime" of apartheid in the occupied territory. Today,
@btselem
broke the mold, finding that there is one apartheid regime. To understand why, read more in the next
@LRB

In a powerful, groundbreaking new paper, Israel's leading human rights organization
@btselem
finds the idea that Israel is separate from its 53-year occupation is "divorced from reality." There is one sovereign apartheid regime between the river & the sea:
.
@HRW
: In the West Bank, Israeli apartheid includes "severe repression" and "the imposition of draconian military rule on Palestinians while affording Jewish Israelis living in a segregated manner in the same territory their full rights under Israel’s rights-respecting civil law"
Martin Luther King was "clear that the fight for racial justice at home was indivisible from the struggle for human rights abroad," writes
@JeanneTheoharis

As I wrote for
@NYTmag
last year, the Democratic party is changing. One of the only foreign policy issues highlighted in the latest
@BernieSanders
campaign ad is Palestinian human rights.
Blue and White, the main challenger to Netanyahu's left: annexing the Jordan Valley, seizing nearly thirty percent of the West Bank, and territorially encircling millions of West Bank Palestinians so that they can never have a border with Jordan...that was our idea first.
In today's
@NYTmag
, I wrote about BDS, the framing of Palestinian rights as a racial justice issue, pro-Israel legislation that stifles free speech, the Democratic establishment versus the base, and the influence of mega donors on US policy toward Israel.
.
@HRW
found that Israel's "policy is to maintain the domination by Jewish Israelis over Palestinians across Israel and the occupied territory." 2/9

Imagine the US and UK -- two countries that supposedly share values with Israel -- advancing government plans to expand white Christian towns in majority non-white, non-Christian regions in an official attempt to whiten and Christianize them.
Palestinian unity is a threat to the two-state solution, which is a proposal to divide Palestinians while keeping Israeli Jews united. But why does the international community believe Palestinians have less right to live as one people than Israeli Jews do?
The Palestinian uprising has exposed Western discourse on the conflict as so many myths. This is not a conflict between two states, it’s a domestic conflict between two peoples. And Israel is not at risk of becoming an apartheid state — it already is one.
In 1979, the Settlement Division of the World Zionist Organization released a master plan for West Bank settlements that was designed to prevent a Palestinian state. Trump tweaked that map and called it a two-state solution.
From formally annexed Sheikh Jarrah to de facto annexed Beit El to conquered Jaffa, the process is the same: backed by the state, the dominating group, Jews, takes over the land and replaces the dominated population, Palestinians.
#Apartheid
The definition of hypocrisy: a US president supplying the arms that are killing thousands of civilians in Gaza while saying "There are a lot of innocent people who are starving, a lot of innocent people who are in trouble and dying, and it's gotta stop."
Had the pleasure of speaking to David Green for this weekend's
@haaretzcom
about the war in Gaza, the delusions of American diplomacy, and whether October 7th has made Israelis rethink the costs of controlling Palestinian lives indefinitely.
50 former foreign ministers & European leaders: Trump's plan formalizes "the current reality in the occupied Palestinian territory, in which two peoples are living side by side without equal rights. Such an outcome has characteristics similar to apartheid"
For MLK & Rosa Parks, "the fight for racial justice at home was indivisible from the struggle for human rights abroad." Picketing the embassy of apartheid South Africa, Rosa Parks said, “I am concerned about any discrimination or denial of any people regardless of their race.”3/3
"In fact, the great majority of those who are so contemptuous of Ben-Gvir live very well with an Israel of Jewish supremacy – they just don’t, heaven forbid, shout it from the rooftops."
@HagaiElAd
Refreshing to see that only days after releasing the Trump plan, one of its chief architects,
@GreenblattJD
, has come around to opposing approaches that are 1-sided, distorted, dangerous to US allies, & designed to drive Palestinians (who deserve better) into a ditch.
A 1-sided, distorted analysis. The ideas are dangerous to an important ally, based on an approach that has driven Palestinians (who deserve a better future) into a ditch. Time to embrace reality, seek a brighter future & stop being an arm-chair critic.
