Me as a grad student:
….How can my PI forget the experiments he literally just asked me to do?
Me as a PI:
Oh….
Oh….I see now…
….wait what were we taking about again?
I didn’t obtain my PhD until I was 32.
I didn’t have any kids until I was 36.
I started my dream job at 38.
The quickest path is not necessarily the best path. So grateful for all of my experiences.
I didn`t obtain my PhD until I was 35.
I didn`t have my kids until I was 37.
I didn`t start running until I was 30.
At 20, I thought my life was over.
At 42 I know it`s just the beginning.
Keep running. Never give up. Rich, you are such an inspiration.👟
I think it’s finally time to announce that I’ll be starting as an Assistant Professor in Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of San Diego starting fall 2021! I am so excited to join such an amazing community!
@USDNeuroscience
@uofsandiego
I am thrilled for the publication of my postdoc work today in
@ScienceMagazine
-This is a dream come true-4 yrs of work elucidating distinct Anterior Cingulate neural circuits mediating the social transfer of pain/analgesia & fear

@StanfordMed
Being a female junior faculty is just really, really hard sometimes. Today is one of those days….I know my male colleagues do not get spoken to this way- 😑
When I started my postdoc at Stanford in 2016, I was paid $50k/year. Sound like a living wage? I paid 2k/month rent for a 230sqft studio apartment and delivered groceries for instacart and watched dogs with Rover to pay my bills….with a PhD in neuroscience. 1/

FIVE tenure track teaching positions open at UCSD! All bio areas considered. It’s a pretty sweet gig imo and you get to live by the beach 🏝️ and most importantly…me! Just ask
@analog_ashley
@ucsdbiosciences
I am beside myself and so grateful to be announced as a Sanford Empathy and Compassion Professor. This endowed chair position will provide so many opportunities for the Smith Lab. Thank you
@UCSDCompassion
I could really use a win. I start my first week as a tenure track professor next week. I feel anxious & unprepared, mostly because COVID & we still don’t have childcare sorted for our baby. & today, I woke up to a grant rejection.

Am I doing it wrong? I spend most of my time on mentoring, people management, administrative tasks, and service (mostly meetings and paperwork. This spring it’ll mostly be teaching. I find very little time to read or think anymore
#newpi
A student recently asked me: how do you spend your time? (assuming you are not spending 30 hrs/week writing grants). indeed I don't spend much time on grants. I spend a lot of time studying, both because I'm too ignorant and because I can't learn as quickly as I used to
1/5: Today, we are thrilled to announce the appointment of
@UCSanDiego
faculty members — Monique Smith, PhD (
@MoeNeuro
) &
@FadelZeidan
, PhD — as the recipients of the Sanford Institute's Endowed Professorships in Empathy and Compassion Research. 🎉
Big meta-analytic findings!!! The GRE’s ability to predict graduate outcomes has decreased significantly over time as the diversity of graduate students has increased. Predictive value also decreases as samples include more People of Color.
@MauGarcia5050
I was rejected my first time too- I’m first gen, didnt have research experience until my super senior year. Fast forward 10 years and I have a PhD from OHSU, a postdoc at Stanford, a SCIENCE paper and a TT faculty job starting in fall.
And maybe this lost income is okay for many, who have support from family or partners. Who have a buffer of privilege. But what about low income, underserved and

trainees? When do the [financial, emotional, personal] costs outweigh the glory of pursing science?
Super excited to announce that the Smith Lab has its very first graduate student!! Welcome
@Jie_Neuro
we are so thrilled and grateful to have you on the team! Thank you for allowing me to join you on your PhD journey 🐭♥️
No matter the stress of academia, leaving work at 4pm on a Friday to hang in La Jolla with the fam makes up for it. So grateful to be at

@Momademia
🚨🐭 SO EXCITED to reveal the brand new Smith Lab WEBSITE! It has been such a fun process to see my vision come to life- & to work with non-scientist designers to create something so beautiful.
Something that’s been persistently bothering me lately- the glorification & “you go, mama” attitude in response to toxic academic environment/culture for new mothers. This is not okay- No one should have to work immediately after giving birth or teach while wearing a newborn. 1/
Excited to share our new paper!
Nonlinear paths are often taken by women, caregivers & those from low socioecon backgrounds-many funding requirements are in conflict with the goals to improve diverse representation.

I think the extensions are BS anyway- I don’t want to extend the amount of time I make less money, prolong time until sabbatical. I don’t want to lose more time, I’ve lost enough. It’s past time to start talking about how universities can better support us-
All that I can do is be honest with my trainees about the reality of these choices and about my reality coming from low income and as a

and hope that I can make substantive changes for the better.
I’m shook- my lab surprised me with balloons, a corkboard of lab pictures and individual handwritten letters for my birthday! I AM SO LUCK. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making every day worth it Smith Lab! 😭🥹♥️
So PROUD of my grad student
@Jie_Neuro
for her incredible presentation at Neuro Dinner tonight in front of ~60 people! Only a second year grad student and I feel like she could defend a thesis!

Exciting deliveries for the Smith Lab!!!

I’m also dealing with the other side- NIH budgets haven’t increased in 20yrs and I was told that if I want to pay a research assistant more than $18/hr (in SAN DIEGO) I have to get “special approval.”
Phew, really pushed that grant submission til the last minute. Proud that I got it submitted despite childcare issues, family health problems, and teaching 2 courses! Couldn't have done it without the support and encouragement from
@LeadingEdgeSymp
fellows

@Momademia
Like so many, my worst nightmare came true this Christmas. My antivax family resisted taking tests on Christmas before seeing each other-but I was INSISTENT-they finally agreed. I paid for the tests- Christmas morn everyone was negative. The next day my sister became ill- Covid+
Happy Friday! We just got news that the Smith Labs very first paper is accepted and scheduled for publication! Thank you to first author
@dr_brein
and all of the fantastic undergrads (look out for their upcoming PhD apps!)
Stay tuned 📺

1️⃣ Monique Smith (

) from
@ucsdbiosciences
@UCSDNeuro
for her animal work on "anterior cingulate inputs to nucleus accumbens control the
social transfer of pain and analgesia" 🐁🧠⚡
Just finished writing a grant that I feel pretty proud of! (At least until I get reviewer responses to make me feel otherwise 🙃)
I am especially proud considering the end of semester timing and various life events that nearly derailed me.
@Momademia
@AcademicMomLife
I have conversations with my trainees about the reality of the amount of lost income that they will incur if they choose this path. Realities that I was not truly aware of.
Ahhh 🧵 coming 2morrow! The 1st Smith Lab research paper! (Co-Last corresponding, but still!) So proud & thankful for
@dr_brein
Cali, Sabrena,

@TheBorisLab
and of course, the one & only Rob Malenka.
Thrilled to share that my postdoc work from the Malenka lab is out today!
Of course, this work will not be complete until it’s communicated. Short video summary coming soon

I am a PhD neuroscientist who also:
- grew up on welfare
- lived in a trailer park
& who:
- was a 1st gen college student
- took 5 years to get a BA & 4 years to get a MA before getting a PhD
- was a college sorority president
- is blond, tattooed, & still says “like” a lot
I'm an ecologist & an education researcher who:
- grew up on welfare
- lived in a trailer park
- had parents tell me that I'm too lazy to amount to anything
- joined the military instead of college due to poor grades in HS
- sang in a punk band
- won a SLAM poetry competition
@DanielBolnick
When i put myself in the PI position, these sound like great ideas for accountability, BUT thinking as a trainee I find that a lot of these feel like ‘micromanaging.’ Some weeks in grad school I wouldn’t have had anything to report, and would have resented this.
Eek thank you! As a
#firstgen
college student who grew up poor with a single mom- I could have never imagined being here. Thank you to all who have believed in me and supported me- including my amazing trainees who make everyday brighter-
@Jie_Neuro
@parnazboroon
& more
My undergrad GPA was a 3.4. I had professors refuse to write a letter of recommendation and many discouraged me from applying to grad school. I never got great test scores (SAT or GRE).
Look at me now 💥
So inspired by the
@LeadingEdgeSymp
Keynote by
@BerondaM
. Thank you for the laughs and tears and motivation to forge ahead to change the academy for the better
Alright y'all - we are just a few days away from
@SfNtweets
!! Check out what the Smith Lab will be up to and come say hi! Also- WE ARE HIRING! If you are looking for a Postdoc or lab manager position, please reach out! Let's talk!
So nice to hang with the one and only
@CterminiPhD
today!! I know you rocked that Keynote address! Leading edge fellows are truly the best!
@LeadingEdgeSymp
@DrCherylOng
There should definitely be an extension for this. This makes me sad (I have a young baby), because we should all have time with our newborns without worrying about work. And I really don’t like that this is normalized or glorified (not that this was your intent- but generally)
If you’re a junior scientist who finally got that win, please please tweet about it. Celebrating awesome people and their victories is hands-down my favorite part of twitter.
So much this 👇🏻👇🏻
sometimes I don’t even realize or admit to even myself or others that this is true. I’m plagued by feelings of laziness/shame/guilt over how much migraines take away from my life and productivity. The trivialization of migraine needs to stop.
@MarissaScavuzzo
While impressive, I hate that any one has to “tough it out” in this way in order to conform to toxic academic work culture. I hope you feel better and get all the deserved time to take care of yourself before and after baby!
Not to mention- my career is still being subsidized by my non-academic partner. Without him, my income would not even qualify for a 2bd apartment on my own in San Diego.
“Sloan fellowships “honor extraordinary U.S. and Canadian researchers whose creativity, innovation, and research accomplishments make them stand out as the next generation of leaders.” 🥹🥰🫣
Thanks for featuring us in

! Sloan Research Fellows are among the most innovative young scientists in the US and Canada and must be nominated by their colleagues.
#SloanFellow
I can’t even list all the reasons with 240 characters! 1) dedication to training the next generation of scientists 2) loving being able to share what I love and seeing someone love it for the first time 3) making a huge impact on people’s lives 4) someone took a chance on me
So excited to welcome the Trotter Lab to UCSD! He’s recruiting at all levels! If you’re interested in astrocytes- consider applying! Great mentor, great science and even better neighbors 🤪
@jhowardtrotter
This
#SfN
was full of the highest highs and lowest lows for me- in the middle of SfN and the day before my daughters 2nd bday, my grandma (GG) passed away. She was an unstoppable force & my biggest fan & I miss her. Please everyone keep doing cool science for her, she loved it!
“Listen to all the advice, but only use the ones that sit right with you “
Honestly this his whole blog is the closest thing to the truth I’ve encountered about becoming a PI.
Great start to the weekin the Smith Lab! Grad student
@Jie_Neuro
has some AMAZING new data and rotation student
@nikki_keisler
got on the the

NIH T32 training grant!
I’m giving the baby the last of the frozen breastmilk with my vaccine antibodies as a last ditch effort to try and protect her. Please please let her stay COVID negative.
