Very sorry to hear of the death of Vladimir (Vlado) Gligorov, the perceptive economist and political scientist from North Macedonia, at the age of 77. Never infected by irrational nationalism, a sober analyst of ex-Yugoslavia with an unexpectedly mischievous sense of humour. RIP

Northern Ireland census results are out. Catholics are more numerous than protestants for the first time. 45.7%/43.5%. A huge symbolic moment. The most astonishing statistic is the drop over 10 yrs of those who describe themselves as only British: from 40% to 30%. Major shift.

It’s taken 13 years since my prediction in #McMafia that the oligarchy in Transnistria would get Sheriff Tiraspol into the Champions League Group Stage. A quick trip up the road to Kyiv for the Shakhtar tie followed by trips to San Siro and the Bernabeu. #ChampionsLeaguedraw

Meanwhile in Afghanistan... tens of thousands seeking refuge; five million children facing famine; 500% increase in child marriages; children being sold to feed families... Not a mention of it. My god, they must be wondering what makes their humanitarian crisis so unimportant.

This is the constituency map Germans are waking up to. SPD dominance in the north, conservatives in the industrial south, dots of Green in some cities, and a very AfD-blue Saxony after the CDU slumped there.

History lesson: In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, & they lost it all - security, comfort, & freedom. When the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free. Edward Gibbon

The EU must not drop its commitment to admitting the Western Balkans into the Union. Here is an op-ed I wrote with Cathy Ashton, Mark Medish, Alex Rondos and @IVejvoda in advance of the EU Western Balkan summit in Slovenia.

@TanjaBueltmann It’s not just the headline - the whole article suggests very strongly that this is all down to vindictive, Kafkaesque bureaucracies in Europe. Nope - our government voluntarily gave up all our rights in Europe.

Its official – #Prague is top in public transport: fantastic tram system, sleek metro, plus buses. You rarely need to use (or buy) a car. It only needs a progressive council that has the courage to impose a congestion charge, build bike lanes etc.
