Just got through immigration at Barcelona - 5 mins wait with my Irish passport. Non-EU passports including UK, minimum one hour queuing. Brits are going to start their summer hols with one hell of a shock this year.

Utterly shocking news - Matthew Hedges jailed for life by a court in the UAE. 5 minute hearing. No lawyer present. Jeremy Hunt’s appeals to UAE ignored. These are the people that Liam Fox and his ilk want to strengthen ties with after Brexit. A disgrace.
#McMafia
Hello everyone, as the author of McMafia, the book, and an Executive Producer on the TV show, let me tell you reports in the Sun and the Mail that the BBC has dropped the show are in fact, to use a technical term, ‘complete bollocks’. Very much on track for Season 2.
Serious cracks appearing between Putin and Min Def, and with Security Services. If anyone knows this man
@AndreiSoldatov
does - I strongly recommend you follow him and

if you don’t already.
Putin appears to be truly unhappy with the FSB in Ukraine: he attacked the 5 Service SOiMS (FSB's foreign Intelligence branch). Sergei Beseda, head of the Service, and his deputy Bolukh, head of the DOI, placed under house arrest, according to my sources inside.
Jeremy Hunt casually saying that Slovenia was a “Soviet vassal state”. Former president of Slovenia saying, “he comes to Slovenia asking us for a favour [to discuss how to avoid a no-deal] while arrogantly insulting us. We were never a vassal state” 🇪🇺
The Reinvention of

into one of the few journalists holding the UK government to account is one of the most unexpected consequences of Covid in this country. That senior cabinet ministers will no longer subject themselves to his questions is a badge of honour.
No, JRM. Being furious the Prime Minister may have broken the law by holding gatherings when people couldn’t visit loved ones - even when they were dying - is not “fluff” “trivial” and “nonsense” and saying this is a total outrage.
As Publicity Manager of Verso when IC was published, no book led to as much discussion and praise from academic and general constituencies.Nor have I seen any book quoted as often as IC across so many disciplines in my reading ever since. And Ben was such a decent thoughtful man.
Benedict Anderson’s, “Imagined Communities,” was published 40 years ago in 1983. Given the current times, a bit surprising that not much has been written, as far as I know, on the fortieth anniversary of the book.
After reading this threat, the idea of replacing the management of the UK’s private water companies each with a colony of beavers begins to look like a rational choice.
A single beaver pond holds an estimated 1.1 million gallons of water and recharges underlying aquifers with an even greater amount of water.
Upon European arrival to North America, as many as 65 million beaver dams strung together waterways and hydrated landscapes.
A trenchant and resolutely correct assessment from Timothy Garton Ash - what is happening in Poland represents a major challenge to the EU. Let’s hope the Commission and other EU institutions finally wake up to confront this threat.
1. This is a crucial moment for Polish democracy. If likely upper house rejection of

This is critical - the second phase of Milosevic’s downfall in October 2000 was when public and private sector workers went on strike. Final phase was the security forces (police, army and special forces) visibly scaling down their intervention against the street protests.
Minsk metro workers have walked off the job, joining thousands of workers striking at state enterprises across the country and showing support for the protests.
This is terrific. The cartel in three Rio favelas imposes a curfew to prevent the spread of Covid, specifically citing the state’s total indifference and incompetence in matters of public health. ‘Anyone seen in the street after 8pm will learn to respect the curfew next time.'
There are 23 stories on the front page of the BBC News website. 23 are about the death of the Queen. I get the seismic nature of the event, but Russia is on the brink of the biggest military defeat in 80 years. On our continent. And nothing.
Shakespeare reacts:
Now does he feel
His secret murders sticking on his hands.
Now minutely revolts upbraid his faith-breach.
Those he commands move only in command,
Nothing in love. Now does he feel his title
Hang loose about him, like a giant’s robe
Upon a dwarfish thief.

I cannot believe that the government of the Czech Republic whose people know exactly what it means to be enthralled by an intolerant dictatorship can pursue this policy.
I don’t usually post MUST READs but this piece by

We have seen several sober analyses from unquestionably serious thinkers like

that we run a real risk of a reemergence of fascism. Centre right, Centrists, Social Democrats and the Left need to study the sectarian politics of Germany 1930-33 to avoid the role of midwife.

Worth remembering that life in Taiwan is normal - zero Covid. Why? Because difficult decisions based on scientific evidence were taken early. Above all - strict quarantine for anybody entering the country and rigorous test and trace.
It’s more than baffling, Simon, it’s immoral and disgraceful. The BMJ head argued forcefully on Newsnight last night the failure to roll out tests means thousands of NHS frontline staff in quarantine unnecessarily. The great majority not ill but cannot risk working unless tested.
Good letter to

Over the past two decades,
@PrivateEyeNews
has been THE journal of record on corruption, money-laundering, UK government malfeasance. It is our indispensable guide in combatting the many crimes of the rich and powerful. It is also VERY funny. Triples all round to its team!
9 years after the Eye exposed rampant Russian money-laundering in London and 6 years since we revealed the scale of anonymous offshore ownership of UK property, it takes a war to finally make the government take action. Full story in the brand new Private Eye, out today.
This version of war booty was first modelled in Yugoslavia, notably by Arkan and other organised crime figures who provided additional military capacity in exchange for appropriated goods and land. The state sanctions it.
Russians opened a market in Belarus where they sell things they stole from Ukrainian homes, including dishwashers, bicycles, carpets, etc. All this is taken to Belarus in a centralized manner, via Russian trucks. Some things are also shipped to Russia. This is beyond me
The Czech Public Prosecutor has charged former Prime Minister, Andrej Babis, with embezzlement of €2 millions in relation to EU subsidies which Babis allegedly diverted into his Stork's Nest spa and wellness centre.

The video games industry where Britain is currently a world leader would collapse within a year or two. Dominated by EU labour - average starting salary between £20-22k.

Ursula von der Leyen has just told the European Parliament that the European Commission will open proceedings against Hungary for violating the rule of law. Budapest could lose 100% of its European subsidies. The main problem: Corruption and embezzlement of EU funds.

Whenever Hungary has become involved in a war or taken sides in the last 150 years, it has always been on the losing side. Hopefully this rule of thumb will continue to apply.
Übrigens: Wann immer Ungarn in den letzten 150 Jahren in einen militärischen Konflikt verwickelt war oder Partei ergriffen hat, war's die Verliererseite... Hoffentlich bewahrheitet sich die Faustregel weiter.

You’ve got to admire Jean-Paul Satre. He identified hell as being ‘other people at breakfast’, yet he’d never been to Stansted Airport on a Friday morning. As the holidays are now over, I guess this must only be the 1st or 2nd circle.
This is a fascinating story. Has the PM inadvertently blurted out a future 'barrage'? Or does he not have a grasp of his brief? 🤔Could be either or both.

Morally it makes no difference in the end but I think Putin actually believes some of his nonsense about Russia and Ukraine. Milosevic didn’t give a toss about Serbian nationalist mythology except as a tool to faciliate his path to power and then consolidate it.

Northern Ireland census results are out. Catholics are more numerous than protestants for the first time. 45.7%/43.5%. A huge symbolic moment. The most astonishing statistic is the drop over 10 yrs of those who describe themselves as only British: from 40% to 30%. Major shift.

This is the constituency map Germans are waking up to. SPD dominance in the north, conservatives in the industrial south, dots of Green in some cities, and a very AfD-blue Saxony after the CDU slumped there.
History lesson: In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, & they lost it all - security, comfort, & freedom. When the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free. Edward Gibbon
