Putin appears to be truly unhappy with the FSB in Ukraine: he attacked the 5 Service SOiMS (FSB's foreign Intelligence branch). Sergei Beseda, head of the Service, and his deputy Bolukh, head of the DOI, placed under house arrest, according to my sources inside.

Now it's official - Kommersant confirmed Gavrilov resigned (his detention is yet to be confirmed). Putin humiliated the director of the SVR, placed two FSB generals under house arrest and had Zolotov, the National Guard, to fire his deputy -- in the three weeks of the war.

Boris Johnson makes Evgeny Lebedev - son of a Russian oligarch and former KGB intel operative in London - a lord. Quite an achievement for a compatriot. Read a chapter from our book The Compatriots about Lebedev Sr’ tricky relationship with the Kremlin.

Memorial, Russia's oldest human rights org, is no more. 2021 ends with one last hammer blow to Russian civil society. My report from the Supreme Court today, with comment from those who founded Memorial in Perestroika, and saw it destroyed under Putin.
