15 yrs ago today, I fell out of a car, broke 28 bones + had a stroke. 2 years in hospital. Everything changed for me, forever. THANK YOU to all people who saved me - surgeons, nurses, doctors, anaesthetists + people who gave blood - 24 pints of which I used in first week...
19 years since I totalled myself. No great sage advice if you’re facing something catastrophic. All you can do is keep going. MLK puts it better “If you can’t fly, run, if you can’t run, walk, if you can’t walk, crawl. But whatever you do, just keep moving forward”.
I am very much not leaving The Guardian, but I will now be contributing occasionally to Unherd. This is my first piece for them: Why I Stopped Being a Good Girl
I have never heard so much freaking fuss over working on a Saturday- nurses, doctors, policemen, firemen, most of retail, cleaners, transport workers, most entrepreneurs- reckon some of them might fancy a Saturday off...
I’ve just had more major surgery and my legendary father has come to see how I am… he will not stop talking so I told him he has to be silent for 15 mins. (Pic 1) he managed 8 mins (pic 2)
+ hello everyone, I’m the new chair of this select committee- the first to be started digital first I think... please follow us as we’re going to need ur input to our work pls + we want to reach the parts other select committees cannot reach :-)

I’m in hospital again. Thought I’d share what I’m trying to live by rn ““If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” MLK.
Unbelievable day on scafell pike - in v Bad weather and a v tough climb too hard even

Wow - thank you - genuinely surprised (+ not just in a Hollywood Oscar acceptance speech way) but mainly cos I feel I’m only just getting going - there’s so much to use all your might to try + improve in our world - Sustainability, diversity, responsibility.... 🤯
V interesting piece in FT . In Vo in Italy, small town at centre of storm, they tested every single inhabitant. 3% infected. Isolated them and rate dropped at next testing to .03 including 6 people who showed No symptoms but had the virus. No more virus. TEST TEST TEST...

How to survive going back to hospital for another unexpected operation part 70009. Find some sunshine, look at some flowers, take several mental pics and keep breathing… (bengal cats optional)
I learnt a brilliant new expression yesterday- BLACK ELEPHANT - things that we know are going to have massive repercussions but we still don’t deal with (with a hat tip to black swans and white elephants) I would argue climate change and digitisation are 2 in that category?
I just spent day at HMP Send presiding over

ceremony for 2 v special students - thank you to all amazing inmates and staff there who made it so meaningful - mostly I’m so impressed by dedication of our students even in the most complex and difficult situations

Some big news to share today. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is part of a consortium that has secured over £78 million in government funding to give every child in every school in England a world-leading computing education:
I’ve spent a massive amount of time in hospital in the last month and I am still staggered by the amount of physical paper that nurses, administrators and clinicians have to navigate - i know I’m a cracked record but there are huge gains for patients and staff if this improves

last night - absolutely beautiful - no way kenneth Branagh could have known how relevant it would become but in the current climate, it’s even more devastating - highly recommend it

Doesnt seem to me to matter a jot whether I have “sympathy” for Shamima Begum (law is above sympathy) She’s a uk citizen & was 15 ffs when she went off to join ISIS. Trying to deprive her of uk citizenship can’t surely be right/legal and (let’s hope) can’t end well for Home Sec.
