Google is rolling out SGE for everyone.
I spent 50+ hours exploring the new Search Generative Experience.
Here’s what I found to prepare for the future of search:
@twostraws
Maybe because we Europeans have
a) a healthcare system that does not encourage people to take 1000 Ibuprofen in 18 months, and
b) walkable cities so that we can just buy Ibuprofen whenever we need it?
5 days ago, Google rolled out a significant change to its ranking algorithm.
The May 2022 Core Update is a blessing🍾 for some and a bane🤕 for others.
I dug into the data from
@SEMrush
and
@sistrix
to understand what happened.
🧵👇
In 2020, I joined idealo as Head of SEO.
Since then we were the largest winner of the July 2021 Core Update and the 2nd-largest winner of SEO Visibility in Germany in 2021 according to Sistrix.
Here is what I believe makes a great Head of SEO. 🧵
Over the last 9 months we’ve deleted close to 80% of the marketing footprint off .
Tens of thousands of pages.
The result is that traffic, conversion and all our experience and NPS metrics are up.
It was a gross project but I’ll tell you about it.
@arvidkahl
But the Michelin Guide was not unrelated when it started.
It was an activation campaign to make customers use the product (car/tires) by giving them a reason to drive somewhere.
In 2022 I was a top 0.5% user of Webmaster Exchange - the webmaster version of Stack Overflow - by answering SEO questions.
Here are my most well-received answers to common SEO questions 🧵👇
Heart surgeons use checklists. ☑️
Pilots use checklist. ☑️
SEOs … log into Search Console and fire up ScreamingFrog, hoping they will notice something? 🤨
SGE is terrible for Google's revenue.
The purpose of SGE is to demonstrate to shareholders and employees that Google is still innovative.
Publicly stating "SGE is an experiment" is step 1 to rolling it back.
GPT-3 just killed HARO.
A Chrome extension using GPT-3 to reply to Haro requests. Every reporter using HARO will be spammed by SEOs till their inbox is overflowing.
SEOs have butchered guest blogging - a once great marketing tactic - to a degree where it is now almost synonymous with pure spam.
Sad.
Do you still include guest blogging in your SEO?
/r/SEO, one of the largest SEO communities in the world with 250,000+ members has been taken over by a group of 6-24 month-old, anonymous accounts that run a network of silver, crypto, and investment communities.
What could possibly go wrong?
Based on the 100 largest losers and 100 largest winners, I observed 3 major trends.
1️⃣ Video instead of text
2️⃣ Specialists instead of generalists
3️⃣ Better search intent matching

Not sure who needs to hear this, but SEO IS NOT:
• possible with bad content
• a fix for delivering bad UX
• profitable within 30 days
SEO IS a continuous process that should be baked into your product strategy
Hat-tip to whoever is managing the
@semrush
Reddit account.
Recommending a prospect to learn about SEO before purchasing SEMrush - or another SEO tool - is awesome! 👏👏👏
In the leaked Yandex source code, there were 40+ quality-related ranking factors.
There are mainly divided into quality of:
• host
• page
• text
Let's dive in 🧵👇

It takes 1 second to fart. But 10 seconds for your coworkers to smell it.
SEO is the same. The results of today’s work will only become visible in the coming weeks and months.
@OmarRiverosays
This is not true.
The rate limits implemented by Musk prevent Google from Crawling the website.
Instead of showing the Google Bot tweets and user profiles, Musk is serving them error pages
When Google sees an error page, they no longer rank the site.
You’re on your deathbed surrounded by family.
You’re old, and you’ve lived a wonderful life as a successful SEO.
Your grandson hands you a smartphone and asks you to Tweet a timeless piece of SEO advice.
What do you tweet? 😂
Not sure who needs to hear this but:
• most SEO work is done outside the SEO team
• technical SEO ≠ advanced SEO
• the best SEO ideas might come from writers, developers, or analysts
In-house SEOs: I should be involved in more business decisions.
SEOs when they are involved in forecasting, headcount planning, prioritisation of technical debt, and purpose workshops.
No, bounce rate is not a ranking factor.
Yes, lowering your bounce rate by making the page load faster and improving the user experience will help with SEO.
In the flights space, Google is ranking organically for hyper competitive keywords with incredibly thin content that no other website could get away with.
I only see three options:
1️⃣ Every single SEO at Skyscanner, Kayak, Expedia, idealo, etc. is really bad at SEO (this…
What's one of the fastest growing sites on Google? In the flight booking segment it's... Google. Over the past year they've grown exponentially for flight path queries by using SEO in their own search engine. Taking a lot of traffic from Kayak, Skyscanner, Expedia etc.
So many SEOs these days don't have any principles or even just pride in their work. Everything is superseded by a checklist in a Wordpress plugin.
There was a time when SEOs were willing to try stuff. You won't recover from a Google update unless you are willing to do so again.
@searchliaison
Google is allowed to call an article quoting evidence from a court case „an opinion piece“ and the tweet does not show a community note explaining how that is problematic? 😳
But in the end, they rarely match the search intent. Seeing volatility in this space - and mainly losses - means that Google improved its ability to understand search intent and quality.

If you think EEAT is something you can add with a Wordpress plugin, you are doing it wro...
Actually, never mind. Please go ahead. Makes it easier for the rest of us.

In my experience, former athletes in the workplace
• are disciplined,
• can handle setbacks/failures, and
• understand motivation, a positive attitude, and being a team player are important.
Hear me out.
1. Publish a small piece of okay-ish content.
2. Optimize and expand it.
... is way faster than:
1. Create the perfect piece of content before publishing anything.
No technical SEO has mastered all 5:
1. GSC API
2. Python
3. Looker Data Studio
4. Regular expressions
5. Not saying “it depends” to every question from higher-ups
Technically, EAT, UX, and authorship are not ranking factors. 🤓
In the real world, believing in EAT, UX, and authorship as ranking factors will lead to better SEO results. 📈
Would you rather be technically correct or successful? 🤔
It feels like Google is falling apart.
• Discover is Yahoo-only for some users.
• Google Assistant can no longer act as a stop watch. In-fact, dozens of Assistant feature are discontinued.
• Quality of search results is the worst it ever was since the botched Helpful Content…
Oh good, a Discover sandwich with SIX consecutive Yahoo results and 2 YouTubes.
Besides the fact that none of these results interest me, what I really want to know is what happened to website diversity in Discover?
(Sry I didn’t realize the recording was capturing my music 🤣)
What I thought would make me happy:
• Nice car
• House
• Fancy watch
• Expensive clothes
What actually makes me happy:
• Free time
• Ouiet walks
• Absolutely crushing it with SEO at idealo
AI is replacing SEO Agencies.
You can optimize your website & rank it No. 1 on Google by yourself.
I'll show you how to top-rank your site on Google without an SEO expert:

SEO CONTENT WILL NO LONGER WORK ONCE GOOGLE HAS ROLLED OUT THE HELPFUL CONTENT UPDATED. SO IF YOU HAVE REALLY BAD SEO CONTENT YOU SHOULD DELETE IT NOW. BECAUSE THE UPDATE CAN HAVE A SITE-WIDE IMPACT.
In the video space, there are basically only winners.
TikTok grew a staggering 99%. And Youtube – already one of the most dominant websites in Google`s organic rankings- grew another 23%!😲
In total, video websites gained 25% during this update.

Personally, I do not think about productivity or expect every trip to be life-changing. I aim to have fun.
I did have one life-changing experience on a vacation, though. So I can confidentially say yes to that part.
