Hey book loving Twitter, buckle up for a wild ride, I’m about to share with you some of the challenges & complaints my school district has received from community members just this school year about books they don’t want in our libraries. But first, a little background info 🧵
Let me tell you a story of how I found out our
@KellerISD
school board trustees snuck an Evangelist film crew into my child’s high school last week & filmed him & many other students without permission. 🧵/1
We’re demanding all trustees involved resign immediately. They’ve lost the trust of the community, they lied to staff & educators putting their jobs at risk, they sacrificed the safety of our kids for their political agenda. If they don’t resign we’ll exhaust all legal avenues./9
My school board,
@KellerISD
, will pass a resolution this Monday night to allow our highly educated school counselors to be replaced by untrained & unlicensed volunteer chaplains. And our untrained & unlicensed trustees will determine what the chaplains will do in the district. /1
Tonight, after a discouraging school board meeting fighting against 🏳️🌈hate, I stopped at McDs for a Diet Coke. As the teenage employee handed me my drink, a smile spread across his face, & he said,”I like your rainbow pin.” & I remembered why I fight, even when it feels futile.
/3 I served on the committee for The Diary of Anne Frank Graphic Novel. The person who challenged the book didn’t even show up to defend their position. But now the book is pulled.
These two
@PatriotMobile
funded trustees used my kid as a prop in their political games. Apparently one of them literally snuck in a side door. Kids heard them discuss & disparage “transgender teens.” They snuck one of our banned books into the library to show on camera. /7
Just got word that today, the day Before school starts,
@KellerISD
has informed teachers & librarians to remove all previously challenged books from school shelves. Even the books that passed the challenge committees. The Diary of Anne Frank, Graphic Nov. is on this list. 🧵/1
I called the principal. She was aware & investigating, she didn’t know who the crew was- I told her! The principal had been off campus Friday. Trustees lied to staff abt having permission. they have security Badges & district wide access. Staff had no reason to not believe them/6
We’d love to know what they were doing with this film crew. Likely some Christian nationalist story abt our trustees saving kids from “CRT & LGBT+ ideology & bad library books .” We’re guessing the film crew was also lied to-I hope they would never film children w/o permission/8
My son came home from school last week & told me a film crew from the Netherlands doing a documentary on “American schools” filmed him & his friends at lunch he said The school board was w/them. I called my mom friends. They were hearing similar stories from their kids. /2
I gathered all the pictures of the news crew I could find (teens take a lot of pictures). I went to the internet & searched “far right politics in the Netherlands.” Found a university proff who studies the far right in Europe. I emailed her the pictures w/ an explanation. /4
I was immediately concerned. Our school board doesn’t talk to the “liberal news media.” It was the weekend, we made some calls. A district rep. confirmed to us that there was no official
@KellerISD
comms crew at the school that day. /3
She emailed me back. She knew them. It was
@TijsvandenBrink
who recently produced a documentary called “God, Jesus, Trump.” He focuses his work on the evangelical embrace of Trump in America. She suggested maybe he was doing a follow-up to his documentary.” /5
People can make whatever documentaries they want. I have no problem with that. But don’t you dare illegally use my child as a prop in furthering your political agenda. Especially taking advantage of the trust of the community in a place our kids are supposed to be safe.
Today, a man from my community who has been harassing me on social media outlets for YEARS (b/c of my activism) tried to connect w/2 of my minor children through their social media. I share this to say, the people always screaming “pedos,groomers!” are often the dangerous ones.
The Texas legislature just voted to allow school boards to replace public school counselors with “no certification needed chaplains.” These are the same people who say they want schools to stick to “reading, science & math” instead of “indoctrination.”
2/ These books went through the official district established challenge committee process. But because they all passed the committee process, our extremist Christian nationalist school board decided the process was “rigged.” Sound familiar? (2020 election)
I spent yesterday poll greeting for our school board race here in Texas. This unhinged woman is yelling at a very sweet (& very Christian) LONG time English teacher here in
@KellerISD
. And no surprise, these people-the far right fear mongering book banners prevailed at the polls.
@LeonHWagner
Are we all laughing at the $4 snap In Walmart shower current rod in a marbled mansion’s tacky chandeliered bathroom or horrified that the bathtub is also full of classified documents? Or both?
Settle in for more absurdity coming out of
@kellerisd
: Outrageous complaints received about books on our library preview purchase list. These titles have all been scratched from purchase for further review using our district bookbanning rubric. Here are the laughable complaints/1
And this manufactured outrage over books (that aren’t anywhere near young children) was happening while families were being slaughtered at the mall 30 miles away. This is hell. This is Texas. How can I keep raising my children here? 😭😭😭
Our far right school board here in
@KellerISD
is voting this week to arm teachers and put loaded guns in my children’s classrooms. They don’t trust our teacher’s to choose books (they ban books left & right) but they’ll let them bring guns to class.
@shannonrwatts
Biden’s war on American energy has left Americans with higher gas prices & increased dependence on foreign oil.
Texas is the key to restoring U.S. energy dominance & lowering the price at the pump.
I will ALWAYS fight federal overreach & protect our thriving energy industry.
We submitted an information request to our school district to determine how all this⬇️ came to . The records we received (while incomplete) really shed a light on the audacity 😳 of our board & their commitment to pushing their own personal political/religious agendas. /1 🧵
Let me tell you a story of how I found out our
@KellerISD
school board trustees snuck an Evangelist film crew into my child’s high school last week & filmed him & many other students without permission. 🧵/1
I finally met him! I’m voting for
@BetoORourke
because I’m raising 4 kids in TX & I want them safe & raised in a TX that embraces ALL people. I’m voting for him because I love my neighbors. This man brings me hope for the political future.

💙🗳
When book banners tell you they just want to keep “porn” out of schools, they’re lying. Our
@KellerISD
board just presented a policy that bans ALL books at ALL grade levels w/ the EXISTENCE of trans & non-binary characters. This is devastating. 😭
@Mike_Hixenbaugh
@pflagftworth
More disappointment coming out of
@KellerISD
. One of our HS was just told (w/no explanation) they are no longer allowed to perform “The Laramie Project.” It had already been approved AND cast. The principal & District Fine Arts Direc did NOT make this decision.
@MattShepardFDN
/1
We fought like hell to save these school board seats. We gained a bit of ground. But as local parents we simply cannot win against the highly funded political machine that is the Texas GOP. Our district is now 6-1 majority of PAC & GOP funded Christian nationalists.
@NoLieWithBTC
Here’s the thing
@NateSchatzline
. We don’t mind the drag. Or your homemade movie. It’s the hypocritical Christian nationalism your forcing on me and me family and my community.
The librarians & teachers in
@KellerISD
are by & large incredible! ❤️📚They are devastated by all this nonsense. It pains them to remove books from shelves. Many of them are being harassed. Blame this on the extremists playing culture war politics in our schools.
Laney isn’t just a local mom. She’s a mouthy activist who hates the new board.
Unfortunately for her, the voters in Keller don’t want to go back to CRT oppression lectures & grexualization of 11 year olds. 4/4
Romeo & Juliet is being pulled from
@KellerISD
libraries & classrooms today. it has been officially challenged & will now be reduced to our book banning checklist where it’s fate will be decided. Until then, teachers can’t read from it, recommend it, or have it on their shelves.
Let me tell you a story of how I found out our
@KellerISD
school board trustees snuck an Evangelist film crew into my child’s high school last week & filmed him & many other students without permission. 🧵/1
Until apathetic complacent white suburbanites in TX decide to wake up, educate themselves, & actually vote, we’re stuck here. I watched people vote all day. Old Republicans in MAGA hats believing the fear mongering w/their pay to play “dfw conservatives who to vote for card.”
In Aug, a group of 100 TX Chaplains signed a letter opposing the bill as an “affront to the religious freedom rights of students & parents as well as church-state separation, & would take $ away from trained mental health professionals who are better equipped to serve students.”5
We even watched them eat one of their own in this race. She was an incumbent. Navy vet. Mom. Trump Supporter. But she wasn’t extreme enough. And worst of all, she was willing to listen & compromise. So They lied about her, maligned her reputation, & replaced her with a monster.
We’re getting a few answers as to the topic of the “documentary,” they were filming. This is the trustee’s friend explaining and defending her actions.
A reminder, trustees on our school board are on record saying they do not believe in the separation of church and state and that they answer to the Lord rather than the community. They also happen to be funded and directed by Patriot Mobile and other Christian nationalist orgs./6
@DrWernerKlopek
@DGBarnes3
This is the surest way to get a lot of Texans to stop using y’all. Tell them it’s gender inclusive. 🤣 Our police dept just released this and people are LOSING their minds. ❤️🏳️🌈
Update from
@KellerISD
school board/Dutch film crew. One trustee has resigned & we’re still waiting on the others involved (we have confirmed one trustee snuck into the bldng through a side door). We have a statement from the film company
@eonl
that leaves us w/ a lot of ?? /1🧵
When this bill was debated in the Texas house, representative
@jamestalarico
presented an amendment that would bar chaplains from proselytizing and would require parental consent before meeting with students. The amendment was rejected. /3
I submitted a public information request for the complaints the district has received about books librarians have requested to purchase. Some of these will make you laugh. Some will make you angry.But remember, the best way to fight book banning is to VOTE in local elections!
I assure you, we cannot trust our trustees with this. Just last year, one of our trustees invited a former prison chaplain who was out on bond & indicted with 4 counts of sexual assault- to pray at a school board meeting /8
We have teachers & administrators from area private Christian schools submitting long lists of books for challenge in our public schools, fake names, & the same handful of parents.This isn’t what the community wants. It’s all manufactured outrage for a political agenda./18
PublicEd in Texas Y’all: Our
@KellerISD
educators just got an email from a local church inviting them to a course on how to teach the Bible & Christianity in the classroom. Ironic coming from the crowd who wants only “reading, writing, & math!” in schools.
@FFRF
@Mike_Hixenbaugh
Representative Gene Wu,
@GeneforTexas
, proposed an amendment That would bar the use of public funds and require schools to provide a religious leader of a different faith for students who request them. That amendment was also rejected. /4
🚨Fellow Texans: The coordinated & highly funded social media campaign by far-right politicians & political orgs undermining & attacking public education is just firing up in preparation for the Oct special leg. session. Watch for similar messaging from all the usual suspects. /1
The law which allows for all this- SB 763- & the resolution written by our trustees, seemingly gives these chaplains (& incidentally board trustees) power to implement any programs, services, or support they desire & have it paid for w/ state safety & security funds. /2
Our school board will tell the community that they’re only doing this to allow chaplains to volunteer & serve our students. But that’s a lie. Under current district policy, chaplains, like anyone else in the community are already welcome to volunteer within the district. /7
My school board here in TX is pulling Harry Potter
#7
from elementary school shelves & The Twilight series from 7th & 8th grade shelves b/c they aren’t “age appropriate,” but this cringey billboard just went up around the corner & now my 1st grader has a whole lot of questions.
I Served on a book challenge committee for my school district today. Someone tried to get the graphic novel adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank pulled from shelves. Everything but the illustrations come from her diary. We voted unanimously to keep it on library shelves. 1/
The movement to overtake school boards in TX is well coordinated & well funded. My kids have a school board w/ 6/7 trustees who answer to political orgs & politicians rather than the families in our community. This isn’t about parents rights, it’s about $$, power, & control.
NEW: Over the last three years an interconnected network of PACs, largely funded by billionaires who support school privatization, has begun to transform the nature of local school board elections across Texas. I mapped it all out for
@TexasObserver
.
Why is the TX leg so against Public Ed? Their bills leave nearly every district in a massive deficit. The senate offered $60+ & the house $90+ from the budget we’ve had since 2019! That’s $6210 per student & then these same legislators vote to fund private schools $8k p/s!
A lot of questions about where I got the copies of these complaints/book challenges. I submitted a Public Information Request (PIR, FOIA, Sunshine Law, etc.) for them!
This story is mind blowing. And these people are succeeding at pulling thousands of books off of school shelves. No matter where you live, it’s time to attend your school board meetings.
1. Earlier this month, a mysterious woman appeared before a school board in Texas and claimed that, when she was 11, she READ A SCHOLASTIC BOOK THAT SPARKED A DEBILITATING PORN ADDICTION.
We investigated.
And it's ABSOLUTELY WILD what is happening.
🧵
@KyleMazzaWUNF
It could happen to anyone? 🤣🤣 That’s the point of the justice system. Money & power shouldn’t protect you from criminal investigations. It ABSOLUTELY could and should happen to anyone who breaks the law.
#lawandorder
Our school board created a policy that allows allows people to challenge any book for any reason & it’s automatically pulled from library purchase orders & shelves. 1000s of wasted hours & $$, & we’re losing books left & right to appease these extremists. /17
Public school educators in TX, take note: The Governor (and his cronies & billionaire donors) are lying, blaming, and villainizing YOU to push THEIR political agenda. As a mom of 4 kids in TX schools I can assure you racial & sexual activism isn’t happening by schools.
Reading & math scores plummet as racial and sexual activism replace academics in schools.
Instead of prioritizing data-proven methods to close gaps in literacy & math, some public schools have spent time on political agendas.
We’re changing that in TX.
Our district has a policy requiring librarians post their book purchase requests online for 30 days for public review. ANY book w/complaints submitted during the 30day window is pulled from the list for “review.”Then our school board reviews complaints & they decide what to buy.
Our school district
@KellerISD
cut nearly ALL intervention counselors in the district last year due to budget cuts. My concern is that these chaplains will replace desperately needed intervention counselors. We can blame our state legislature for refusing to fund public Ed. /11
A team of parents in
@KellerISD
just dropped of a whole new slew of “In God we Trust” posters to the district administration. They’ll also be getting a letter from our lawyer as to why Patriot Mobile’s signs aren’t compliant with Texas state law.
@stevanzetti
@Mike_Hixenbaugh
Anyway, Today’s my birthday and I need your help! Here in my community We’re raising $ to sponsor our school librarians to attend the
@TXLA
conference in April. Our district withdrew all funding & support for them to attend. Our board thinks the Texas Library Assoc. is “woke.”
Sadly, even if these books pass re-review, once they’re on shelves, they can be challenged again. And they’ll be once again reduced to this awful & nonsensical checklist our school board created:
The Christian nationalist lgbtq+ hating, teacher hating Facebook group in my community is very angry that I’m tweeting out against our school board’s bigoted book banning rubric. But we’re going to show up at the board meeting and we won’t be silenced. 😘❤️📚🏳️🌈
@mrs_g_rider
I’m an identical twin, people used to always tell my mom “two for the price of one!” And she always let them know having twins was no BOGO. It was always two for the price of two!
Just when we thought our far right school board couldn’t get worse. Last night in
@KellerISD
they invited a man who has been indicted on FOUR counts of sexual assault to sit with elementary school kids & open our school board meeting with a prayer. 🧵/1
Hey
@GregAbbott_TX
, this legislature has passed the most wasteful, outrageous, & disgraceful bills & still, you can’t get them to pass your billionaire friends’ voucher plan. This is a mandate From the people. TEXAS DOESN’T WANT VOUCHERS. No special session. Fund public Ed!
The Texas House failed to advance a bill that would allow families to use taxpayer dollars to pay for private schools.
Gov. Greg Abbott has signaled he would call a special session if lawmakers failed to pass a voucher-like program open to all students.
This is the sitting TX state legislator that doxxed me in February. He held a campaign rally at my school district board meeting demanding biblical & Christian values in schools.
@NateSchatzline
Oh my. A new video just surfaced that shows Rep. Nate Schatzline (R-TX), who wrote a bill to restrict drag shows, dressed in drag while skipping through a park wearing a black sequined dress.

There are some hefty accusations out there against me, so for the record: Of course I don’t want porn in schools. No one wants porn in schools. I agree, Not all materials are appropriate for all ages or all kids. That’s why we as parents can decide what’s best for OUR kids.
@kittynouveau
If someone told this to my husband when I went out of town I’d come home to a $20k grand piano in the living room and a lot of really loud opera music.
I’ll say it to my dying day- if you don’t want your kids to read these books, that’s your choice! Call the district, limit your child’s access. But STOP making these decisions for MY kids & other kids in the district. Stop encroaching on my parental rights & my children’s rights!
