Excited to share with you an op-ed that I wrote for
@TeenVogue
in which I argue that the police should not be allowed to lie to young suspects in interrogations.
Heartfelt congratulations to

@DrNadiaChaudhri
who was promoted to Full Professor today. Warm wishes & I hope you get to celebrate with your Sun and your Moon ❤️
My postdoc & I have had a manuscript under review for 9 months & today it was returned to us bc they said they were unable to find suitable reviewers.
Has this happened to anyone else? I’m completely shocked & frustrated.
I don’t know what’s been powering me through the last year (YEAR) but whatever it was doesn’t feel like it’s working anymore. I’m tired & running out of steam. Don’t know why I’m saying this. I guess solidarity to anyone else reaching a breaking point now.
Left the car dealership after a service & was told that I would receive a survey & that giving anything less than a 9 or 10 on the scale was the same thing as giving a 0

Closing time: You don't have to stop using pop culture references as the first half of the title of your journal article, but you can't stay here
Me telling my husband that this is the last grant I will submit for a long time I swear and I just need a few more days of him doing everything
@Momademia
Woah. My friend put my (very very unwashed) hair full of sea salt in 2 long French braids/plaits yesterday in Hawaii for the 19 hour long home. I took it out tonight & are perms still a thing bc this has me wondering…?😬
Whenever I do the dreaded teary daycare dropoff w/ the 3yo, I always whisper "We can do hard things" (
@glennonDoyle
) to her over & over.
I never thought she could hear me over her tears but yesterday I was stressing about a work thing & she said "We can do hard things, mama"❤️
"Please provide additional information deemed relevant to your contributions during the academic year"
lol...
I HAD NO CHILD CARE FOR 2 YOUNG KIDS FOR 9 MONTHS AND YES I AM SHOUTING THIS
It's

@DrNadiaChaudhri
- the neuroscience prof & mom who shared her powerful story with us all 2 years ago. She was only 43 (my age now). Thinking of her family today & struck all over again by how unfair it is.
I know I'm taking a huge risk tweeting about my kids' food/eating again but here goes...
They've been claiming to not be hungry for dinner & to want snacks instead. So last night my husband started calling dinner "evening mega-snack time" & it actually worked. KIDS. 😂🤷♀️
Some good personal news that I couldn't be more excited about....Got this email a few days ago: "You are among those recommended for a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award (United Kingdom) for the 2021-2022 academic year."
Cancelling my weight loss subscription app that I've literally never once opened so that I can pay for a monthly charcuterie box subscription is the pandemic selfcare I need right now.

& I once Twitter-bonded over our love of sleeve tattoo t-shirts for our same-age sons. I can't wrap my head around what she is going thru but the beauty of what she has created with the Nadia Chaudhri Wingspan Award will stay with me a long time.
Happy to have married someone who looks at me & says, "I dunno, Lindsay, but maybe during a global pandemic while working fulltime, parenting 2 young kids, running a non-profit, & battling a chronic illness is NOT the time to try to lose weight?" Saving me from myself since 2009.
You ever just look at your kids and think, "This characteristic/behavior is going to be SO useful for you as an adult but I really, really wish you didn't have to practice it on me?"
#pleasesayyes
I saw a tweet the other day that said something like "Parents of young kids are still working from home with no child care and we need to talk about how impossible this situation is." I can't find the tweet now. But, yeah. Day 88 and it's really getting to me. No breaks. None.
I am still amazed that my 1st grader/year 2 kid needs NO school supplies to start school here in England and all of his lunches are free for him (and all the kids) at a public/state school!!
@clhubes
On hour 3 of waiting for the doc to see our sick toddler, I resorted to letting her watch videos on my phone. Doc came in & snapped at me "Don't you know that's the worst thing in the world for her brain?" I'm not an expert on screen time but I am a developmental psychologist &
Told my 92 year old grandma about my Fulbright rejection today. I’m a first gen college student so she didn’t know what a Fulbright was but let’s just say I can’t repeat what she had to say about the decision makers 😳😂
Last spring I made a mini Montessori classroom for my 2 young kids. I soldiered thru. Worked so hard as a prof & a mom. As we move into winter 2021 I feel more overwhelmed than ever. Like I have nothing left to give. (1/2)
My 6yo is positive for Covid. I am feeling every emotion right now. Fear. Sadness. Guilt. Anger.
If you have easy access, pls send me links to reassuring data on kids bc my biggest emotion is fear.
We are in the UK this year & no vaccines for 5-11s yet so he is not vaxxed.
My Christmas present is two nights in a tiny house Airbnb in the countryside All. By. Myself. I couldn’t be more excited about it. Going to try to truly unplug from work for almost 48 hrs for the first time in over 9 months. 😳
@Momademia
When I was a teenager, for some reason I targeted 26 as the magical age at which I would really feel like a proper adult & like I always knew what I was doing.
Anyway, I'm 44 today. 26 was not that age. And neither is 44, lol.
Top five types of water that toddlers are willing to drink, ranked:
1) Bath water during a long soak
2) Water sucked off of a toothbrush
3) Water directly from a hose or sprinkler
4) Lake or river water
5) Water in a children’s reusable water bottle
@Momademia
I ended both of my lectures this week by showing photos of my puppy on the big screen. This is fine, right? I mean students always want to see puppies right?
I’ve read a lot of parenting books. But I’ve never seen a “how not to lose the will to live during bedtime each and every night.” Can someone write it ASAP?
Suggestions from my kids on how mommy can make herself feel better following today’s major grant rejection:
5yo: climb onto the top of the house, jump into the snow & smack your face on the ground
3yo: lick a chicken nugget
@Momademia
@AngelaD_Evans
OH HI THERE I JUST SUBMITTED A MAJOR REVISION "REJECT & RESUBMIT" MANUSCRIPT THAT HAS BEEN HANGING OVER MY HEAD FOR 8 MONTHS & I COULD CRY & YES I AM SCREAMING THIS.
5 year olds will just wake up at the crack of dawn, crawl in your bed, and loudly whisper “A GROUP OF JELLYFISH IS CALLED A SMACK, NOT A PACK” in your ear without saying good morning first.
HI EVERYONE TODAY WE GOT A BABYSITTER AND HAD THE VERY FIRST AND ONLY BREAK FROM OUR YOUNG KIDS IN 108 DAYS AND IT WAS LOVELY AND NEEDED AND YES I AM SHOUTING THIS
@Momademia
Officially in my gate area. Still in disbelief that my passport cleared customs at 4pm & I was able to go retrieve it from a weird cargo area & now I’m really here. Will see my babies in the morning. Thanks for all the support during this very odd ordeal!❤️
This is the face of someone who was asked not to participate in one of the exercises in his puppy socialization class night bc he was repeatedly trying to hump the trainer’s dog 🤦🏻♀️
Aaaaaaaand block. This is hugely inappropriate. As a developmental psychologist and a parent I’m not sure what my child’s eating habits at age 3 have to say about her future as a potential “spouse” nor do I care. 🤷🏻♀️
My husband MADE me this for Mother’s Day. (He is an ecologist/biologist so this is not his field so to speak). He’s always been very creative but this wowed me for sure. ❤️
Shockingly I hit over 3000 followers during what I'm calling Toddlerfoodgate. Welcome! I'm a developmental psych prof & I tweet about children & the law, academia, &
#pandemicparenting
. Once I tweeted a pic of my 3yo's food but won't make that mistake again;)
Yesterday I crossed the US border for the first time in a long time. Drove to my hometown in MI where I was able to see my grandma & get VACCINATED!! Both events made me tear up. & they are cushioning the blow from the Fulbright rejection which seems far less important than this
My least favorite time of day: Second Bedtime.
This is when you accidentally fall asleep putting your kid(s) to bed, wake up at your actual bedtime, & have to give up getting late night work done. Only to have trouble falling back asleep.

My son’s teacher took the time out of her day to call me & then ask to speak to my 6yo to tell him how much she and the class will miss him over the next 10 days while he isolates due to covid. 😭❤️
Teachers, man. We don’t deserve them 😭
The school district of my hometown in Michigan has just banned...checks notes....backpacks.
Because a 3rd grader was found with a loaded gun in their backpack.
Backpacks definitely seem like the main issue here.
It took me 4.5 months but I thought the world should know that I’ve finally finished this Costco container of dark chocolate sea salt caramels entirely on my own. Follow your dreams I say. Don’t let anyone hold you back...
Listening to virtual kindergarten
“Who can tell me something they learned about Japan in the video?”
Kid 1: I rode my bike yesterday without training wheels!
“Amazing. Does anyone have something to share about Japan?”
Kid 2: I just want to say it’s my brothers birthday today.
I’m giving my first in person talk in over 2 years this week & I don’t even know how to do this & be around other humans again. How do we greet each other now? Wrong answers only.
I don’t feel better w/ the start of new year. I feel substantially worse. I don’t know how I’m going to rally for what’s left of this pandemic. Please tell me I’m not the only one.

Just know that if I'm emailing in a form that had to be signed but couldn't be signed electronically and that I needed to print, then sign, then scan back in, I am probably absolutely livid while doing it.
I do apologize but I must show you this coat at every angle bc it’s the single best article of kids clothing I have ever purchased. Got in the post Xmas sales 2 years ago & it finally fits & was finally worn around London! And yes I would wear it if I could 😂
Yesterday I woke up to the news that my grandma - a constant force in my life - had died. I knew it was coming but you can’t really prepare to have your heart broken. I will say more about her but for now 💔
Photos are 1980 (me) & 2015 (meeting my first born who made her a gg)
In relation to my burnout tweet does anyone else have an irrational fear that if they stop to rest/take a break they might just never get back up again? I feel like it’s 90% inertia keeping me going right now...
My husband is going to clear out his research lab before they shut it down tomorrow. So in addition to sharing this home with two young kids, I will soon be sharing it with 30 moth pupae. Anyone else suddenly coexisting with new critters?

@AcademicChatter
The 6yo woke me up this morning by crawling into my bed at 7am & with no other greeting, whispered “If you want I can tell you more facts about spiders & snakes” into my ear 😬
5yo’s bedtime questions always slay me. Took me awhile to figure out tonight that he was asking about the origins of human language...eventually he boiled it down to:
“How did they decide that paper was called paper and who decided?”
I love age 5. ❤️
Me walking my 5yo to school: It makes me sad that someday you won't want me to hold your hand while we walk to school.
5: Why not?
Me: You'll be older & might not want to.
5: But I want to NOW, Mummy.
Thank you to my 5yo for reminding me to stay in the moment.

I feel compelled to share some of the more creative meals my husband has done for our little ones, thus reclaiming his honor (lol). Note: This still doesn’t mean they ate it🤷🏻♀️
I just got this letter from my 6yo’s school & I just can’t. I can’t like I’ve never canted before.
I don’t even know how to respond to this. He literally missed those days because he had Covid. 🤯
I feel like sharing a funny story about an email error that could've ended my career before it began (but luckily did not). I've shared it as a funny/cautionary tale w/ students in the past & it always gets big laughs. NSFW language

Was so disappointed to have the writing retreat come to an end today BUT ended the day with a manuscript acceptance, a revise & resubmit, & other super good news that I can’t yet share. Yay!❤️
@clhubes
oh how I wish I had a snarky reply for her like "Oh really? Worse than, let's say, heroin?" But I was too shocked and tired & it haunts me to this day.
5 years ago today...my ever serious little 4 month old. Question: How much would you pay to hold your kids again as babies...even just for a few minutes?😭😭😭
@Momademia
This miserable AM brought to you by a 3yo who hid daddy's wallet but can't remember where. My research is on children's memory & the best ways to elicit accurate & detailed reports from kids...& I am failing at finding it

thrilled to announce that I've been awarded "worst parent of the year" for sending my kindergartener to school without her water bottle today despite me making it thru every single day of elementary school sans water bottle
One of my biggest regrets from grad school/postdoc is not engaging in more stats training. I know enough to get by but wish I had taken advantage of training opps & didn't have to rely on others' stats expertise as much.

Well the good news is that at age 4.5 my daughter wrote me her very first note…sounding out each word by herself. I was so proud.
And the bad news is….🤦🏻♀️
