I was asked to clarify, and am glad to do so: HES courses are Harvard U courses (often the same as in FAS, as for my courses). HES bachelor’s and master’s degrees are Harvard U degrees. HES is a school in Harvard U analogous to other schools. HES students are Harvard U students

On Rufo: what do integrity police say about his claim to have “master’s degree from Harvard,” which is actually from the open-enrollment Extension School? Those students are great - I teach them- but they are not the same as what we normally think of as Harvard graduate students

Rufo could have proudly and honorably said, "I pulled myself up by bootstraps;to prove it I have master's degree from Harvard extension school, along with other smart and gutsy students."Instead he used weasel words to try to attach himself to Ivy status and prestige.Insecurity??

@realChrisBrunet I have no gripe at all with extension school -- I proudly and happily teach in it; I admire and respect the students and I love talking with them. Extension school does great service to education. My gripe is with people who try to pass themselves off as something they are not.

@evelkniefall not flaws--your word, not mine. Extension school students are mostly smart, ambitious, hard working, thoughtful, sometimes very accomplished--but mostly striving for upward mobility without background that would get them admitted to what is usually understood as Hvd. grad school

On this maelstrom, mainly to HES students/staff: I regret that you got dragged into a dispute with nothing to do with you, that caused distress.I endorse and admire HES’s promotion of an inclusive, engaged, ambitious student body. I'm sorry my writing seemed to suggest otherwise.

@smotus I just noted the same thing. Apparently, if it really matters, racial diversity and equality are valuable or even essential -- but universities don't really matter, so racial diversity and equality can be jettisoned. Is that the correct interpretation???

@jaketapper people were fed fantasies of being patriots, true Americans, heroes of a revolution, upholding values of liberty and truth--all to have it smashed to smithereens. If the rest of your life feels empty and without deep purpose, then what? so, so sad. And evil to do this to them.

In the 2nd most important news of the day: I’m in the Colorado Rockies and just did 4 zip lines for the 1st time without falling off or having heart failure. Hands still shaking—but I couldn’t bail out in front of the 10 year olds in the group. Fun!!

@emayfarris brilliant idea! I'm a new fan of "get students to say something specific at the semester's beginning (no grade or penalty), then reflect (in writing?) on the same issue and their initial views at the semester's end." Did views deepen? change? new considerations? why?

@__pixelgrid @DanielaPopelka wait a minute-I don't get the point of all of this scolding of me. _Rufo_ is the one being a snob, by obfuscating exactly which Harvard unit his master's degree comes from. If he were proud of it, wouldn't he say so explicitly? Should your scorn be turned on him?

Does Chris Rufo have a 2nd agenda, beyond pushing Pres. Gay out of Harvard presidency? "I think the entire corporation needs to resign as well as President Gay," Rufo said in an interview. "I would be happy to join the corporation to help turn it around." -- Wall St J., 12.29/23
