Martin Scorsese will adapt a nonfiction book about a white fbi guy and change the entire focus and heart of the film to be more about the Osage perspective and 14 year olds on here will still assume it’s gonna be a white savior flick or something and call him a racist old man
Dune is impossible to spoil because it thrives off knowing inevitable futures so knowing what happens at the end doesn’t spoil the experience. The book will open chapters with “the guy you’re about to meet is the traitor everyone’s worried about, heres his first scene”
Dune is nearly impossible to spoil. Anything you tell someone sounds like gibberish. “So Paul likes the name of this type of mouse but it’s also a moon and he’s like guys call me this and you know of course that means he’s space Jesus or not. Then Austin butler had a birthday so”
This isn’t AI which is just more proof that humans do uncanny valley way better than AI because there’s artistic intent behind it (and it actually looks good)
Played like a trivia game last night with my family and someone’s card asks us what year Titanic won its Oscar’s and I was like well the awards take place the year after and Titanic came out in 97 so you guys are wrong, the answer is 1998. Flip it over and the answer is 1997
I like that there’s a major continuity error where his hand is when it cuts wider as if they were filming an actual giant monkey and not doing this all in post
Tenet is actually a special film because it divinely selects those who are worthy of hearing the dialogue and those who are not. I can hear it just fine, I’m one of the chosen
Martin Scorsese famously hates music and has definitely never not once for sure not multiple times directed concert films and documentaries on musical artists that couldn’t be true he only does gangster flicks
I know it shouldn’t be as annoying as it is for people to want to engage with your passions but talking to non-film people about film is such a burden lmao. I fundamentally don’t think about the medium the same way
Unsubtlety here works because it’s an innocent mind learning about the world for the first time, it’s literally “babies first exposure to wealth disparity and poverty” so the images we see are through her perspective, ideas lateralized in simple ways
Maybe it's the death of monoculture talking, but I find it genuinely fascinating how the AVATAR series & the 2010s PLANET OF THE APES revival do incredible business & rate well, but leave very little in terms of lasting impact. They roll up, do their thing, leave & that's it.
All timer joke that Brad Pitt is clearly playing Ryan Reynolds and then the “twist” is that Ryan Reynolds was supposed to be the protagonist the whole time. Only good use of him in a movie.
The debate around this is so funny. There’s a scene where the owl flies through the doorway and then Leo steps in as it disappears. Scorsese definitely took this into consideration at some point or another.
Saw The King of Comedy at an independent theater for April fools, and the movie starts and it’s the opening of Joker (2019) for like 30 seconds before getting to the actual film
Showing that evil people are capable of love isn’t redeeming or excusing them, it’s just honest and even more scary. It would be a disservice to portray certain characters as cartoonishly evil. It being hard to sympathize with a protagonist doesn’t make them not compelling
Pretentious Marvel-Bros will be like “my favorite film? you mean movie? Well you’ve probably heard of it, it’s one of the biggest blockbusters of the last three years, and has THREE Spider-Men!” Instead of something normal like Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai Du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
I love that Arthur has no similarities to any other Joker other than “violent clown”. He’s not a cunning and manipulative criminal mastermind, he’s not a psychopath, he doesn’t have lethal gags or pranks, he doesn’t use his laughter for intimidation, hes not a mob boss, nothing
Praising Barbie by getting mad at Gerwigs creative vision and assuming the women involved had no agency and also saying half of the movie sucks and it’s co-lead is a bad a character
The “normie” fight against Scorsese is so funny cus if they bothered watch any of his stuff they’d see he’s like a really fun filmmaker, like his 3 hour movies aren’t even slow and moody he aims to be entertaining
Great bit in Dune 2 with Stilgars performance when he starts to worry for a second Paul is going to lose the fight, so many complex emotions in such brief amount of time, and his relief in that meme gif is equally distressing
My first instinct here was that when it cuts to nolan running it’s a stunt double, and then I was left wondering why I immediately assumed Christopher Nolan couldn’t Run
Catching up on the Nolan Late Show episode and I didn’t know I needed Stephen Colbert chasing Christopher Nolan around Princeton while the Benny Hill theme plays in the back until today…
The duke is constantly like “wow I’m probably going to die aren’t I?” And everyone is like “yeah he’s right but tell him not to say that” and then the chapter where he dies opens with “legend has it when Leto died a meteor dashed through the skies of caladan”
Amazing how you feel this push and pull the entire film. Like the 2 people in charge are battling, one wants to make a really bland bad movie and the other is a master with unstoppably fun visual instincts. Good film, wish we got a full Raimi no connection to mcu one though
Sam Raimi has revealed that Kevin Feige originally wanted to remove Doctor Strange & Mordo's "corny" stare-off scene from
#MultiverseOfMadness
:
"I said, 'Please, Kevin, let me have that.' He went, 'Okay, fine. Have your corny stuff...'" Full quotes:
My marvel enjoying co-worker was trying to convince me “Speed Racer” looks awful (using this gif) it’s astounding just how much they’re the ones who actually hate fun
Since this apparently has a lot of people enjoying it I’ll clarify the performance isn’t insane because he’s Doing a Voice it’s that he’s creating an incredibly layered character with a range of emotions through a voice that looks awkward coming out of his mouth
In this scene here he’s not talking about any of that he’s trying to propose his love for her through poetry after she moved on from his rejection so she mentions that his “one living relative who is a sick old lady losing her home” saw her play, as did her father who hates her
There is absolutely zero energy or personality here, the movement is floaty and stale, the sound design is almost empty, the music has no idea what it’s doing, the edit carries no momentum, the city still feels lifeless, there is no triumph or romance or catharsis, or color
The Enemy looking “cool” and “powerful” is important here both as propaganda and to make them look scary, obviously James thinks this is cool or it wouldn’t be in the movie, but it also looks bleak and evil. Devoid of color, unrelenting machinations of destruction
It’s so funny when people try to separate “favorite” (movies you love for your own personal reasoning and feelings) and “best” (movies you love for you own personal reasoning and feelings)
It's super easy to make this super-overdone joke without doing the whole xenophobic "liking weird foreign film is pretentious 🤣🤣🤣" part but tiktokers will still do it every single time
I l think if we all stopped and actually engaged with this scene we’d find there’s a whole lot to take away from it, even out of context but especially in context. The movie isn’t subtle about the topics it discusses, but it’s conclusions and explorations are pretty layered imo!
Scorsese seems to regret making “Shutter Island,” which he calls “the last studio film I made”:
“[Winning an Oscar] encouraged me to make another picture with Shutter Island. It turned out I should have gone on probably to do Silence.”
There were 35 new release movies I absolutely adored in 2023, but these are my eleven favorite because, fuck you Film Twitter, I couldn’t just pick ten.
This got so big people are pointing out it’s just promotional editing, which has nothing to do with my observation, which is simply that I found the cut amusing cus it reads as if cutting together multiple takes from an actor, rather than cging a big monkey
No one else in the film does this. It comes off naturally in the film, but it’s a VERY specific detail, and Scorsese has admitted to, as all directors should, being keen on what people are wearing to represent them. The “curtains are blue because theyre blue” crowd is so boring
@BluRay24
He’s worked with Scorsese, de Palma, coen brothers, John woo, Paul Schrader, Cosmatos, Spike Jones, David Lynch, Ridley Scott, Joel Schumacher, sion sono, gore verbinski, etc etc
@Booker_booksie
He’s not that’s just how Leitch writes and directors characters lol. I think Brad Pitt is a better comedic actor though, so he pulls it off better. I assume the same will be true for Ryan gosling
People who live in LA getting connections faster and then getting a budget eventually to make a tv movie when they’re 24 like that doesn’t bother me but Raimi was from Michigan (💪) and just dropped out of highschool and made shit happen, he’s the “you have no excuses” guy
Superhero fan seeing a mildly cool but poorly executed action beat: this is the best thing I’ve ever seen
Slightly less cool superhero fan: clearly, you haven’t seen Captain Marvel 2
Occasionally someone will be cool but for the most part I feel like I’m tip toeing around things to be as safe as possible, like I have to force myself to talk generically about things. Even the basic questions like what’s your favorite movie or is there anything you’d recommend
"media consumption" fuck off, reading books is a hobby, watching movies is a hobby, listening to music is a hobby, playing video games is a hobby. it doesn't matter if you engage with corporate slop or something 2 people and their cats know. culture is a hobby
I think the negative reaction to this idea comes from years of online “theory” jerking off that goes on. This detail isn’t some grand reveal into the functions of the narrative. It’s a small thing. But it builds that subconscious visual connection. They put thought into it.
“It’s really weird that these directors didnt have a problem with the dark knight movies or Raimi’s Spider-Man movies or donners Superman or” no it’s not. Don’t pretend you’re missing the difference here.
