Black women were most likely to die in the medieval London plague. You might disagree. You might even have some evidence to the contrary. But you have to ask yourself: is this really worth losing my job over? Black women were most likely to die in the medieval London plague.

In the summer of 416 BC, an Athenian fleet of 38 ships carrying over 3,000 soldiers dropped anchor off the small Greek island of Melos, located south of Athens and east of the Peloponnese. The inhabitants, the Melians, were the descendants of colonists originally from Sparta.🧵

The true nightmare of #Rotherham is that the motives of those who turned a blind eye, however monstrous the consequences, were indeed noble.

So when Thucydides wrote about the negotiation on Melos, he presented it as a philosophic dialogue. It explains why Athens invaded Melos, but mostly it concerns the nature of power, realism versus idealism, the hazards of human self-deception. Let's read the Melian Dialogue. /7

A fun thread on Byzantine beauties. While Arabs got hot and bothered about the women, the attractive and dignified appearance of the Palaiologoi emperors, the final Byzantine dynasty, is often remarked on by contemporary westerners.

Medieval Arab writers stereotyped Byzantine women as promiscuous/immoral - yet also desirable. They are stereotyped in varying ways as “the most shameless,” adulterous, beautiful, uncovered, uncircumcised, & being uncontrolled - but also as attractive and beautiful (a thread)

The EU is turning to trustworthy energy suppliers. Azerbaijan is one of them. With today's agreement, we commit to expanding the Southern Gas Corridor, to double gas supplies from Azerbaijan to the EU. This is good news for our supplies of gas this winter and beyond.

There is a certain amount of motivated reasoning in the 'tanks are obsolete' discourse. We are witnessing battle between Europe's two largest tank armies. Both sides are shipping in replacements, so they clearly serve some function other than as targets.

A few weeks ago, many on here were imploring everyone to accept extreme restrictions on activity to save the lives of the elderly. Now, apparently the elderly must accept freezing to death to save the lives of Ukrainians. The commonality here is not a desire to save lives.

So was Thucydides a liar? Perhaps. But he was also a genius, a word I do not use lightly. His history is not just a description of the war between Athens and Sparta but an attempt to use the particular to illustrate general truths of human behaviour. /6

@jameskirkup Poductivity low? ⬆️ immigration. GDP/capita low? ⬆️ immigration. Housing too expensive? ⬆️ immigration. Social cohesion falling? ⬆️ immigration. Nobody breeding because of all above? ⬆️ immigration. Can I have a job at a thinktank now? Left, right or centre, answer is the same.

People will say any old drivel to justify their fetish for immigration. Statements like this are not even remotely in good faith, simply gaslighting by enemies who wish to destroy nations so they can rule over the rubble.

We shouldn't forget that IMO we have no natural ownership rights over this place. It's by chance that we ended up in a corner of the world relatively blessed with a legacy of good institutions and a prosperous economy.

A central theme of the dialogue is laid out in its opening. The Melians protest to the delegation that Athens is acting in an unfair, immoral and bullying way. The Athenian response is essentially “Yes, but what will you do about it?” /8

Sparta and Athens were enemies and we call their gruelling conflict the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). Athens would eventually lose. But in 416, this was still far from obvious; Athens held naval supremacy in Greek waters. /2

Suspected for a while that as living memory of WWII died, we'd start to see its horrors lose their edge. War becomes imaginable again, the crimes become contextualised or forgotten; everything loses its emotional immediacy, becomes the Past, like a faded sepia photograph.
