Father of 3 marvels. Lucky husband. Parent lottery winner. Ret’d infantryman. George & Frances Ball Dist. Prof. of Econ, VMI '84, UT ‘98, personal account.
My youngest received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point today. He is the newest member of the class of 2026.
I am overwhelmed with respect for the path he has chosen and the man he has become.
I am angry and sad that tonight, somewhere in eastern Ukraine a 20 year old, fighting fascists will spend his last night terribly tired, cold, wet, scared and hungry.
Tommorrow he’ll be killed. The world robbed of his intellect and imagination.
Pass the Ukraine Bill.

8/ Plenty of problems we can address today, but the world (and especially the USA) is so vastly better off today than it was in the Boomers came of age, that suggesting otherwise should attract considerable derision.
I’m a 13th generation American, combat veteran, whose family has served in every conflict from King Phillip’s War to current operations . . .
That makes me no more an American than a child born to an illegal immigrant this morning.
That’s why we are a great Republic.
I’m reading lots of criticisms of prosecutors, jurors and witnesses.
What I haven’t heard is anyone denying that DJT banged a pornstar while his wife was pregnant then used campaign funds to buy her silence.
My wife’s major post-chemo goal was to climb the Manitou Incline. We did so today. This is her at the summit with our youngest.
Time for some new goals!

Deeply disappointed in my introductory economics class today.
I discussed the Sherman Anti-Trust Act and noted that its author was the older brother of the famous architect of Atlanta's urban renewal, and no one even blinked.
That's the funniest this economist gets.
Here I explain that Indiana's poor and declining educational attainment, not our tax rates makes us unfit for the type of advanced manufacturing firm just announced in Ohio.
Ohio didn't beat Indiana in the bid for 3,000

jobs that pay $125,000 each. Indiana beat itself.
If I were a politician in

We must take stock of where we are as a nation. Instead of building walls around our capital, we must hunt down and imprison domestic terrorists. This is the fault of those who have embraced domestic terrorists as a political base. Have courage to confront them or resign.
Hilarious. Indiana GOP slates a guy who hasn't held a grown up job for more than a year, lied about his military service, is credibly accused of sexual harassment, and almost surely committed voter fraud.
Now they have a plan to make sure he cannot do anything while in office.
Indiana Republicans have a plan to "Diego proof" the secretary of state's office by installing a former Holcomb appointee as chief deputy secretary of state. Bob Grand will co-chair the transition.

Public pressure from women forced the United States to created places for them in our armed forces. Women ran to the front as hard as men, and when denied the chance to kill Nazi’s, instead built planes, ships and tanks, buried their husbands and boyfriends and brought victory.
I don’t listen to SOTU or SOTS addresses. I read the text, so no emotion, just policy and emphasis.
I say this guardedly, but it was was as good as I’ve read. Clear and optimistic. Truman or Reagan would’ve been happy with this.
Helluva start to a general election campaign.
@RadioFreeTom
That‘s funny. I worked in an infantry command post under indirect fire and with nerve agent gas alarms going off and didn’t see anything this discombobulated.
It requires little self-reflection to know that being born American is an unparalleled privilege.
It is morally bankrupt to demonize someone who would walk from Central America to secure a very tiny slice of that blessing for themselves and their children.
Roughly 1/3 of Jobs created in Indiana last year were attributable to FDI from France.
It is crucial that Hoosier citizens understand how important global trade and investment is to our state (and Midwest).
France is Indiana’s oldest trading partner and America’s first ally.

As someone with an extreme fear of nuclear war, I've made the decision to move the family to somewhere safer--rural North Dakota. About as far as you can get from population centers. If nothing else, we'll be safe from the warheads.
It’s September 1939. An objectively evil force is invading peaceful nations in Europe. They can be stopped with 5-7% of your military budget, or O.O47% of your GDP.
This is where we are now. Choosing Putin is morally equivalent to choosing Hitler in 1939.
Just heard a perhaps apocryphal story about

Plausibly undeniable.

1/ If you are considering a career in education in Indiana, let's put aside the promises, and take a look at what has happened to wages. This is cumulative wage growth for all private sector workers and all educational workers (K-12, and post secondary, private and public).

The abandonment of symmetry in this piece represents the dialectic of the crayon and the arm, combining as one, providing metaphor for empowerment of an artist in tension with what Ernst called Die Kindergarten.
Welp, the data is in and Indiana lost 4,000 jobs in April, despite 53,000 workers coming off unemployment benefits.
Maybe, and I'm just spitballing here, maybe the problem ain't benefits.

Eva Kor was deeply generous with her time and experiences. She visited schools across Indiana to share her story with a generation of kids. We should remember her with deep gratitude and awe.
Nice piece, I especially like the funding discussion. It’s precisely correct.

if you begin with the premise that the world is worse in any meaningful way than a half century ago, you’ve failed the first challenge of problem solving.
Truly bizarre to hear gubernatorial candidates talk about 'fixing' Indiana's skyrocketing property taxes.
We have among the lowest effective property tax rates in the nation. I suppose exploiting money illusion is as good an electoral approach as anything else.
6/ The current dip in educational attainment is anomalous (and geographically concentrated).
We are sending far more people to higher education than we were in the 1970's.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but local media has performed brilliantly during this Covid-19 crisis. Many of them have faced furloughs, all are in an industry in deep financial crisis. casting doubt on someone’s journalistic ethics without evidence is chickenshit behavior.
Got this note from a a student well after grades were turned in. Not an Econ major, just someone saying thanks.
The opportunity to be a professor has been a lasting gift. I’ll be forever grateful.
Just a reminder that we have a special name for the child of an illegal immigrant born here last night AND a decorated combat veteran whose family has been here for 350 years.
We are both Americans.
I don’t know which politicians need to hear this. But, if your comms team is struggling about how to respond to Putin’s murder of Navalny, maybe both of you should exit public life.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but every university should make it a habit to open up all academic buildings on the Sunday before the first day of class. There are literally hundreds of kids looking for classrooms before tomorrow's rush.
1/ Quick thread on Indiana state budget. The first thing to notice is that under basic growth assumptions (GDP at last' year's nominal rate, and inflation 4.5% in FY24, 2.5% in FY25), the state is spending much less on public services than in past.
Great piece. Those of us who serve, especially as field grade or general officers ought to be more aware of our responsibility to do so with the highest level of integrity. We sometimes fail, as did LTG Flynn. Past service might mitigate consequences, but not culpability.
Gen. Flynn deserves immense credit for his military service. He deserves credit for accepting responsibility. He is not, however, a victim of federal law enforcement. He did wrong and is paying his debt to society. That’s not exploitation. It’s justice.
In which I deliver the math about college grads and the trades in Indiana.
The numbers should surprise and shock those who think Indiana’s schools are ‘alright.’
In 20 years, think how history will view Alexi Navalny.
Then imagine how history will view Trump/Carlson/Vance/Hawley and the other piddling Putin fluffers.
A gaping chasm of character and courage.
This Amazon Warehouse received $16 million in tax incentives. That is $16,000 per worker of taxpayer subsidies.
When one of those workers dies in an accident, the state charges $7,000 max penalty.
Something's out of whack, and its not with Amazon.

Harriet Tubman is a fine choice for our currency. My sole complaint is that the portrait figure on the bill will be a bit understated. Dignified yes, but my aesthetics run more to her in action . . . as with this version.

Indiana’s focus on low wage employment, through tax incentives, reduced funding for education and a focus on non-college careers is now yielding a bitter fruit.
1/ Indiana has a $1.1 Bill budget surplus. We also have a shocking decline in college attendance. This will reshape prospects for economic growth in the state for decades. Left unaddressed it will palpably worsen the state's already lagging economic growth.

Here’s a concise list of US Navy battles in which gay sailors and officers participated:

If you aren't happy about the way your school is handling COVID then attend a school board meeting. Nationalizing local issues is like calling the White House about snow on your sidewalk.
If we all worried more about local gov't and less about the Fed's we'd be better off.
This is frankly remarkable. Real GDP growth since 2021 has averaged 3.1 percent, and 3.0 percent over the last year. This is the best 11 quarter stretch since 2006 (a bubble year). Could we really be heading into the type of robust expansion we haven't seen since the 90's?
An inconvenient fact to think about over the weekend.
I'm not sure it is fair to hold Presidents accountable for this (wars, pandemics, etc.). But if you do, you must get the facts right.

Enacting laws that require children to somewhat approach the age of consent before marriage is a real dogwhistle from the right.

I don't get it. Is being in the House or Senate such a great job that you NEED to keep doing it well into the twilight of your life (Feinstein, McConnell) or entirely debase yourself, and toss away any values you once held (Vance, Graham).
Is the job actually that great?

Nearly every highway improves after cross state lines out of Indiana. It is a remarkably visible testament to preserving a low tax environment.
The less visible issues are more worrisome.
Drove to St. Louis en route to Branson. A couple of observations:
1. I-70 is in noticeably better shape in Illinois vs Indiana. It’s very nice through basically all of Illinois until you get close to St Louis
2. Traffic drops off west of Terre Haute, though it picks up again

Indiana’s biggest economic challenge in this decade, and the next is education. It is not tax rates or infrastructure or the regulatory climate. It’s not housing supply, business attraction, high tech or venture capital.
Far and away it is schooling.
If I have any Indiana followers with someone at Ball State, please let them know we've opened up more seats in my Economics 116 class. I'm trying to make this a fun class for students who want to understand economics, but aren't currently econ majors.

I'm of the opinion that Juneteenth should be elevated to a much higher position among US holidays. This was the day MG Granger enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in the last corner of the Confederacy.
It should be third behind July 4th and Thanksgiving.
