Is the NIH grant system broken? Shockingly, I have thoughts. Thoughts from both sides of the process, grantee and reviewer. Thoughts from a mid-career scientist. Thoughts as an employer. Thoughts as a mentor. These are MY thoughts, attributable to no one else. Still with me?/1

For the record, my goal isn't to publish 50 papers a year. My goal is to never have someone listening to a journal club on one of my papers say "How the Hell did this get published?" or "Why can't WE publish crap like this?" or "Who the heck reviewed this? His mother?"

Random musings. When you’re a young PI, you really want to break into the “elite” journals, but those long term studies are not compatible with tenure most of the time. So publish wherever you can to establish productivity. Check.

In an infinitely recurring grant pro-tip: Use definitive verbs. No “may be, might be, could be.” Instead- “We hypothesize X *IS* true.” Let the word “hypothesize” carry the doubt. Putting it on the modal verb only emphasizes the doubt unnecessarily

I don’t usually do hot takes, but… Researchers should work the days of the week and the number of hours a day that they want. They’re capable of understanding the consequences of their choices without your input, outrage, or ridicule. One size does not fit all.

The lab is worried. I’m very “water off a duck’s back” with them because I don’t want them to worry about their jobs. It’s got to be the most stressful part of being a PI. Worrying not just about your trainees, but their families, if you don’t get your funding./20

I do think it’s time, before the death of Twitter, that we have an honest discussion about the pressures to fake data. I’ve had postdocs crying on my shoulder (literally) about their PIs demanding data that fits their hypotheses NO MATTER WHAT.

It’s even worse. It is saying that earning a PhD is based on the positive outcome bias of publication. And not on learning to do science, regardless of the direction of the outcome. This incentivizes data faking.

The most diabolical tactic of scientific institutions is to put a clock on the use of start up funds. No clocks. Get it in writing in your offer letter. If it’s not mentioned at all, don’t assume that there isn’t one. Assume the opposite.

He shuttered his lab after 5 years. You hear a lot of us in this app preaching about “white space”, which is a huge deal. Tired eyes lead to grumpy reviews. The simplest words, sentence and paragraph structure. It might feel “dumbed down” to you, but it’s not. It’s just clear.

Mentoring young faculty and your own postdocs at the same time is hard. But the advice (with intense questioning) is ultimately the same: “What’s the narrative?” If some of your data don’t fit your story, you can’t change the data. So change the story.

What covers it all is to ask colleagues to read your grant. Someone with only OK knowledge of your science. The feedback you’re looking for is not scientific, but literally a “1st impression”, because that’s what’s going to determine your status in “my pile” of good science apps.

@DrBenNeel @LeonidasPlatan1 I don’t want to make a comment that might seem to apply to any specific real grant in question, but I can say that I’ve reviewed mediocre grants from my scientific heroes. I score what’s in front of me, as I’m asked to. Sorry, not sorry.

Critiques come back. *Clearly* not the same reviewers. Reviewer 1 - “not translational enough”. What happened to the SRO speech at start of the meeting reminding reviewers that the NCI also funds *basic science*? “Not translational enough” is supposed to be a verboten criticism.
