God, grant me the serenity to tweet and engage in constructive, helpful and kind ways, the restraint to step away from trolls and unhelpful interactions, and the wisdom to know the difference

Even if there's nothing behind your decision to sit next to me on an otherwise empty bus, it immediately puts me on edge
I can't be alone in this, surely
Ps was in my gym gear, not wearing my collar, so he wasn't sitting next to me for a chat about something having seen my collar- which has happened before and which I am happy to do
@Hillywigs
I'm genuinely fine, dont worry x It's just so unnecessary and invasive. And the number of people sharing how they have felt uncomfortable on public transport shows how much we have to get this sorted
@haylesinnvrlnd
This makes me sad and I totally get it. My daughter avoided public transport whenever she could for a long time for similar reasons. I'm a big advocate for greener travel/public transport so this stuff really annoys me on a number of levels. Women should be able to feel safe
@RevRach
Was tricky to move but got off the bus a couple of stops early- the way the bus loops in the city centre means it didn't affect my onward journey too much

As there are, once again, changes afoot for churches, I have one plea...
Most church leaders, lay & ordained, have been trying their best and working very hard to do what they hope is right. This will continue in the weeks to come
Lets all try to

Friends, as many of you know, I'm leaving my current parish post to take up a new role
@ManCathedral
My licensing will be during the main service at the Cathedral on Sun 1st Oct at 10.30am
If you're able to come, I'd love to see you there. And prayers very much appreciated!

Today in Parliament we have laid an order to ban overseas care workers from bringing dependants.
This is just one part of our plan to deliver the biggest-ever cut in migration 👇
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers (Heb 13:2)
Do not oppress a foreigner (Ex 23:9)
For I was hungry & you gave me something to eat...I was a stranger and you invited me in (Mat 25:35)

Such a joy to have been the Vicar of Clifton. I leave having gained so much
My last act was to baptise a 10yr old who, when I asked whether he wanted to be baptised, jokingly pretended to think before enthusiastically saying YES!
What a way to end an incumbency ❤️
My priesting stole is ready and I'm totes emosh.
This wonderful woman, Mags, has created an item of beauty which I'll treasure forever. Made using my wedding dress & backed/embellished with recycled scraps. So indebted to her for the idea & talent

Not my normal clerical colour for a funeral, but today I am taking the service for a wonderful woman who was 99 years young, lived her life to the full and loved the colour pink 💗

Yesterday, after the service, I had two burials of ashes and a number of things to sort out. In the midst of this, my church warden found me, presented me with a cuppa, looked at me knowingly and said 'don't burnout, Grace'
And this is why church wardens rock.
Early start today talking about one of my favourite bits of my role on
@BBCBreakfast
- celebrating weddings! Great to be able to talk about how fabulous all weddings are and how churches are very special venues for such occasions!

My 18 year old daughter wrote this and sent it to me today
I yearn for the day when the streets feel safe for my daughters and sisters everywhere
On *that* tweet, which I've muted
Thanks for the support-sorry if you got piled on
Awful to hear the many stories of assault and intrusion on public transport
*Everyone* should feel safe and be free from unnecessary/unwelcome intrusion of personal space

Waiting on my bike at the red lights on a main street in Salford. A van pulls up beside me and the window slides down
My heart beats a little faster
Am I about to be sworn at/shouted at? A regular occurrence, sadly

It's been quite a day. Lots of emotion, lots of thanks to so many who have supported me on this journey.

15 yrs ago, I sat in
@durhamcathedral
praying. I felt called to priesthood but was overwhelmed at the thought of it
I opened the bible at the Exodus reading we had in MP today, where Moses asks 'who am I to do this'
God replied 'I will be with you'
Thanks be to God 🙏🏽
As I have often thought in times of grief, or when attending/conducting funerals, today I have once again been reminded of
The importance of ritual
The beauty of liturgy
The power of calm, slow speech
The potency of silence
The richness of hymnody and psalmody

Tonight,

is being licensed as incumbent in the parish of Clifton
@DioManchester
.
A number of church members are going to support her, and we all are holding Grace and her family, in our prayers.
You know that feeling you get when you finish a really, really good book?
That sense of deep satisfaction combined with a tinge of sorrow as you turn over the final page?
That's how I feel right now

Youngest (16y) is leading intercessions in her church this Sunday for the first time. The care and thoughtfulness with which she is approaching writing them is precious❤️
Whilst some may decline, inviting young people to participate and lead can be transformational for all
@AngelaTilby
Allegations of abuse of power and serious sexual assault are not trivial. Its very, very disappointing to see a CofE priest with a large platform suggest otherwise
Confession time. Currently self isolating whilst waiting for the results of my daughter's Covid test. Have attended a conference & filmed the sermon for tomorrow in a very fetching clergy top/pyjama bottom ensemble

(PS would appreciate any prayers for daughters situation)
Just watched
@BBCSoP
and
@revkatebottley
talking about her faith & ministry
'I don't know why terrible things happen, but I do believe that somehow, in the depths of our despair & pain, God is it in with us. And perhaps our role is to help others to see that'
Amen and thank you
I am the kind of vicar who deeply yearns to keep
#HolySaturday
as a time of silence & reflection
I'm also the kind of vicar who, today, donned bunny ears, energetically danced at the front of church to God Can Do Anything and ate many, many Jammy Dodgers
So, it's complicated 🙂
Dear world,
Would it be possible that, when my girls (both under 18) go out for exercise during
#lockdown
, they are not wolf-whistled or objectified in any way? They just want to ride their bikes in peace
Thank you,
Fed up mother
P.S this actually applies at ALL times
Maybe because she turns 16 tomorrow, I just remembered when we started a new church with youngest less than a month old
I sat at the back, breastfeeding her. During the peace the vicar* came to check I was OK and if I needed a drink of water ❤️
*she's now a Bishop btw

Supporting a parishioner on a prison visit today. It's the first time he has seen his son all year. If you are the praying sort, do keep prisoners in your prayers-the pandemic and restrictions have been extremely tough on them

When life throws me lemons, sometimes I have no capacity to make lemonade.
So, I let them rot on the compost heap, resting in the hope that, in time, something good and new may emerge from the dirt.
Friends, my amazing eldest has just passed his final exam, meaning he has the qualifications of a chartered accountant! I'm sooo proud and delighted 🎉🎉

Just listened to this great Desert Island Discs episode with
@nazirafzal
. Listening to him talking about the vital work he has done supporting women and girls, such as in 'honour' killings and grooming, was very moving
What a soundtrack as well!!
'Awful weather today for cycling, isn't it?'
I turn and he's smiling. With deep relief I smile back & agree
'You're not going far, are you?' He continues
'Just to the cathedral'
He sees my collar
'Oh, you're a vicar. Can you pray for me? Tricky meeting later'
'Sure' I reply
My youngest becomes a teenager today. My first child became a teenager in 2009, and, since then, I've had at least one teenager in the house, and will continue to do so, until 2027.
I am more than qualified to be a UN peace negotiator.
#JustSaying
Today, I'm preaching twice about grace. Which is difficult when you're called Grace. I always emphasise I'm not talking in the 3rd person -otherwise phrases like 'grace is dangerous' and 'grace will give you more than you could ever deserve' could be misinterpreted!

On a more sensible note, very aware of all the emergency services, health professionals and support staff who will be working through the night as we party.

We should show compassion to
people fleeing war, poverty, persecution, climate change etc
NOT because of what they've done for us

When you get on the bus to head towards your licensing
@ManCathedral
and you bump into one of the vergers there, too!
He's doing a good job of allaying my nerves!
Seriously?! The

apparently finds it 'bizarre' that the Real Easter Egg has a booklet about Jesus to 'celebrate the real meaning of Easter' - their quotation marks!! Its almost as if Easter isn't just about chocolate and bunnies.....
When eating out, I cannot emphasise these 2 points enough:
Pies of the savoury variety need to be served with gravy (a side jug is acceptable)
Pudding with custard needs to be served in a (deep) bowl, regardless of how trendy your square plates are

ANNOUNCEMENT: We're delighted to announce the appointment of the Revd Grace Thomas as incumbent of the parish of Clifton. Grace says 'I've been hugely blessed during my curacy. I'm full of gratitude for the love, support & encouragement I've received'
Full statement on Facebook
FYI, you can move the 'boxes' on Zoom. So, for example, in big meetings where you may be presenting and are a bit nervous, you can arrange to have people on the 1st screen whose presence will help reassure you
Just a lil trick that came to mind today for no particular reason ;)
I imagine there are quite a few new incumbents like me who are on the cusp of their 1st Lent/Holy Week/Easter, without significant covid restrictions, as a priest
A realisation that came to me whilst making ash and wondering why it all felt so new & huge
It's quite a thing
A rare Sunday at my lovely husband's church. Grateful for the opportunity to preach here today and share worship alongside him. Wishing you all a blessed Sunday 🙏🏽
@NatSecSoc
Like most key workers, despite the fact that my husband &I are priests, we won't send our child in to school. Some really have to & its important they can, but please don't assume we, as a group, are not heeding the advice given to keep our children at home unless necessary 2/2
My kids think I'm weird. This closed chapel is on a hill, up a single track path. With graves from the 1600s, I imagine it was once a significant presence.I love such places-there's a sense of peace in somewhere that's been place of faithful prayer. Tell me I'm not alone in this!
Lovely

25 yrs ago today my mum died. At the time, I was too much of a self centred teen to appreciate everything she did and was. If she were here now, there's so much I'd say to her, but mostly just 'thank you' and 'I love you'.
If you have someone like this in your life-tell them ❤️
Teen: Mum, you should treat yourself before your 'vicar thing'. You *never* get your nails done
Me: What a lovely idea!
Teen: I'll come with you, it'll be fun!
Me: <Happy mother face>
Teen: Oh, whilst we're there, I might as well get mine done...
Me: <Penny drops>

Sad day today as I join friends from theological college to say farewell to one of our sisters who trained with us & sadly died in the New Year. May she rest in peace and rise in glory and may her family, friends and all who knew her be sustained & comforted by God's eternal love
