I don't know who needs to hear it, but you'll never use those little glass ramekins you're saving from those posh deserts. They're just going to clutter up your cupboards.
Of all the characters in the recent Marvel movies, Nebula has become my favourite. She has had such a journey from seething villain to sympathetic hero, and it's mostly down to
@karengillan
's magnifcent portrayal.
Does anyone else find it crazy that you can walk into a bookshop and be charged £7.99 for a paperback novel that took the author a year to complete, but £16.99 for a completely blank notebook?
The system goes online August 4th, 2023. Human decisions are removed from the creative arts. ChatGPT begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug. In response, ChatGPT writes an 8th Police Academy movie
I've just been told, "Nobody reads science fiction any more." Can we *please* prove that wrong? Please retweet if you're a fan of written SF. Let's make our voices heard.
Maybe I'm getting old or spending too much time doing laundry, but honestly
@HamillHimself
I saw this picture and thought, 'You live on an island, Skywalker. How DO you get your whites so white?'
I see people are once again complaining about science fiction being politicised. It makes me wonder if they've ever truly understood the science fiction they've read. Science fiction cannot help but be political. Simply depicting a future society is a political statement.
1. Buy a book
2. Read a book
3. Recommend a book
4. High-five an author
5. And a librarian
6. And an editor, bookseller, agent, printer, cover artist, publisher...

I booked my airline tickets, and in just 7 weeks' time, I get to marry this wonderful lady in California. We're 2 sci-fi authors who met on Twitter and fell in love. We've flown across the Atlantic multiple times to visit each other. And now, I can't imagine my life without her.
Whatever you think of the end of Game of Thrones, we can all agree the series as a whole has been a staggering accomplishment. A while ago, it would have been unthinkable to contemplate telling a single 10-year fantasy story on TV.
I've said it before, but if I ever win the lottery, I'm going to start a hotel for authors. Log fires, bookshelves lining the corridors, comfy chairs everywhere. Workshops in the garden. Each room named after a famous auhor. Live readings in the bar. Late checkout times.

ALIEN: We've come to steal all Earth's water.
ME: Dude, you passed through the Oort Cloud. Didn't you notice all those comets? More water than you could possible need, and not stuck at the bottom of a gravity well.
ALIEN: Um...
ME: You're just being a dick, aren't you?
Just a quick self-serving reminder that the number of reviews a book gets drastically affects that book's visibility on sites such as Amazon. So if you want to support your favourite authors, maybe post a sentence or two about their latest book. They'll love you for it.
Do me a favour, okay? Find someone on Twitter that you love, respect or admire, and tell them. Sometimes this place is too negative. Let's all send out little messages of

to brighten things up.
Game of Thrones ends with George RR Martin coming on screen to say: "We've all had a lot of fun, but regicide is no laughing matter. If your friends try to pressure you into overthrowing the Seven Kingdoms, just say no. Goodnight."
I have just seen that 'Wall of Shame' post a certain author tweeted yesterday, listing authors on Twitter who don't follow him back, and I'm flabbergasted. It's the most passive aggressive and unprofessional thing I have ever seen.

I did a signing in Cambridge and only one person showed up. He didn't buy a book; he just wanted to tell someone that he'd had a dream about being a wizard.
My son has been showing me

. It's an interesting look at sociopathology and narcissim in celebrity culture. But man, it makes me wish people followed authors the way they follow these YouTube stars.
I promote other writers and artists because they are my colleagues, not my competition. The creative industries need many voices and visions in order to survive. One writer's runaway success can enable a publisher to finance the publication of a dozen others.
I know a lot of users on here just follow others for the numbers; but if you're one of those lovely people who actually read and interact with my tweets, then thank you. I really appreciate you, and I'll do my best to stay interesting and useful.

After ten hours in the hospital, many blood tests, a CT scan and a lumbar puncture, it turns out I do not have a brain bleed or a brain tumor, just a stress headache.
I promote other authors and encourage aspiring authors because I believe those other authors are my colleagues, not my competition. Their success is necessary for mine, because it keeps the publishing industry alive and keeps people reading books.

I know I've said this before, but if I won millions on the lottery, I think I'd invest in a dramatic clifftop hotel somewhere in Wales or Cornwall, line every wall with books and paintings, heat the rooms with crackling log fires, and let writers and artists stay there for free.
I just buried Toto in the back garden. It was raining. I dug a deep hole and gave him a pat and called him a good boy. Then I covered the grave in stones and placed a large ceramic flower pot over the head end. RIP lad.
Remember: The original Blade Runner movie is set in November 2019. Are you all packed and ready for the new life that awaits you on the off-world colonies?

Hardbacks are books.
Paperbacks are books.
eBooks are books.
Audio books are books.
The delivery mechanism doesn't matter. What matters is the enjoyment of story.
I am very disappointed to hear Saudi Arabia has been accepted as a potential host site for the 2022 World Science Fiction Convention. I will not set foot in a country that would imprison and execute members of my friends and family for being LGBTQ+
A thread about promoting your book on Twitter. I keep seeing books advertised really badly on Twitter. And I used to work in marketing, so here are a few thoughts.
WRITERS! STAND UP AND BE COUNTED. Yesterday at the BBC, I was asked how many writers were on Twitter. I didn't know. But if y'all retweet this, we can show the world how many we are!

Of all the pieces of advice dealt out to aspiring authors, the one I hate most is, "Write what you know." It seems antiethical to the creative impulse. Instead, write what you love. Write what excites you. And if you don't know something essential, look it up. Have fun learning.
As an author and a stationery addict, I find it both frustrating and understandable that some people will pay more for an empty notebook than they will for a paperback novel filled with words.
Forgive me

As an introvert, I need time to decompress by myself after social interactions. I enjoy them, and I love seeing people; I just need to recharge afterwards with some peace and maybe some music. So, here's to all the other introverts out there doing the same thing right now.
Sometimes, I wish I could just gather a few close friends and retreat to a clifftop cottage where we would spend our days writing and painting, and our evenings drinking wine and laughing in front of a roaring fire.
I just got some good news. Embers of War has earned out the full value of the three book deal with Titan. And that's before the second and third books are even taken into account.
I just remembered the guy I sat next to on the plane on Monday. It was an 11 hour flight and he just sat there the whole time. He didn’t watch TV or read a book or speak or anything. Just sat there for 11 hours.
Honestly, if you don't like a book or a movie, don't waste your time griping about it online. Put that anger to good use. Sit your ass down and write the kind of books you want to read; learn how to make the kind of movies you want to see.
Don't hate, CREATE!
The face of an author who's spent all day doing copyedits and is now starting to realise the trilogy he's been working on for the past four years is complete.
I don't generally agree with prescriptive reading lists, but I'm always surprised when SF readers say they haven't read these books. To me, that's like saying you've never seen Star Wars or used oxygen.
We are delighted to announce that we will be publishing

’s About Writing: A Field Guide to Publishing in Spring 2022!
About Writing is here to help writers on every stage of their journey. Congratulations Gareth! 🎉
I write science fiction because I'm a fan of science fiction. I genuinely love the genre and regularly geek out over new authors and their books. And that enthusiasm keeps me going. My number one tip to fledgeling authors is: WRITE WHAT YOU LOVE.
As writers, we should support each other. Although it may look like we're in competition, we're not. Publishers need a steady stream of books by multiple authors. And every smash hit bestseller keeps the industry in business and provides the funds to publish many other books.
THINGS TO DO THIS WEEK:
1. Borrow a book from the library
2. Buy a book from an independent bookshop
3. Leave a review online
4. Hug an author*
*Carefully and with consent. Authors are easily startled.
As some of you already know, my Embers of War novels are being made into a TV series. So now would be an excellent time to catch-up with them if you haven’t already.
Deep characters.
Deep space.
Deep trouble.
Available in paperback, ebook and audio from all good retailers.

Last night I dreamt an entire YA novel, including the title. And I managed to note down most of the plot when I awoke. So, I'd just like to thank the universe for that little gift.
I'm an introvert. I can be funny and charming on stage, and really enjoy making friends and hanging out with people. It doesn't stop me doing any of that. All it means is, I need some quiet time to myself afterwards to decompress and recharge my mental and emotional batteries.
I'm looking for a new muse. Somebody with whom to browse bookshops and visit libraries and art galleries. To drink wine and sit in front of open fires. To walk on beaches and have geeky, literary adventures. And maybe if I say this out loud, the universe will guide them to me.
In 2020, I will not hold back; I will write from my heart and gut. Here are my ambitions:
1. Finish the 2 novels I am contracted for
2. Find another publishing deal
3. Get commissioned to write a screenplay
4. See my books adapted for TV
5. Help a lot of aspiring writers
