The other day an consultant said
"Lets leave it to the children"
Referencing myself and the other reg
I replied
"I'm almost 38, with a mortgage and wife, i definity don't feel like a child, I'm sure my colleague doesn't either"
I was very pleased with myself!!
Literally 100s of women have shared their experiences
There are no doubt 100/ 1000s more who have not
If you wonder why women don't come forward about these issues- read this letter
@thetimes
#metoosurgery
Personally I don't think this letter should be redacted
I want it to live in perpetutory as a gleaming example of all the crap women have to put up with
Of all the attitudes and comments that women deal with
Every. Fucking. Day

Come here everyone, come look how diverse the future of surgery looks??
Past presidents in the background, no doubt a future president in this photo

37% felt bullied for wearing a hijab in theatre
37% felt bullied.
For wearing a hijab.
This is not acceptable
We need to make surgery a more accepting place and a SAFE PLACE for all peoples

#IWD2022
You can't deny the experience of 1400 people
89% of women and 81% of men witnessed sexual misconduct
63% of women and 23% of men experience sexual harassment
29% of women and 7% of men are sexually assaulted
Rape is happening
This is one reason why we need exit interviews.
To find out where the system isn't working and work how to improve it.
Otherwise we are simply ignoring those who tell us the system isnt working for everyone. And that's not good enough.
So that’s it. As of this week I’m no longer a neurosurgery trainee. I’ve given up my NTN after 6 years in neurosurgery.
My stomach still flips when I think about what I’ve done. I still can’t quite believe I’ve done it. I’m not sure if it’s brave or stupid? 1/n
Excited to have this piece out on the wild.
There is a debate to had about training, but we need to have it whilst accepting our own biases.
Whilst listening to each other.
Whilst not telling one generation of doctors they are worthless.
I'm going through ivf. As a same sex couple I have no other option.
I'm open about this.
But Its fucking hard. Its tiring. Its emotional. It's lonely
Then you tell people you're doing it
And they open up to their stories.
Suddenly not alone we need to talk more about this
With all the inevitable chat around
#metoosurgery
it does appear that some surgical institutions are taking this seriously and acting
Well done unnamed department, I hope others will follow suit
What a great meeting today- hosted by
@gmcuk
trying to find solutions to the issue of sexual misconduct, not just in surgery but in medicine.
This meeting was organised by the Working Party on Sexual Misconduct in Surgery based on the survey we conducted last year

Excellent poster on clitoris
Fun fact the clitoris wasn't fully described or mapped until 2005.
Of course cos it wasn't! Its not male anatomy
#TASconference
One of two papers published today that speaks to difference in outcome of female vs male surgeon
Having been told for years to take on more typically 'male charactersitics' perhaps its time we ask male trainees to take on more 'female characteristics?'
This is an everyone problem and needs both seismic systemic change as well as grassroots calling out of "banter" and culture change
Surgery should be a safe space for everyone to work- not just the chosen few

I want it to serve as a timestamp
So that when we have changed the culture, when women can work safety at work, without comment or harassment
We can look back and see just how far we have come

All other sessions look fairly representational---
Slightly awkward that the first panel of the day looks like this
Particularly when talking about

We need to think about every session and how it role models future surgeons

Small request-
When you organize teaching, online or in person, for medical students-
PLEASE TURN UP FOR IT
or if you need to cancel
LET SOMEONE KNOW
It is not okay to simply not turn up, or not apologize for being late
Whilst Tim is a great ally and will make a good president, this is just a reflection of a system controlled by a few who do not want the status quo to change.
We’re pleased to announce that

1⃣Lets just clarify what's going on here.
This lady has turned up for her examination. She appears to have brought her best underwear (two sets) and has a full face of make up on. Not really fussed about the latter but let's talk about the power dynamic in this photo....
70% of women felt their clinical ability had been doubted because of their gender.
It exhausting constantly being questioned for doing your job simply because youre a women

I’m not sure we need to treat people differently due to gender. I think we treat people differently as every person is different. There are stereotypes, some hold true, but for the most I’d like to think treating someone differently is about understanding them as a person

Wonderful blog about how its not just about getting women INTO surgery, but keeping them there.
Some attitudes and cultures need to change to be flexible to the diversity of trainees needs.
The one size fits all model doesn't work- it needs updating
Tin Mitchell apologises whole heartedly for his response in the
@thetimes
and
@guardian
, to the article on women surgical outcomes
It did not reflect his values of increasing diversity and his commitment to the cause of women in surgery
This is just not acceptable
WHY ARE THERE NO WOMEN??
At least 16 men on this
#manel
Not even a TOKEN women
Not one of these men thought to offer their place to a women
Come on seriously
Do better, be better

Insightful learning session with Una Lane
@gmcuk
Her top tips for
#leadership
1⃣ Find your voice
2⃣ People and relationships are the most important
3⃣ Learn leadership by watching and doing
4⃣ Diversity of thought should challenge and improve you
5⃣ Get a mentor
Seeing some very supportive men out there addressing mens violence against women.
Also seeing some not so supportive comments.
Here is some food for thought.

This, this is why we are striking
Real term pay cuts, a system that no longer respects our work, that keeps removing our autonomy and reducing our pay
Making it harder and harder for us to do our jobs for the patients that need us
