Trump: "I'll say this for the Taliban: they're great fighters. You know that, obviously they're great fighters. All you have to do is ask the Soviet Union."
Putin's political warfare has captured senior Republicans -- Senators Grassley and Johnson, Speaker of the House Johnson, Oversight Chair Comer -- and FOX amplifies their lies. This is a national security emergency, politics aside.
The GOP's star witness -- and the source for hundreds of FOX stories about the "Biden crime family" -- was an agent of Russian intelligence. Are we shocked? The Republican leadership serves as Putin's useful idiots.
I've been talking to former CIA directors and station chiefs a lot these days. I wasn't exactly on their Xmas card lists in the past. Any everyone of them has made a point of saying: We're all in the same boat now. Spies, journos, historians, military officers....all allies.
Seeing in print in the
@WSJ
this list of Republican national security officials endorsing Biden is really something. This is basically every GOP luminary of the last 30 years, saying “enough” to Trump. Stunning, really.
Here's Lindsey Graham telling CBS that Attorney General Barr has "created a process" where Rudy Giuliani can feed Biden dirt from Ukrainian sources directly to the DOJ, and the DOJ will then check it out
This is a function of Trump ordering the classification of vital public information as well as a dereliction of duty by Burr. We are on the brink of becoming a failing democracy.

Prosecutors seek to detain Smirnov saying:
The "misinformation he is spreading is not confined to 2020. He is actively peddling new lies that could impact US elections after meeting with Russian intelligence officials in November."
Fox wrote a falsified memoir about her largely imaginary exploits in the CIA. At least seven former officers I know say she's a fraud. Now she's running RFK Jr.'s wingnut campaign. (Though not for long, once the word gets out.) Such is the parlous state of American democracy.
"There are good books and bad books. Then there are books so bad that they should be tried, convicted and sentenced to life without parole in literary prison, never again to see the light of day. Gentle reader, this is such a book."
David Ignatius, not given to uninformed speculation, writes that Trump might make Kash Patel FBI director and Ezra Cohen-Watnick the NSA chief to disrupt the transition. That is...alarming. Don't know those two? Read what I wrote about them:
Trump is likely the target in an espionage case. Kash Patel, his National Archives liaison, may be too. He was Trump's mole in the intelligence community for a year. Do the purloined files include docs Patel obtained on Trump's orders? If so, that's slammer time.
"Whitaker writes in the way Trump tweets, mixing a toxic cocktail of macho MAGA swagger, the angry cant of the Christian right and the whining of a petulant child."

Ten US generals and one admiral died during seven years of combat operations in Vietnam, One of them by ground fire. Helicopter crashes, mostly.
🤔Ratcliffe just declassified to Graham a claim that Russian intel alleged that Clinton “approved a campaign plan to stir up a scandal against [Trump] by tying him to Putin and the Russians' hacking of the DNC.”
...but says “the IC does not know the accuracy of this allegation.”

is a foolish idea, and I write that as the author of Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA. The Bernard Bros need to stop and think before they tweet,
Best spy indictment of the month. A fugitive Israeli-American -- the GOP's "missing witness" against Hunter Biden -- charged with working for China and Iran, alongside unnamed former high-ranking US Government official and adviser to President-elect Trump.
As a rookie reporter I covered the Hyatt Hotel disaster in 1981; 114 people died. Hallmark built and owned the hotel. It decided not to send flowers to the funerals as that would be an admission of liability. Hallmark: when you care enough to send the very best.
@JRubinBlogger
I've done 6 reporting tours over the years. The wrong turn was at Tora Bora, end of 2001, when focus turned away from Bin Laden to Iraq. The Taliban always figured one day we'd get tired and leave, like the Soviets and the Brits. Anyhow Afghanistan was never ours to win or lose.

and elaborate. The destruction of the CIA is a fantasy and the reality is a different story altogther.
I reported from Afghanistan regularly from 1987 to 2002.
@john_sipher
is 100 percent right. It's a myth, and an ugly one, that CIA supported bin Laden. They armed the Afghan muj, with lots of unforeseen consequences. The rise of al Qaeda wasn't one of them.
RFK Jr. out here saying US makes "ethnically targeted bioweapons." Wonder where he got that that idea? The KGB's department of disinformation said the exact same thing during a global political-warfare campaign in the 1980s.

Another enabler with regrets. The military men -- McMaster, Mattis, Kelly -- who signed up for a ticket on the Trump train now want off at the end of the ride. None of them had the courage to throw down their stars and resign as a matter of principle. That stain will not out.

Never chalk up to conspiracy what you can attribute to stupidity. Conspiracy is hard. Stupidity ain't. It is the most powerful force in the course of human events.
This "credible witness" is now under indictment, a fugitive from justice, on federal charges of spying for China and Iran. An unindicted and unnamed co-conspirator: a senior Trump adviser in 2016 (possibly the former CIA director Jim Woolsey).
Gal Luft, a very credible witness on Biden family corruption, provided incriminating evidence to six officials from the FBI and the DOJ in a meeting in Brussels in March 2019.
We have no reason to believe the FBI & DOJ acted on this info.
Americans deserve answers.

The only parallel for the disgraceful conduct of Trump, Barr, and Durham was 50 years ago: Nixon, AG John Mitchell, acting FBI director L. Patrick Gray. Nixon fled, Mitchell went to prison, Gray resigned in disgrace. The rule of law was stronger then.
Excellent story on the first intel on Bin Laden in 1993. The analyst, Gina Bennett, was a young star at the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research. INR's been punching above its weight for 70 years, excelling CIA and the rest of the gang.

Keep in mind that the senator's husband, Jeffrey Sprecher, is the chairman of the New York Stock Exchange. His trade too. He may wind up like Richard Whitney, president of the NYSE from 1930 to 1935, federal prisoner from 1938 to 1941.
This indictment depicts a United States Senator corrupting American foreign policy for profit in cahoots with grubby felons, Egyptian generals and spies, and his trophy wife. Epic sleaze from a Senator who’s crooked as the day is long.

The Trump adviser cited in the indictment was targeted for a paid recruitment. Trump as president-elect had only a few foreign policy advisers. One was Mike Flynn.
I remember the assassinations, Vietnam, America at war with itself in 1968, the Nixon years, Reagan's wars, the first Iraq war, 9/11, the second Iraq war, the great recession. I have never feared more for my country, a failing democracy led by an unstable autocrat.
