@TheHyyyype
To even suggest there was such a thing as “arthouse” films in 1960s Latvia reveals an almost impressive level of ignorance. So, congrats! You succeeded in being both a dick and a fucking moron.
@aliarikan
Because I’m 79 years old, I have to ask…how much time/effort does it take to make something like this? Does one simply say “Hey computer, make me a LOTR trailer in the style of WA” or does it require a great deal of 3D Modeling, getting the celebs faces in there etc?
No disrespect towards nearly my entire feed who are hailing that new Tom Cruise movie as the rebirth of cinema, but for those of us who were of age in Reagan's era of shiny-white young republicans, TG means something quite different.
@Glenn__Kenny
nails it
When I first moved to Berlin, I used to see him quite often in the neighborhood. An intense figure to say the least. Sad to read of his passing. If you haven't seen his performance in GEGEN DIE WAND (HEAD-ON), you really ought to. RIP Birol Ünel.
From the Christoph Waltz interview in GQ:
GQ: Nostalgia - What was the last film you saw in the theatre?
CW: Tenet.
GQ: That must have been here in Berlin during the distancing regulations. How was that experience?
CW: I have no idea what the film was about.
This is unhinged. There’s no other word for it. The German Health Minister QTs a rabbi (!!!) who argues was that the Nazis still had a spark of humanity and that they were fundamentally opposed to the “actions” they were taking as opposed to Hamas.
@Karl_Lauterbach
should resign.
Here's a first for me: Today in a very small village in Germany I was accused of being a horse thief, and spent the better part of an hour convincing the villagers that I was not.
Shared this tweet with my imaginary 10 year-old daughter. After wiping away her tears, she begged me to start a gofundme campaign to get this poor filmmaker an editor so his films will be more palatable to hacks.
Willy Wonka was a TERRIBLE PERSON.
He was a TYRANT. He betrayed every ideal he ever claimed to stand for. He was a shameless pathological liar who killed children and enslaved people for his own insatiable vanity. He is literally one of the worst people in confectionery.
Wandering through the swankiest part of Berlin this evening, I stumbled upon F.W. Murnau's house. Wandering into the back yard, I met the current residents, who regaled me with tales of Murnau's "homosexual orgies" which Riefenstahl knew about. Hmmmm...
That someone took the time to make this is sad enough, but I'd love to have seen him struggling to find these descriptors. "... experimental cinema" 🤣🤣🤣
R.I.P. Jacques Perrin. Amazing career that spanned over 60 years. Was great in the original adaptation of L'ÉCUME DES JOURS (far better than the remake), as well as Z, PEAU D'ÂNE, LES DEMOISELLES DE ROCHEFORT...
You know, with all the shit going on right now, especially here in Germany, it majorly warmed my heart to see almost all of Twitter bonding over THE BEATLES: GET BACK this weekend. Like a 72 hour reprieve from the madness. Thank you, all.
TIL that my son is a co-owner of the world's first queer, anarchist Yiddish vegan cafe (based in Glasgow), which recently got into trouble for selling "F*ck the Police" tote bags. He was even interviewed on BBC radio about it!

THREAD: Here's an example of what racism looks like here in Germany. This incident took place a few days ago. (Special guest star: The police.) Vannesa H, an Afro-German woman born & raised in Berlin, was shopping at a Rossmann (Germany's 2nd largest drugstore chain) in Berlin.
Curious as to how the media will cover it, but what I’ve been witnessing at today’s peaceful pro-Palestine demonstration has been endless provocation by the police (especially if your skin isn’t white). It’s going to get uglier real soon.

For the record, here's what I wrote to
@mangiotto
that resulted in him blocking me in 2 seconds. Really sick of people saying ignorant and provocative shit and then playing victim when there's fallout.
BARDO's unchecked self-indulgences and narcissism aside, its greatest (and most ridiculous) offence is Iñárritu's belief that a documentary filmmaker could actually own such a luxury house, let alone two!
Not only does
@aliarikan
have some lovely words to say about The Beatles and GET BACK, he manages to bring Curtis "Booger" Armstrong into the fold. Reason

why we love Ali so much.
Happened to walk by this movie theatre (whose existence I was unaware of) and in a few minutes they’re playing LOVE IN THE CITY, the 1953 Italian omnibus film (Fellini, Antonioni, Lattuada et al.) which I’ve never seen. Hooray for happenstance!

Friday night showing of KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON. Large cinema, sold out, not even a hint of rustling, talking nor a single person getting up. Film was mesmerising.
Found a cocktail bar on an otherwise dead and lonely street in Asakusa. Patrons (and we were the only ones) get to choose the music (from an insanely extensive vinyl collection) and which Laser Disc to project.
@mangiotto
Here's the thing - she didn't just proclaim "I don't like old movies." She made sweeping, insulting and quite frankly embarrassing & reductive comments about the films themselves ("racist and sexist af") & the people who defend them as pretentious elites with film school degrees.
Well, it's happened...starting tonight we Berliners are not allowed out from 10pm to 5am. So....along with a special someone (whose birthday it is) we're going to eat Korean BBQ, drink all of 7 of these and star in our own Hong Sang-soo film. (What can possibly go wrong?)
@faceyouhate
Yeah, fuck all those "classic" straight cis Western white men I had to read in high school like Emily Brontë, Jane Austen, Kate Chopin, Harper Lee, Virginia Wolf, George Eliot, Edith Wharton, Emily Dickenson. All suck.
I learned 2 things today:
1) The German title for JESUS' SON is JESUS' SON: THE FUNNY LIFE OF FUCKHEAD.
2) There is no Blu-Ray of JESUS' SON, under any title, as far as I know, and this is criminal.
In the early 80s, there was a short-lived mag called Vidiots, aimed at video game and arcade enthusiasts. I *vividly* remember this article, which, even at 16, seemed ludicrous. (I regularly broke fashion rule

Back in the days when you could basically count the number of film blogs on two hands (hi

@adriancurry
made several banners for the site over the years, including the one below:
Hong Sang-soo is a one-man-band these days, but A TRAVELER’S NEEDS is his richest film in quite some time. Isabelle Huppert remains the coolest motherfucker to grace the screen.
Highest recommendation to check out Abel Ferrara's audio commentary on DRILLER KILLER. The number of times his reaction to a shot is "What the fuck is this!?!": 742
Well, all those years of intense hard work paid off. Judith has been shooting this film for ten years, and I’m proud to have taken that journey with her for the last five. Winning the audience award at the

Thanks for this, Farran. Guess this means the stories a few months back about him living in more or less poverty conditions in Paris weren't true?
Spent most of the day in bed reading Charlie Chaplin's autobiography, which then led me to read about silent movie star Marie Doro, and how nearly every film she appeared in is lost. Schade. (Seen anything with her,

“Sensitivity reader” is just a less threatening expression for “censor”.
One question I haven’t seen asked: was there pressure to censor Dahl’s books? Why did Netflix feel the need to hire these people?
In any year, a film like LUCKY would be a blessing. But in the midst of this dark, ugly time we find ourselves in, it serves as a powerful antidote. Just beautiful. Film of the year. Thanks,

Wow,
#Joker
is just god-awful. But even worse than the film itself is people like Billington actually believing the film is dangerous, deep, relevant, and/or has anything whatsoever to say. A masterwork of vapidity.
Saddened to hear about Robert Downey Sr.'s passing. Indulge me a bit while I share 2 interesting stories about him. I met him through
@cobblehillis
back in '09 when we approached him about releasing several of his films on DVD.
The first film I saw at this year's Berlinale features a shirtless

Even more pointless and ludicrous than creating AI portraits of what dead rock stars would look like today is the mere suggestion that Jim Morrison would ever step foot in an Olive Garden.
I fixed the ending of UP WITH SKYWALKERS, or whatever it's called. Spoilers, I guess, though can one spoil what is already rotten? (Inspired by my heartbreak over

loving it.)

At a NYFF screening of one his films (can't recall which -- it was right around the time Matti Pellonpää died), someone asked, "Did Matti Pellonpää's death affect you at all?" His response: "He was only my best friend. So, no, not at all."
It was a wonderful sense of solidarity, and peaceful. But now the police have had enough. They confiscated the truck with the PA system, and are now making arrests.
One of the biggest marches for Gaza in
#Berlin
since the beginning of the genocide. Never been in massively diverse events as in Palestinian protests. All colors, religions, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities are here.
This is why they fear us.
They can’t defeat us.
